Abstract

Multilevel dissipative systems can exploit multiple local transitions and coherence channels to generate nonstationary time-crystalline dynamics. Here we show that an analogous mechanism can be synthesized without enlarging the local Hilbert space by coupling two locally pumped and decaying spin-1/2 ensembles into a composite dissipative unit.Neither ensemble supports an autonomous oscillatory phase; instead, opposite pump-decay imbalances and inter-ensemble exchange coupling can lead to a single interlocked time crystal with a fixed internal phase relation and no single-ensemble counterpart. The time-crystalline character is consistently established through the mean-field analysis, exact calulation of Liouvillian spectra at finite size, and temporal correlations with cumulant expansion. Our work establishes a route to dissipative time-crystalline order in which coupling between simple two-level subsystems generates the effective internal structure otherwise provided by multilevel constituents.

Local Dephasing Sustains Continuous Time Crystals in a Spin-1/2 Ensemble

Zhen-huan Yang, Dan-Bo Zhang

Local pure dephasing suppresses single-spin coherence, yet we show that it sustains continuous time-crystalline order in a fully connected ferromagnetic spin-$1/2$ ensemble with local decay. An exact operator identity reveals the mechanism: dephasing raises the interaction energy, while energy relaxation on a finite timescale converts this charging into delayed feedback. Within homogeneous mean-field theory, we prove that dephasing is necessary for periodic motion in this model and that feedback exactly balances transverse damping over each cycle. Beyond mean field, the identity fixes the relative amplitude and phase of energy and longitudinal magnetization in oscillatory Liouvillian modes. Liouvillian spectra and stationary two-time correlations characterize temporal order through decay rates that decrease algebraically with system size, frequencies approaching nonzero mean-field values, and comparable per-spin oscillatory weights. Semiclassical trajectories further reveal recurrent switching between a limit-cycle region and two symmetry-related stationary regions: fluctuations interrupt and reactivate collective oscillations, and oscillatory episodes provide an intermediate channel between stationary regions. These results establish local dephasing as a resource for autonomous collective motion and show how the resulting temporal order can participate in metastable dynamics.

Dissipative Time Quasicrystals from Multilevel Interference

Kang Shen, Xiangming Hu, Fei Wang

Boundary time crystals exhibit spontaneous breaking of continuous time-translation symmetry through persistent periodic oscillations in driven-dissipative many-body systems. Here, we show that multilevel interference provides a natural route beyond periodic order, enabling dissipative time quasicrystals without externally imposed quasiperiodic driving. We consider a collectively driven-dissipative four-level ensemble with two degenerate excited states and two degenerate ground states. In the thermodynamic limit, the exact mean-field dynamics reduces to an irrational flow on a two-dimensional torus, yielding quasiperiodic order parameters with discrete spectra generated by two incommensurate fundamental frequencies. Vanishing maximal Lyapunov exponents demonstrate that the nonlinear self-consistent dynamics remains nonchaotic. Our results establish a minimal interference-induced mechanism for time-quasiperiodic order and open a route toward higher-dimensional quasiperiodic dynamics in multilevel systems.

Emergent continuous time crystal in dissipative quantum spin system without driving

Shu Yang, Zeqing Wang, Libin Fu +1 more

Time crystals are a nonequilibrium phase of matter that extend fundamental spontaneous symmetry breaking into the temporal dimension, typically requiring external driving for their realization. Here, we explore the nonequilibrium phase diagram of a two-dimensional dissipative Heisenberg spin system without external coherent or incoherent driving. Through numerical analysis of spin dynamics, we identify nonstationary steady states, some of which are limit cycles with persistent periodic oscillations, while others exhibit chaotic, aperiodic behavior. The emergence of limit cycle steady states breaks the continuous time-translation symmetry of this time-independent many-body system, classifying them as continuous time crystals. We further validate these oscillatory behaviors by testing their stability against local perturbations and assess the robustness of the emergent continuous time crystals by introducing isotropic Gaussian white noise. This work provides insights into the intricate interplay between the dissipation and spin interaction, and opens possibilities for realizing dissipation-induced, heating-immune time crystals. Time crystals represent a nonequilibrium phase of matter without an equilibrium counterpart. The authors investigate the nonequilibrium steadystate phase diagram of a two-dimensional dissipative Heisenberg model in the absence of driving, and identify a continuous time crystalline phase exhibiting persistent oscillations in time.

Sufficient Condition for Gapless Spin-Boson Lindbladians, and Its Connection to Dissipative Time Crystals

Leonardo da Silva Souza, Luis Fernando dos Prazeres, Fernando Iemini

We discuss a sufficient condition for gapless excitations in the Lindbladian master equation for collective spin-boson systems and permutationally invariant systems. The condition relates a nonzero macroscopic cumulant correlation in the steady state to the presence of gapless modes in the Lindbladian. In phases arising from competing coherent and dissipative Lindbladian terms, we argue that such gapless modes, concomitant with angular momentum conservation, can lead to persistent dynamics in the spin observables with the possible formation of dissipative time crystals. We study different models within this perspective, from Lindbladians with Hermitian jump operators, to non-Hermitian ones composed by collective spins and Floquet spin-boson systems. We also provide a simple analytical proof for the exactness of the mean-field semiclassical approach in such systems based on a cumulant expansion.

Shattered time: can a dissipative time crystal survive many-body correlations?

K Tucker, B Zhu, R J Lewis-Swan +4 more

We investigate the emergence of a time crystal (TC) in a driven dissipative many-body spin array. In this system the interplay between incoherent spin pumping and collective emission stabilizes a synchronized non-equilibrium steady state which in the thermodynamic limit features a self-generated time-periodic pattern imposed by collective elastic interactions. In contrast to prior realizations where the time symmetry is already broken by an external drive, here it is only spontaneously broken by the elastic exchange interactions and manifest in the two-time correlation spectrum. Employing a combination of exact numerical calculations and a second-order cumulant expansion, we investigate the impact of many-body correlations on the TC formation and establish a connection between the regime where it is stable and where the system features a slow growth rate of the mutual information. This observation allows us to conclude that the TC studied here is an emergent semi-classical out-of-equilibrium state of matter. We also confirm the rigidity of the TC to single-particle dephasing. Finally, we discuss an experimental implementation using long lived dipoles in an optical cavity.
