Abstract

Quantum circuits under sufficiently weak monitoring purify on a timescale $T_P$ exponentially long in the system size. This slowness underlies a universal purification dynamics, whose quantitative description has so far required the replica trick, with a delicate analytic continuation. We show that monitored Clifford circuits on $L$ qudits of prime dimension $q$ bypass this construction entirely: in the scaling limit at fixed $x = t/T_P(L)$, purification reduces to the Markovian decay of the density-matrix rank, an exactly solvable death process descending from infinity. We compute the full scaling functions in compact form: all Rényi entropies collapse onto a universal curve $\langle S(x) \rangle$. Exact stabilizer simulations at $q=2,3,5$ confirm the predictions, with no fitting parameter for the global model and $T_P$ as the only fitted scale for local brick-wall circuits. Also, the replica problem amounts to a tilted version of the same Markov process, in agreement with exact computations from the Clifford commutant. Finally, the quantization of the rank leaves two hallmarks that distinguish Clifford dynamics from generic monitored circuits: the entropy fluctuations saturate at short scaled times $x\to0$ to an $O(1)$ variance, instead of vanishing, and observables develop a temporal modulation periodic in $\log_q x$, which cannot be captured by the replica approach.

Universal purification dynamics in real non-unitary quantum processes

Federico Gerbino, Donghoon Kim, Guido Giachetti +2 more

We study purification dynamics in monitored quantum processes governed by ensembles of quantum circuits in different random-matrix symmetry classes. We analyze the universal aspects that emerge away from the measurement induced phase transition and inside the volume/weak measurement phase and in the scaling limit of large time and Hilbert space dimension. We present two toy models that reveal two complementary visions and provide quantitative access to universal scaling: i) a discrete-time dynamic in which each time step corresponds to multiplication by a Gaussian random matrix; ii) weak continuous-time monitoring that induces a Dyson brownian motion of the eigenvalues of the density matrix. The first approach provides an algebraic characterization based on rotational invariance emerging in Kraus's operator space, focusing in particular on the unitary and orthogonal cases, respectively $β=2$ and $β=1$, with $β$ the Dyson random-matrix index. The second approach, on the other hand, allows for a unified treatment for any $β$, thanks to the mapping of the Fokker-Planck evolution of eigenvalues onto the Calogero-Sutherland integrable Hamiltonian diagonalized in terms of Jack polynomials. We provide explicit expressions for the universal decrease of Rényi entropies. We show that, approaching the universal scaling limit, numerical simulations of different models agree with each other and with our theoretical predictions. Our results clarify the existence of different classes of universality for the purification process in hybrid quantum systems, accessible in random circuit architectures and weak measurement protocols.

Invariant Measures and Weak-Magic-Injection Asymptotics in Random Monitored Quantum Circuits

Guocheng Zhen, Xuanrong Yang, Chengkai Zhu +2 more

Monitored quantum circuits combine scrambling with measurement-conditioned state updates, while non-Clifford perturbations inject magic into otherwise stabilizer-compatible dynamics. Rigorous results on stationary magic and its weak-injection asymptotics remain limited even for finite-dimensional Clifford-based monitored models. We study an \(N\)-qudit process of prime local dimension \(d\). Each cycle draws a fresh uniform global Clifford unitary, applies a local weak non-Clifford rotation and a projective measurement on one qudit, and then returns to the inverse Clifford frame. For every fixed injection strength, we prove that the induced pure-state Markov chain has a unique invariant probability measure and attracts every initial law geometrically in Wasserstein distance. At zero injection, the invariant law is supported on the finite stabilizer layer. After rescaling transverse deviations from this layer, the resulting blown-up stationary laws converge weakly to the invariant law of an affine tangent recursion. Combining this tangent law with Poisson representations and the first nonzero local resource germs determines the sharp vanishing rates of stationary magic. For every fixed \(N\ge2\), odd-prime Gross--Wigner mana admits a linear expansion with a strictly positive coefficient, whereas qubit \(2\)-stabilizer Rényi entropy admits a quadratic expansion with a strictly positive coefficient. For \(N=1\), both stationary resource averages vanish identically for all injection strengths. The distinct orders arise from the different local resource geometries, together with quadratic-order zero-reference branch contributions in qubit case.

Statistical mechanics model for Clifford random tensor networks and monitored quantum circuits

Yaodong Li, Romain Vasseur, Matthew P. A. Fisher +1 more

The authors explore critical properties of entanglement phase transitions in random tensor networks and monitored quantum circuits with Clifford tensors/gates for on-site Hilbert space dimensions which are powers of a prime number $p$. Exact mappings to replica spin models and characterizations of their symmetry groups predict that all universal properties will depend only on $p$. These predictions are confirmed with extensive numerical simulations. The authors also establish multifractal scaling of the purity, reflected in a continuous spectrum of critical exponents, while the typical exponent is the prefactor of the logarithm in the entanglement entropy.

Universality Classes for Purification in Nonunitary Quantum Processes

Andrea De Luca, Chunxiao Liu, Adam Nahum +1 more

We consider the universal aspects of two problems: (i) the singular value structure of a product M t = m t m t − 1 … m 1 of many large independent random matrices and (ii) the slow purification of a large number of qubits by repeated quantum measurements. The time-evolution operator in the latter case is again a product of matrices m i , representing time steps in the evolution, but the m i are now nontrivially correlated as a result of Born’s rule. Both processes are associated with the decay of natural measures of entropy as a function of time or of the number of matrices in the product. We argue that, for a broad class of models, each process is described by universal scaling forms for purification and that (i) and (ii) represent distinct “universality classes” with distinct scaling functions. Using the replica trick, these universality classes correspond to effective one-dimensional statistical mechanics models for a gas of “kinks,” representing domain walls between elements of the permutation group. This is an instructive low-dimensional limit of the effective statistical mechanics models for random circuits and tensor networks. These results apply to longtime purification in spatially local monitored circuit models on the entangled side of the measurement phase transition.

Measurement-Induced Phase Transitions and Logical-Space Localization in Floquet Monitored Clifford Circuits

Hyunsoo Ha, David A. Huse

An entanglement transition can occur without a corresponding transition in purification. We demonstrate this separation in spatially local monitored Clifford circuits with a fixed number of layers per Floquet period, where a spatially random pattern of Clifford gates and Pauli measurements is repeated exactly in time. Rare spatial structures persist under this repetition and break the correspondence between entanglement and purification found in conventional spacetime-random circuits. In one spatial dimension, the late-time entanglement produced with an initial product state remains area-law, while the system remains extensively mixed in the thermodynamic and long-time limits if the initial state is maximally mixed. In two or more dimensions, we find a transition between volume-law and area-law entanglement while the system remains mixed on both sides of this transition. An extensive amount of quantum information survives indefinitely in both phases and evolves unitarily despite the repeated measurements. We introduce the logical-support radius to characterize its spatial spreading and identify the volume-law and area-law phases with delocalized and localized logical dynamics, respectively. We further introduce the logical Krylov dimension, which counts the independent logical operators dynamically generated from an initially local operator. Its scaling resolves the transition and provides evidence for a new universality class of measurement-induced phase transitions.
