Abstract

We investigate how cavity-mediated attractive electron-electron interactions modify the excitation gaps of fractional quantum Hall states within the composite-fermion framework. We compute both the neutral magnetoroton excitation spectrum and the charged excitation gap relevant to transport experiments for the Laughlin $ν=1/3$ and $ν=1/5$ states. We consider a spin-polarized lowest-Landau-level model in which the interaction is mediated by a cavity mode with a spatially uniform vacuum-field gradient and a finite interaction range controlled by a long-distance cutoff. Finite-size scaling reveals that the transport gap is consistently enhanced by the cavity-induced interaction, with the gap enhancement scaling quadratically with the electron number and with the fourth power of the vacuum-field gradient. By contrast, the magnetoroton spectrum exhibits a richer dependence on the interaction range. The high-$k$ magnetoroton gap is enhanced for all interaction ranges considered, consistent with its close connection to the charged excitation gap, even with the long-range character of the interaction.

Neutral excitations of quantum Hall states: A density matrix renormalization group study

Prashant Kumar, F. D. M. Haldane

We use the dynamical structure factors of the quantum Hall states at $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/3$ and $1/2$ in the lowest Landau level to study their excitation spectrum. Using the density matrix renormalization group in combination with the time-dependent variational principle on an infinite cylinder geometry, we extract the low-energy properties. At $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/3$, a sharp magnetoroton mode and the two-roton continuum are present and the finite-size effects can be understood using the fractional charge of the quasiparticle. At $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/2$, we find low-energy modes with linear dispersion and the static structure factor $\overline{s}(q)\ensuremath{\sim}{(q\ensuremath{\ell})}^{3}$ in the limit $q\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$. The properties of these modes agree quantitatively with the predictions of the composite-fermion theory placed on the infinite cylinder.

Incompressible states of the interacting composite fermions in negative effective magnetic fields at ν=4/13,5/17 , and 3/10

Sutirtha Mukherjee, Sudhansu S. Mandal

By developing an algorithm for evaluating the basis states for the composite fermions with negative effective magnetic field, we perform the composite-fermion-diagonalization study for the fully spin-polarized fractional quantum Hall states at the filling factors $\ensuremath{\nu}=3/10$, 4/13, and 5/17 in the range $2/7<\ensuremath{\nu}<1/3$. These observed states correspond to a partially filled second effective Landau level, for the composite fermions carrying four vortices, with filling factor $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}=1/2$, 1/3, and 2/3, respectively, analogous to the previously studied states of composite fermions with two attached vortices in the range $1/3<\ensuremath{\nu}<2/5$. We show that the character of these states in the range $2/7<\ensuremath{\nu}<1/3$ replicates the same for the states in the range $1/3<\ensuremath{\nu}<2/5$ having identical $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$: chiral $p$-wave pairing with an anti-Pfaffian correlation of composite fermions carrying six quantized vortices produces an incompressible state at $\ensuremath{\nu}=3/10$; an unconventional interaction between composite fermions, resulting from the suppression of fermion pairs with relative angular momentum three and producing the fractional quantum Hall effect of composite fermions in the second effective Landau level with $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}=1/3$ and its particle-hole conjugate filling factor 2/3, reproduces incompressible states at $4/13$ and $5/17$ filling factors. We further estimate the thermodynamic limit of the ground-state energies and calculate the lowest energy gap for the neutral collective excitations of these states.

Fractional quantum Hall effect in the second Landau level: The importance of inter-composite-fermion interaction

Csaba Tőke, Michael R. Peterson, Gun Sang Jeon +1 more

Exact diagonalization of a two-dimensional electron gas in a strong magnetic field in the disk geometry shows that there exists a filling-factor range in the second Landau level where the states significantly differ from those in the lowest Landau level. We show that the difference arises because the interaction between composite fermions is not negligible in higher Landau levels, as indicated by a substantial mixing between composite-fermion Landau-like levels, or $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ levels. We find that the exact ground state is well reproduced by composite-fermion theory with $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-level mixing incorporated at the lowest level of approximation. Using the same variational approach in the spherical geometry we estimate the excitation gap at filling $1∕3$ in the second Landau level (which corresponds to $7∕3$ of experiment).

Composite Fermions in the Hilbert Space of the Lowest Electronic Landau Level

Jainendra K. Jain, Rajiv K. Kamilla

Single particle basis functions for composite fermions are obtained from which many-composite fermion states confined to the lowest electronic Landau level can be constructed in the standard manner, i.e. by building Slater determinants. This representation enables a Monte Carlo study of systems containing a large number of composite fermions, yielding new quantitative and qualitative information. The ground state energy and the gaps to charged and neutral excitations are computed for a number of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) states, earlier off-limits to a quantitative investigation. The ground state energies are estimated to be accurate to ~0.1% and the gaps at the level of a few percent. It is also shown that at Landau level fillings smaller than or equal to 1/9 the FQHE is unstable to a spontaneous creation of excitons of composite fermions. In addition, this approach provides new conceptual insight into the structure of the composite fermion wave functions, resolving in the affirmative the question of whether it is possible to motivate the composite fermion theory entirely within the lowest Landau level, without appealing to higher Landau levels.

Dispersion of neutral collective modes in partonic fractional quantum Hall states and its applications to paired states of composite fermions

Koyena Bose, Ajit Coimbatore Balram

The Moore-Read Pfaffian (Pf) state exhibits two distinct neutral excitation modes, the bosonic magnetoroton mode, and the neutral fermion mode. These two modes have been conjectured to be supersymmetric (SUSY) partners in the long-wavelength limit. Previous studies on these neutral excitations of the Pf state have shown evidence in favor of SUSY in the vicinity of the second Landau level (SLL) Coulomb interaction. Inspired by that, using the framework of parton theory, we test the SUSY conjecture for a state that lies in the same universality class as the particle-hole conjugate of the Pf, namely the anti-Pf (aPf) state, by constructing explicit wave functions for its magnetoroton and neutral fermion excitations and evaluating them for very large system sizes. As with the previous studies on the Pf state, we find that the long-wavelength gaps of the neutral modes of the parton state belonging to the same topological class as the aPf are close to each other for the SLL Coulomb interaction. Furthermore, using the parton wave functions, we compute the dispersion of various neutral collective excitations, including the magnetoroton, neutral fermion, and parton-excitons, for several notable non-Abelian and Abelian states. Finally, we propose a parton-exciton ansatz for the gapped neutral excitation of the composite fermion Fermi liquid at quarter filling and compute its dispersion for the Coulomb interaction in the lowest Landau level.

Excitation gaps in fractional quantum Hall states: An exact diagonalization study

R. Morf, N. d’Ambrumenil, S. Das Sarma

We compute energy gaps for spin-polarized fractional quantum Hall states in the lowest Landau level (LL) at filling fractions $\ensuremath{\nu}=\frac{1}{3},$ $\frac{2}{5},$ $\frac{3}{7},$ and $\frac{4}{9}$ using exact diagonalization of systems with up to 16 particles and extrapolation to the infinite system-size limit. The gaps calculated for a pure Coulomb interaction and ignoring finite width effects, disorder and LL mixing agree well with the predictions of composite fermion theory provided the logarithmic corrections to the effective mass are included. This is in contrast with previous estimates, which, as we show, overestimated the gaps at $\ensuremath{\nu}=2/5$ and 3/7 by around 15%. We also study the reduction of the gaps as a result of the nonzero width of the two-dimensional (2D) layer. We show that these effects are accurately accounted for using either Gaussian or ``$z\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}$ Gaussian'' $(z\mathrm{G})$ trial wave functions, which we show are significantly better variational wave functions than the Fang-Howard wave function. The Gaussian and $z\mathrm{G}$ wave functions give Haldane pseudopotential parameters which agree with those of self-consistent local density approximation calculations to better than $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2%.$ For quantum well parameters typical of heterostructure samples, we find gap reductions of around 20%. The experimental gaps, after accounting heuristically for disorder, are still around 40% smaller than the computed gaps. However, for the case of tetracene layers in metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) devices we find that the measured activation gaps are close to those we compute. We discuss possible reasons why the difference between computed and measured activation gaps is larger in GaAs heterostructures than MIS devices. Finally, we present calculations using systems with up to 18 electrons of the gap at $\ensuremath{\nu}=\frac{5}{2}$ including width corrections.
