Abstract

We present a complete classification of integrable Yang-Baxter quantum circuits with open boundary conditions and arbitrary circuit geometries. Starting from the standard transfer-matrix construction with two types of staggered inhomogeneities, we derive a general mapping that determines the arrangement of circuit gates in terms of the inhomogeneities and the system size. We conjecture that time-periodic quantum circuits are integrable whenever the local bulk and boundary gates satisfy the Yang-Baxter equation and the same bulk gate is applied exactly once per period to every nearest-neighbor pair of spins. Our construction also provides an algorithm to detect Yang-Baxter integrability for circuits with arbitrary geometries. Furthermore, we introduce a third type of inhomogeneity, denoted by $ρ$, and demonstrate that the minimum possible circuit depth is four. We show that when these $ρ$-inhomogeneities are placed at the endpoints and in their immediate neighborhood, the resulting boundary gates can be interpreted as single gates acting on multiple sites. Our construction is fully general and applies to regular $R$-matrices, both of difference and non-difference type, together with their associated boundary matrices. As an application, we consider two-qubit gates corresponding to 6- and 8-vertex $R$-matrices of non-difference form satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation, and we construct the associated reflection matrices that generate integrable quantum circuits.

Integrability of open boundary driven quantum circuits

Chiara Paletta, Tomaž Prosen

In this paper, we address the problem of Yang-Baxter integrability of doubled quantum circuit of qubits (spins 1/2) with open boundary conditions where the two circuit replicas are only coupled at the left or right boundary. We investigate the cases where the bulk is given by elementary six vertex unitary gates of either the free fermionic XX type or interacting XXZ type. By using the Sklyanin’s construction of reflection algebra, we obtain the most general solutions of the boundary Yang-Baxter equation for such a setup. We use this solution to build, from the transfer matrix formalism, integrable circuits with two step discrete time Floquet (aka brickwork) dynamics. We prove that, only if the bulk is a free-model, the boundary matrices are in general non-factorizable, and for particular choice of free parameters yield non-trivial unitary dynamics with boundary interaction between the two chains. Then, we consider the limit of continuous time evolution and we give the interpretation of a restricted set of the boundary terms in the Lindbladian setting. Specifically, for a particular choice of free parameters, the solutions correspond to an open quantum system dynamics with the source terms representing injecting or removing particles from the boundary of the spin chain.

Integrable boundary conditions for staggered vertex models

Holger Frahm, Sascha Gehrmann

Abstract Yang–Baxter integrable vertex models with a generic Z 2 -staggering can be expressed in terms of composite R -matrices given in terms of the elementary R-matrices. Similarly, integrable open boundary conditions can be constructed through generalized reflection algebras based on these objects and their representations in terms of composite boundary matrices K ± . We show that only two types of staggering yield a local Hamiltonian with integrable open boundary conditions in this approach. The staggering in the underlying model allows for a second hierarchy of commuting integrals of motion (in addition to the one including the Hamiltonian obtained from the usual transfer matrix), starting with the so-called quasi momentum operator. In this paper, we show that this quasi momentum operator can be obtained together with the Hamiltonian for both periodic and open models in a unified way from enlarged Yang–Baxter or reflection algebras in the composite picture. For the special case of the staggered six-vertex model, this allows constructing an integrable spectral flow between the two local cases.

Integrability and charge transport in asymmetric quantum-circuit geometries

Chiara Paletta, Urban Duh, Balázs Pozsgay +1 more

Abstract We revisit the integrability of quantum circuits constructed from two-qubit unitary gates U that satisfy the Yang–Baxter equation. A brickwork arrangement of U typically corresponds to an integrable Trotterization of some Hamiltonian dynamics. Here, we consider more general circuit geometries which include circuits without any nontrivial space periodicity. We show that any time-periodic quantum circuit in which U is applied to each pair of neighbouring qubits exactly once per period remains integrable. We further generalize this framework to circuits with time-varying two-qubit gates. The spatial arrangement of gates in the integrable circuits considered herein can break the space-reflection symmetry even when U itself is symmetric. By analysing the dynamical spin susceptibility on ballistic hydrodynamic scale, we investigate how an asymmetric arrangement of gates affects the spin transport. While it induces nonzero higher odd moments in the dynamical spin susceptibility, the first moment, which corresponds to a drift in the spreading of correlations, remains zero. We explain this within a quasiparticle picture which suggests that a nonzero drift necessitates gates acting on distinct degrees of freedom. To the memory of Marko Medenjak, a dear friend and a brilliant colleague.

The Floquet Baxterisation

Yuan Miao, Vladimir Gritsev, Denis V. Kurlov

Quantum integrability has proven to be a useful tool to study quantum many-body systems out of equilibrium. In this paper we construct a generic framework for integrable quantum circuits through the procedure of Floquet Baxterisation. The integrability is guaranteed by establishing a connection between Floquet evolution operators and inhomogeneous transfer matrices obtained from the Yang-Baxter relations. This allows us to construct integrable Floquet evolution operators with arbitrary depths and various boundary conditions. Furthermore, we focus on the example related to the staggered 6-vertex model. In the scaling limit we establish a connection of this Floquet protocol with a non-rational conformal field theory. Employing the properties of the underlying affine Temperley-Lieb algebraic structure, we demonstrate the dynamical anti-unitary symmetry breaking in the easy-plane regime. We also give an overview of integrability-related quantum circuits, highlighting future research directions.

On the growth of operator entanglement in brickwork circuits with Yang--Baxter gates

Balázs Pozsgay

We study the operator entanglement of local operators in one-dimensional brickwork circuits whose two-site gate satisfies the braid relation; throughout this work, we call such a gate a Yang--Baxter gate. We establish upper bounds for several structured, overlapping classes of Yang--Baxter gates. We show that the operator Schmidt rank remains uniformly bounded in time for all qubit Yang--Baxter gates and, in arbitrary local dimension, for permutation gates obtained from non-degenerate Yang--Baxter maps. We also show that it grows at most polynomially for involutive dual-unitary Yang--Baxter gates and for arbitrary phase dressings of permutation gates obtained from non-degenerate Yang--Baxter maps. These results imply, respectively, constant and logarithmic upper bounds on the operator entanglement. Conversely, we construct a seven-state involutive Yang--Baxter gate without dual unitarity and a one-site operator whose exact operator Schmidt rank grows exponentially, although the corresponding operator entropies remain undetermined. Entanglement growth in the general Yang--Baxter case remains open. All proofs and selected examples were constructed by ChatGPT 5.6 Sol.

Correlations and commuting transfer matrices in integrable unitary circuits

Pieter W. Claeys, Jonah Herzog-Arbeitman, Austen Lamacraft

We consider a unitary circuit where the underlying gates are chosen to be \check{R} R ̌ -matrices satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation and correlation functions can be expressed through a transfer matrix formalism. These transfer matrices are no longer Hermitian and differ from the ones guaranteeing local conservation laws, but remain mutually commuting at different values of the spectral parameter defining the circuit. Exact eigenstates can still be constructed as a Bethe ansatz, but while these transfer matrices are diagonalizable in the inhomogeneous case, the homogeneous limit corresponds to an exceptional point where multiple eigenstates coalesce and Jordan blocks appear. Remarkably, the complete set of (generalized) eigenstates is only obtained when taking into account a combinatorial number of nontrivial vacuum states. In all cases, the Bethe equations reduce to those of the integrable spin-1 chain and exhibit a global SU(2) symmetry, significantly reducing the total number of eigenstates required in the calculation of correlation functions. A similar construction is shown to hold for the calculation of out-of-time-order correlations.
