Non-invertible symmetries and modular invariance in lattice models

Abstract

We consider classical 2d lattice models with face interactions defined in terms of a fusion category. The symmetries of such models typically include an algebra of topological operators sitting on a closed path in the lattice. In the case when the face interactions obey the Temperley-Lieb (TL) relations, we present a generic algorithm to determine the decomposition of the transfer-matrix space of states as a direct sum of simple TL modules. We apply this approach to several examples, and analyse the action of topological operators. As an application, we compute the modular transformation of the irreducible TL characters at primitive roots of unity.

On lattice models of gapped phases with fusion category symmetries

Kansei Inamura

Abstract We construct topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) and commuting projector Hamiltonians for any 1+1d gapped phases with non-anomalous fusion category symmetries, i.e. finite symmetries that admit SPT phases. The construction is based on two-dimensional state sum TQFT whose input datum is an H-simple left H-comodule algebra, where H is a finite dimensional semisimple Hopf algebra. We show that the actions of fusion category symmetries $$ \mathcal{C} $$ C on the boundary conditions of these state sum TQFTs are represented by module categories over $$ \mathcal{C} $$ C . This agrees with the classification of gapped phases with symmetry $$ \mathcal{C} $$ C . We also find that the commuting projector Hamiltonians for these state sum TQFTs have fusion category symmetries at the level of the lattice models and hence provide lattice realizations of gapped phases with fusion category symmetries. As an application, we discuss the edge modes of SPT phases based on these commuting projector Hamiltonians. Finally, we mention that we can extend the construction of topological field theories to the case of anomalous fusion category symmetries by replacing a semisimple Hopf algebra with a semisimple pseudo-unitary connected weak Hopf algebra.

Lattice non-invertible symmetry from non-commuting transfer matrices

Eric Vernier, Yuan Miao, Masahito Yamazaki

Conventional quantum integrability is encoded in a commuting algebra of transfer matrices. By contrast, several models possess additional non-commuting conserved charges with important physical consequences, yet the nature of the corresponding symmetry has remained elusive. Focusing on the XXZ spin chain at roots of unity, we show that the non-Abelian analogue of the commuting transfer-matrix algebra is governed by quadratic relations following from a new class of unbalanced Yang--Baxter/RLL relations. This quadratic algebra is shown to encode precisely the Onsager algebra, for which we construct explicit matrix-product representations of both its generators and its duality defect line. The latter obeys $\mathbb{Z}_N$ Tambara--Yamagami fusion rules, thereby providing a lattice realization of the topological defect lines of the compactified boson conformal field theory. Our results identify non-Abelian transfer-matrix algebras as a microscopic origin for Onsager symmetry and dualities in lattice models.

Temperley-Lieb modules and local operators for critical ADE models

Yacine Ikhlef, Alexi Morin-Duchesne

We investigate critical restricted solid-on-solid models associated to Dynkin diagrams of type $A$, $D$ and $E$, with fixed, periodic and twisted periodic boundary conditions. These models are endowed with an action of the diagrams of the Temperley-Lieb category. For each model, we obtain the decomposition of the state space as a direct sum of irreducible modules over the Temperley-Lieb algebra $\mathsf{TL}_N(β)$ or its periodic incarnation $\mathsf{\mathcal EPTL}_N(β)$. This allows us to recover the known conformal partition functions for these models in the continuum scaling limit. For each irreducible factor arising in the decompositions, we define an associated local operator on the lattice, which behaves like a connectivity operator. Using knowledge from the Temperley-Lieb representation theory at roots of unity, we show that these operators satisfy certain linear difference relations, which are lattice counterparts of the singular-vector relations in conformal field theory.

Topological lattice gauge theory enriched by non-invertible symmetry

Lea E. Bottini, Clement Delcamp, Edmund Heng +2 more

We use finite group topological lattice gauge theory, also known as the quantum double model, as a lens to explore a notion of topological order enriched by a non-invertible symmetry. For invertible symmetry enriched topological order, there is an established axiomatisation in terms of a G-crossed braided fusion category. We lay the foundations for a generalisation of this notion. By condensing an arbitrary algebra of charges in a quantum double model, we demonstrate that the category of localised excitations in the resulting theory forms a hypergroup-graded extension of the category of deconfined excitations. For every element in the hypergroup, the associated domain wall acts in a typically non-invertible way on these localised excitations. Both this action and the monoidal structure are compatible with the hypergroup grading. The actual categorical action is encoded in a Hopf monad on the category of localised excitations, and gauging the non-invertible symmetry amounts to computing the category of modules over this Hopf monad. Finally, we outline how this framework naturally extends to theories obtained by condensing algebras in a generic string-net model.

Algebraic Fusion in a (2+1)-dimensional Lattice Model with Generalized Symmetries

Chinmay Giridhar, Philipp Vojta, Zohar Nussinov +2 more

The notion of quantum symmetry has recently been extended to include reduced-dimensional transformations and algebraic structures beyond groups. Such generalized symmetries lead to exotic phases of matter and excitations that defy Landau's original paradigm. Here, we develop an algebraic framework for systematically deriving the fusion rules of topological defects in higher-dimensional lattice systems with non-invertible generalized symmetries, and focus on a (2+1)-dimensional quantum Ising plaquette model as a concrete illustration. We show that bond-algebraic automorphisms, when combined with the so-called half-gauging procedure, reveal the structure of the non-invertible duality symmetry operators, which can be explicitly represented as a sequential quantum circuit. The resulting duality defects are constrained by the model's rigid higher symmetries (lower-dimensional subsystem symmetries), leading to restricted mobility. We establish the fusion algebra of these defects. Finally, in constructing the non-invertible duality transformation, we explicitly verify that it acts as a partial isometry on the physical Hilbert space, thereby satisfying a recent generalization of Wigner's theorem applicable to non-invertible symmetries.

Remarks on non-invertible symmetries on a tensor product Hilbert space in 1+1 dimensions

Kansei Inamura

We propose an index of non-invertible symmetry operators in 1+1 dimensions and discuss its relation to the realizability of non-invertible symmetries on the tensor product of finite dimensional on-site Hilbert spaces on the lattice. Our index generalizes the Gross-Nesme-Vogts-Werner index of invertible symmetry operators represented by quantum cellular automata (QCAs). Assuming that all fusion channels of symmetry operators have the same index, we show that the fusion rules of finitely many symmetry operators on a tensor product Hilbert space can agree, up to QCAs, only with those of weakly integral fusion categories. We also discuss an attempt to establish an index theory for non-invertible symmetries within the framework of tensor networks. To this end, we first propose a general class of matrix product operators (MPOs) that describe non-invertible symmetries on a tensor product Hilbert space. These MPOs, which we refer to as topological injective MPOs, include all invertible symmetries, non-anomalous fusion category symmetries, and the Kramers-Wannier symmetries for finite abelian groups. For topological injective MPOs, we construct the defect Hilbert spaces and the corresponding sequential quantum circuit representations. We also show that all fusion channels of topological injective MPOs have the same index if there exist fusion and splitting tensors that satisfy appropriate conditions. The existence of such fusion and splitting tensors has not been proven in general, although we construct them explicitly for all examples of topological injective MPOs listed above.
