Exponentiation of higher-point and higher-genus Virasoro conformal blocks in the semiclassical limit

Abstract

A bstract A long-standing conjecture claims that Virasoro conformal blocks exponentiate in the semiclassical limit c → ∞ with h / c finite. However, this has been proven only for four-point blocks on the sphere and one-point blocks on the torus. Here we extend the proof to general conformal blocks for higher-point functions and higher-genus backgrounds in arbitrary channels. The statement is to be understood at the level of a formal power series. Our proof builds upon a novel extension of the oscillator method for the computation of conformal blocks to cases where three internal lines meet at a vertex. This extension also gives a new constructive method to compute global conformal blocks in 2d CFTs at general genus.

Virasoro conformal blocks in closed form

Eric Perlmutter

Virasoro conformal blocks are fixed in principle by symmetry, but a closed-form expression is unknown in the general case. In this work, we provide two new closed-form expansions for the four-point Virasoro blocks on the sphere, for arbitrary operator dimensions and central charge c. We do so by solving known recursion relations. One representation is a sum over hypergeometric global blocks, whose coefficients we provide at arbitrary level. The other is a sum over semiclassical Virasoro blocks obtained in the limit in which two external operator dimensions scale linearly with large c. In both cases, the 1/c expansion of the Virasoro blocks is easily extracted. We discuss applications of these expansions to entanglement and thermality in conformal field theories and particle scattering in three-dimensional quantum gravity.

Virasoro vacuum block at next-to-leading order in the heavy-light limit

Matteo Beccaria A, Alberto Fachechi, Guido Macorini

We consider the semiclassical limit of the vacuum Virasoro block describing the diagonal 4-point correlation functions on the sphere. At large central charge c, after exponentiation, it depends on two fixed ratios h H /c and h L /c, where h H,L are the conformal dimensions of the 4-point function operators. The semiclassical block may be expanded in powers of the light ratio h L /c and the leading non-trivial (linear) order is known in closed form as a function of h H /c. Recently, this contribution has been matched against AdS3 gravity calculations where heavy operators build up a classical geometry corresponding to a BTZ black hole, while the light operators are described by a geodesic in this background. Here, we compute for the first time the next-to-leading quadratic correction $$ \mathcal{O} $$ ((h L /c)2), again in closed form for generic heavy operator ratio h H /c. The result is a highly non-trivial extension of the leading order and may be relevant for further refined AdS3/CFT2 tests. Applications to the two-interval Rényi entropy are also presented.

Various semiclassical limits of torus conformal blocks

Konstantin Alkalaev, Roman Geiko, Vladimir Rappoport

We study four types of one-point torus blocks arising in the large central charge regime. There are the global block, the light block, the heavy-light block, and the linearized classical block, according to different regimes of conformal dimensions. It is shown that the blocks are not independent being connected to each other by various links. We find that the global, light, and heavy-light blocks correspond to three different contractions of the Virasoro algebra. Also, we formulate the c-recursive representation of the one-point torus blocks which is relevant in the semiclassical approximation.

Classical conformal blocks, Coulomb gas integrals and Richardson-Gaudin models

Marcin Radosław Piątek, R. G. Nazmitdinov, Antonio Puente +1 more

Abstract Virasoro conformal blocks are universal ingredients of correlation functions of two-dimensional conformal field theories (2d CFTs) with Virasoro symmetry. It is acknowledged that in the (classical) limit of large central charge of the Virasoro algebra and large external, and intermediate conformal weights with fixed ratios of these parameters Virasoro blocks exponentiate to functions known as Zamolodchikovs’ classical blocks. The latter are special functions which have awesome mathematical and physical applications. Uniformization, monodromy problems, black holes physics, quantum gravity, entanglement, quantum chaos, holography, $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 gauge theory and quantum integrable systems (QIS) are just some of contexts, where classical Virasoro blocks are in use. In this paper, exploiting known connections between power series and integral representations of (quantum) Virasoro blocks, we propose new finite closed formulae for certain multi-point classical Virasoro blocks on the sphere. Indeed, combining classical limit of Virasoro blocks expansions with a saddle point asymptotics of Dotsenko-Fateev (DF) integrals one can relate classical Virasoro blocks with a critical value of the “Dotsenko-Fateev matrix model action”. The latter is the “DF action” evaluated on a solution of saddle point equations which take the form of Bethe equations for certain QIS (Gaudin spin models). A link with integrable models is our main motivation for this research line. For instance, analogous quantities as the “DF on-shell action” appear in 2d CFT realization of the so-called Richardson’s solution of the reduced BCS model describing physics of ultra-small superconducting grains. Precisely, the Richardson solution and its particular limit characterizing the rational Gaudin model have known implementation in 2d CFT in terms of a free field representation of certain (perturbed and unperturbed) WZW blocks. The WZW analogue of the “DF on-shell action” appears here and plays a crucial role, it is a generating function for eigenvalues of quantum integrals of motion. An exploration of relationships between power expansions and Coulomb gas representations of the aforementioned WZW blocks could pave a way for new analytical tools useful in the study of models of the Richardson-Gaudin type.

Genus Two Modular Bootstrap

Minjae Cho, Scott Collier, Xi Yin

We study the Virasoro conformal block decomposition of the genus two partition function of a two-dimensional CFT by expanding around a Z3-invariant Riemann surface that is a three-fold cover of the Riemann sphere branched at four points, and explore constraints from genus two modular invariance and unitarity. In particular, we find 'critical surfaces' that constrain the structure constants of a CFT beyond what is accessible via the crossing equation on the sphere.
