Abstract

Higher-order correlations are essential for understanding exotic phases and uncovering universal aspects of quantum dynamics. While inelastic neutron scattering provides well-established access to two-particle correlations, measuring correlations in solids involving more than two particles remains a major challenge. Focusing on magnetic excitations in the Heisenberg spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chain, we demonstrate that resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) can selectively probe multi-spin dynamical correlations by exciting distinct intermediate states through energy detuning. Through theoretical modeling, we isolate the two- and multi- spin responses, and establish that: (i) The resonant energies of the two- and multi- spin dynamical correlations are separated by $\approx \frac{3}{4}J$; implying that the multi-spin part of the cross-section comes from intermediate states that contain spin flips; (ii) The spectral weight of the two-spin channel exhibits a Lorentzian resonant energy profile consistent with a single dominant electronic configuration, whereas the multi-spin channel response shows a Gaussian-like profile, implying contributions from multiple intermediate spin configurations. These characteristics are reproduced by exact diagonalization of the $t-J$ Hamiltonian, which further reveals that the widths of Lorentzian and Gaussian resonant energy profiles depend primarily on core-hole lifetime ($Γ/2$) and $\frac{2J}Γ$, respectively. Controlled access to multi-spin dynamics, using RIXS energy detuning as a knob, can open new pathways to explore many-body dynamics in quantum materials.

Quantum Wake Dynamics from Distinct Spectroscopic Perturbations

Umesh Kumar, Gonzalo Álvarez, David Alan Tennant +1 more

Quantum wake dynamics in quantum magnets have recently been inferred from the dynamical spin structure factor, which probes only a restricted class of local perturbations. Here, we show that resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) selection rules act as an operator filter on fractionalized excitations, producing distinct quantum wakes in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. Using explicit real-time evolution of single-spin and spin-conserving bond correlators, we find that the conventional spin response propagates up to the maximum spinon velocity, $v_s=\fracπ{2} J$, whereas the bond channels concentrate their spectral weight into a slower dominant wake with $v\simeq 0.92 J$, while weaker components remain bounded by the full spinon light cone. The corresponding momentum- and frequency-resolved responses map onto experimentally accessible RIXS channels, demonstrating that different spectroscopic perturbations resolve complementary pathways of many-body propagation beyond the neutron-scattering spin structure factor. Their inelastic spectral weights further provide access to quantum Fisher information, while equal-time bond sum rules connect the same spectroscopic channels to the ground-state energy. Because the same correlators can be prepared and measured on quantum hardware, they also define direct, experimentally anchored benchmarks for quantum simulations, particularly in frustrated and higher-dimensional magnets where controlled classical real-time calculations become challenging.

Accessing Multi-triplons in Spin Ladders using Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

Gary Ferkinghoff, Leanna B. Müller, Götz Silvester Uhrig +2 more

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) has proven a powerful tool to investigate dynamic magnetic correlations, yielding complementary insights compared to neutron scattering. A key issue is the interpretation of spectroscopic measurements in terms of quasi-particle excitations. In this paper we study the spin-conserving channel of RIXS spectra for two-leg quantum spin ladders using continuous unitary transformations. We find that multi-triplon continua and bound states are the leading contribution, opening new venues for observing and characterizing multi-triplons in quantum spin systems.

Spin-Exchange Dynamical Structure Factor of the S=1/2 Heisenberg Chain

Antoine Klauser, Jorn Mossel, Jean-Sébastien Caux +1 more

We determine the spin-exchange dynamical structure factor of the Heisenberg spin chain, as is measured by indirect resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). We find that two-spin RIXS excitations nearly entirely fractionalize into two-spinon states. These share the same continuum lower bound as single-spin neutron scattering excitations, even if the relevant final states belong to orthogonal symmetry sectors. The RIXS spectral weight is mainly carried by higher-energy excitations, and is beyond the reach of the low-energy effective theories of Luttinger liquid type.

Probing multi-spinon excitations outside of the two-spinon continuum in the antiferromagnetic spin chain cuprate Sr2CuO3

Justine Schlappa, U. Kumar, K. J. Zhou +8 more

Abstract One-dimensional (1D) magnetic insulators have attracted significant interest as a platform for studying quasiparticle fractionalization, quantum criticality, and emergent phenomena. The spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with antiferromagnetic nearest neighbour interactions is an important reference system; its elementary magnetic excitations are spin-1/2 quasiparticles called spinons that are created in even numbers. However, while the excitation continuum associated with two-spinon states is routinely observed, the study of four-spinon and higher multi-spinon states is an open area of research. Here we show that four-spinon excitations can be accessed directly in Sr2CuO3 using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) in a region of phase space clearly separated from the two-spinon continuum. Our finding is made possible by the fundamental differences in the correlation function probed by RIXS in comparison to other probes. This advance holds promise as a tool in the search for novel quantum states and quantum spin liquids.

Multi-spinon and antiholon excitations probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering on doped one-dimensional antiferromagnets

Umesh Kumar, Alberto Nocera, Elbio R. Dagotto +1 more

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the oxygen K -edge has recently accessed multi-spinon excitations in the one-dimensional antiferromagnet (1D-AFM) Sr 2 CuO 3 , where four-spinon excitations are resolved separately from the two-spinon continuum. This technique, therefore, provides new opportunities to study fractionalized quasiparticle excitations in doped 1D-AFMs. To this end, we carried out exact diagonalization studies of the doped t – J model and provided predictions for oxygen K -edge RIXS experiments on doped 1D-AFMs. We show that the RIXS spectra are rich, containing distinct two- and four-spinon excitations, dispersive antiholon excitations, and combinations thereof. Our results highlight how RIXS complements inelastic neutron scattering experiments by accessing additional charge and spin components of fractionalized quasiparticles.

Spin order and spin excitation spectra of spin-1/2 tetramer chains

Junli Li, Jun-Qing Cheng, Trinanjan Datta +1 more

Abstract We investigate the spin dynamics of a 1D spin-1/2 Heisenberg tetramer chain. Employing a combination of density matrix renormalization group, quantum renormalization group, and perturbation theory techniques, we compute the energy levels and the quantum phase diagram, analyze the phase transitions, and evaluate the dynamical structure factor (DSF), which is related to the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectrum and the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectrum of fractionalized and collective excitations. Our calculations suggest that the chain can transition between a hidden Z 2 × Z 2 discrete symmetry preserving tetramer phase and a Haldane phase with non-vanishing string order that breaks the hidden symmetry. These two gapped phases are intervened by an intermediate deconfined quantum critical state comprising of free spins and three-site doublets, which is a gapless critical phase with deconfined spinons that can be detected either by INS or L -edge RIXS. We find that the tetramer chain can support fractionalized (spinon) and collective (triplon and quinton) excitations. In the ferromagnetic intra-tetramer limit, the chain can support a quinton excitation which has a five-fold degenerate excited state. String order parameter calculations suggest CuInVO 5 should be in a Haldane-like phase whose INS or L -edge RIXS spectrum can support observable single-spin excitations including triplon and quinton excitations. We also identify possible two-particle excitations (two-singlon, two-triplon, triplon-quinton, and two-quinton excitations) resulting from the double spin-flip effect in the K -edge RIXS spectrum.
