Abstract

We study the structure and transversal logical capabilities of stabilizer quantum error correcting codes. Among our results, we identify universal lower bounds on circuit depth to generate a full logical Clifford algebra, and develop novel constructions of logical transversal gates including a new depth-one transversal phase $\mathrm{\overline{S}}$ gate in the rotated surface code and a depth-one intra-block $\mathrm{\overline{CZ}}$ gate in the 2D-toric code that generalizes to all odd distances and all lengths $L\ge3$, respectively. Finally, we construct a high-rate non-LDPC CSS code family with parameters $[[n,\sqrt{n},Θ({n^β})]]$ where $β\approx 0.2823$ in one demonstrated case, that provably possesses a constant-depth complete 2-local transversal logical Clifford basis instruction set architecture (ISA) composed of all individually targeted $\mathrm{\overline{S}}$, $\mathrm{\overline{SHS}} = \sqrt{X}$, and $\mathrm{\overline{CZ}}$ gates. This ISA is depth-one for certain subfamilies that we design and generally constant-depth under certain conditions. The code family is built from a small code with parameters $[[n_0, 2, d_0]]$, and is tunable in the standard way: it tiles out to form utility-scale logical qubit counts, and it scales up through concatenation to achieve higher distances and error suppression. We show that this construction preserves the depth-one complete transversal logical Clifford basis ISA when composed with these commuting construction actions, inheriting structure from the core codes so that at scale the complete logical Clifford basis ISA remains depth-one up to depth-two addressable operations between tiled cores. We call these Quantum Logic Codes.

Beyond transversality: structure of Clifford circuits for CSS codes

Victor V. Albert

We characterize four groups of Clifford circuits for Calderbank--Shor--Steane (CSS) codes that are relevant to fault-tolerant logical operations. First, we show that every code-preserving Clifford circuit is a product of Z-diagonal circuits, composed of S and CZ gates, and their X-basis analogues. Second, we define the two-fold transversal group, generated by depth-one two-local code-preserving circuits, and show that each of its elements can be expressed as a product of layers consisting of either Z-diagonal, X-diagonal, or CNOT gates. As a corollary, every transversal gate is a product of three transversal diagonal circuits; for connected non-self-dual codes, two such circuits suffice. We further show that every code-preserving automorphism circuit, consisting of single-qubit Clifford gates and permutations, has a normal form comprising a Hadamard layer, a permutation, and two diagonal circuits. We also define a two-fold automorphism group, in which a depth-one two-local circuit may be code-preserving up to a permutation, and show that its logical image can be larger than that of the two-fold transversal group. For 231 CSS codes, we provide explicit generators and determine the logical image of the two-fold transversal group. We tabulate 173 codes whose full logical Clifford group is generated by two-fold-transversal circuits, including codes of distances 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 13, with respective best rates 2/5, 3/4, 34/77, 17/28, 14/25, 1/27, 3/56, and 1/33. We construct families of CSS codes from bipartite grids, cut-complements, and quadrics, and census the self-dual codes invariant under rank-3 permutation groups. Many of these codes realize the full logical Clifford group in this way.

Quantum Codes with Addressable and Transversal Non-Clifford Gates

Zhiyang He, Vinod Vaikuntanathan, Adam Wills +1 more

The development of quantum codes with good error correction parameters and useful sets of transversal gates is a problem of major interest in quantum error-correction. Abundant prior works have studied transversal gates which are restricted to acting on all logical qubits simultaneously. In this work, we study codes that support transversal gates which induce $\textit{addressable}$ logical gates, i.e., the logical gates act on logical qubits of our choice. As we consider scaling to high-rate codes, the study and design of low-overhead, addressable logical operations presents an important problem for both theoretical and practical purposes. Our primary result is the construction of an explicit qubit code for which $\textit{any}$ triple of logical qubits across one, two, or three codeblocks can be addressed with a logical $\mathsf{CCZ}$ gate via a depth-one circuit of physical $\mathsf{CCZ}$ gates, and whose parameters are asymptotically good, up to polylogarithmic factors. The result naturally generalizes to other gates including the $\mathsf{C}^{\ell} Z$ gates for $\ell \neq 2$. Going beyond this, we develop a formalism for constructing quantum codes with $\textit{addressable and transversal}$ gates. Our framework, called $\textit{addressable orthogonality}$, encompasses the original triorthogonality framework of Bravyi and Haah (Phys. Rev. A 2012), and extends this and other frameworks to study addressable gates. We demonstrate the power of this framework with the construction of an asymptotically good qubit code for which $\textit{pre-designed}$, pairwise disjoint triples of logical qubits within a single codeblock may be addressed with a logical $\mathsf{CCZ}$ gate via a physical depth-one circuit of $\mathsf{Z}$, $\mathsf{CZ}$ and $\mathsf{CCZ}$ gates. In an appendix, we show that our framework extends to addressable and transversal $T$ gates, up to Clifford corrections.

Improved Transversal Non-Clifford Gates from Cup Products

Louis Golowich, Itzhak Tamo, Guanyu Zhu

It is a major challenge in quantum fault-tolerance to obtain low-overhead protocols for performing non-Clifford gates. In this vein, we construct quantum codes with low-weight stabilizers that support transversal (i.e. low-depth) implementations of the non-Clifford $C^{r-1}Z$ gate, for every constant $r\geq 3$. In particular, we obtain length-$n$ quantum LDPC codes (with constant-weight stabilizers) of polynomial distance $d\geq n^{(1-ε)/r}$ supporting transversal $C^{r-1}Z$ gates on a close-to-linear number $k\geq n^{1-ε}$ of disjoint tuples of logical qubits, for arbitrarily small $ε>0$. Our construction is the first with constant-weight stabilizers that obtains $dk\gg n$, and as a consequence achieves arbitrarily small magic state overhead exponent $γ=\log(n/k)/\log(d)>0$. Comparable prior constructions instead required at least polylogarithmic stabilizer weight. We also show how to obtain linearly many $k=Ω(n)$ logical $C^{r-1}Z$ gates, though with stabilizer weight and physical circuit depth $n^ε$. We show that our transversal gates also support addressing (i.e. targeting) of specific logical qubits. To obtain our codes, we develop a general transformation based on cup products that maps classical codes satisfying a multiplication property to quantum codes with transversal $C^{r-1}Z$. We apply this transformation to a new family of classical Tanner codes that we construct from punctured tensor products of algebraic codes.

Construction of the full logical Clifford group for high-rate quantum Reed-Muller codes using only transversal and fold-transversal gates

Theerapat Tansuwannont, Tim Chan, Ryuji Takagi

To build large-scale quantum computers while minimizing resource requirements, one may want to use high-rate quantum error-correcting codes that can efficiently encode information. However, realizing an addressable gate$\unicode{x2014}$a logical gate on a subset of logical qubits within a high-rate code$\unicode{x2014}$in a fault-tolerant manner can be challenging and may require ancilla qubits. Transversal and fold-transversal gates could provide a means to fault-tolerantly implement logical gates using a constant-depth circuit without ancilla qubits, but available gates of these types could be limited depending on the code and might not be addressable. In this work, we study a family of $[\![n=2^m,k={m \choose m/2}\approx n/\sqrt{π\log_2(n)/2},d=2^{m/2}=\sqrt{n}]\!]$ self-dual quantum Reed$\unicode{x2013}$Muller codes, where $m$ is a positive even number. For any code in this family, we construct a generating set of the full logical Clifford group comprising only transversal and fold-transversal gates, thus enabling the implementation of any addressable Clifford gate. To our knowledge, this is the first known construction of the full logical Clifford group using only transversal and fold-transversal gates without requiring ancilla qubits for a family of codes in which $k$ grows near-linearly in $n$.

Constant-rate quantum codes with low-weight stabilizers and full logical Clifford actions via transversal and fold-transversal gates

Takaya Matsuura, Yohji Chin, Shohei Kiryu +1 more

Low-space-overhead fault-tolerant quantum computation requires not only high-rate quantum error-correcting codes but also space-efficient implementations of logical operations. Transversal and fold-transversal gates are promising since they limit error propagation and require no additional qubits. However, the logical operations they enable are typically restricted, and a central challenge is to construct codes that combine a complete set of logical Clifford gates with favorable code parameters. In this work, we introduce a family of quantum codes with an asymptotically constant encoding rate and sublogarithmically growing stabilizer weight, while supporting the entire logical Clifford group using only transversal and fold-transversal gates. Our construction is based on classical codes whose code spaces are absolutely irreducible Steinberg modules of their Tanner-graph automorphism groups. Taking hypergraph products of these classical codes yields quantum codes for which all logical Clifford operations can be synthesized from a fixed set of transversal and fold-transversal gates. Moreover, the slow growth of the stabilizer weight enables a high error-correcting performance in small instances. These results provide a path toward fault-tolerant quantum computation with low space overhead using transversal and fold-transversal gates.

Transversal AND in Quantum Codes

Christine Li, Lia Yeh

The AND gate is not reversible$\unicode{x2014}$on qubits. However, it is reversible on qutrits, making it a building block for efficient simulation of qubit computation using qutrits. We first observe that there are multiple two-qutrit Clifford+T unitaries that realize the AND gate with T-count 3, and its generalizations to $n$ qubits with T-count $3n-3$. Our main result is the construction of a novel qutrit $\mathopen{[\![} 6,2,2 \mathclose{]\!]}$ quantum error-correcting code with a transversal implementation of the AND gate. The key insight in our approach is that a symmetric T-depth one circuit decomposition$\unicode{x2014}$composed of a CX circuit, T and T dagger gates, followed by the CX circuit in reverse$\unicode{x2014}$of a given unitary can be interpreted as a CSS code. We can increase the code distance by augmenting the code circuit with additional stabilizers while preserving the logical gate. This results in a code with a "built-in" transversal implementation of the original unitary, which can be further concatenated to attain a $\mathopen{[\![} 48,2,4 \mathclose{]\!]}$ code with the same transversal logical gate. Furthermore, we present several protocols for mixed qubit-qutrit codes which we call Qubit Subspace Codes, and for magic state distillation and injection.
