Abstract

We generalize an influential framework for exactly solvable quantum dimer models with dual Ising gauge theory descriptions realizing the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ topological phase from trivalent to tetravalent parent lattices. The resulting quantum dimer models live on crossed-medial lattices and possess the remarkable feature of having crossed plaquettes, leading to transition graphs with generically intersecting loops. This non-planar structure runs counter to established templates for analytically tractable dimer liquids. As the simplest realization of the construction, we introduce an exactly solvable quantum dimer model on the checkerboard lattice that allows an exact mapping to the toric code, thus providing a particularly direct connection between the latter and Anderson's short range resonating valence bond paradigm. We further show that a corresponding crossed ruby lattice construction, dual to an Ising gauge theory on the kagome lattice, naturally falls within the same framework. More generally, the construction gives rise to a broad class of exactly solvable crossed-medial quantum dimer models and admits natural iteration, generating cascades of solvable $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ topological dimer liquids beyond the standard planar setting. We furthermore extend Kasteleyn methods to the relevant non-planar graphs, enabling controlled wave-function deformations away from the commuting-projector points while retaining efficient evaluation of correlation functions.

Quantum Dimer Model on the Kagome Lattice: Solvable Dimer-Liquid and Ising Gauge Theory

Grégoire Misguich, Didina Serban, Vincent Pasquier

We introduce quantum dimer models on lattices made of corner-sharing triangles. These lattices include the kagome lattice and can be defined in arbitrary geometry. They realize fully disordered and gapped dimer-liquid phase with topological degeneracy and deconfined fractional excitations, as well as solid phases. Using geometrical properties of the lattice, several results are obtained exactly, including the full spectrum of a dimer liquid. These models offer a very natural-and maybe the simplest possible-framework to illustrate general concepts such as fractionalization, topological order, and relation to Z2 gauge theories.

Exact solution and correlations of a dimer model on the checkerboard lattice

Julia Wildeboer, Zohar Nussinov, Alexander Seidel

We present analytic results for a special dimer model on the nonbipartite and nonplanar checkerboard lattice that does not allow for parallel dimers surrounding diagonal links. We exactly calculate the number of closed packed dimer coverings on finite checkerboard lattices under periodic boundary conditions and determine all dimer-dimer correlations. The latter are found to vanish beyond a certain distance. We find that this solvable model, despite being nonplanar, is in close kinship with well-known paradigm-setting planar counterparts that allow exact mappings to ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ lattice gauge theory.

Topological Z2 resonating-valence-bond quantum spin liquid on the ruby lattice

Saeed S. Jahromi, Román Orús

We construct a short-range resonating-valence-bond (RVB) state on the ruby lattice, using projected entangled-pair states with bond dimension $D=3$. By introducing nonlocal moves to the dimer patterns on the torus, we distinguish four distinct sectors in the space of dimer coverings, which is a signature of the topological nature of the RVB wave function. Furthermore, by calculating the reduced density matrix of a bipartition of the RVB state on an infinite cylinder and exploring its entanglement entropy, we confirm the topological nature of the RVB wave function by obtaining a nonzero topological contribution, $\ensuremath{\gamma}=\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{ln}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}2$, consistent with that of a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ topological quantum spin liquid. We also calculate the ground-state energy of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the ruby lattice and compare it with the RVB energy. Finally, we construct a quantum dimer model for the ruby lattice and discuss it as a possible parent Hamiltonian for the RVB wave function.

Exactly Solvable Topological Phase Transition in a Quantum Dimer Model

Laura Shou, Jeet Shah, Matthew Lerner-Brecher +3 more

We consider a family of generalized Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) Hamiltonians, which are reverse-engineered to have an arbitrary edge-weighted superposition of dimer coverings as their exact ground state at the RK point. We focus on a quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice, with doubly periodic edge weights. For simplicity we consider a $2\times1$ periodic model in which all weights are set to one except for a tunable horizontal edge weight labeled $α$. We analytically show that the model exhibits a continuous quantum phase transition at $α=3$, changing from a topological $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum spin liquid ($α<3$) to a columnar ordered state ($α>3$). The dimer-dimer correlator decays exponentially on both sides of the transition with the correlation length $ξ\propto1/|α-3|$ and as a power-law at criticality. The vison correlator exhibits an exponential decay in the spin liquid phase, but becomes a constant in the ordered phase, which we explain in terms of loop statistics of the double-dimer model. Using finite-size scaling of the vison correlator, we extract critical exponents consistent with the 2D Ising universality class. Additionally, we analytically show that the topological Rényi entropy of order $\infty$ (topological min-entropy) changes from $\log2$ for the quantum spin liquid phase $α<3$, to $0$ for the ordered phase $α>3$, thereby analytically confirming the topological nature of the phase transition.

Double-semion topological order from exactly solvable quantum dimer models

Yang Qi, Zheng‐Cheng Gu, Hong Yao

We construct a generalized quantum dimer model on two-dimensional nonbipartite lattices, including the triangular lattice, the star lattice, and the kagome lattice. At the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point, we obtain its exact ground states that are shown to be a fully gapped quantum spin liquid with the double-semion topological order. The ground-state wave function of such a model at the RK point is a superposition of dimer configurations with a nonlocal sign structure determined by counting the number of loops in the transition graph. We explicitly demonstrate the double-semion topological order in the ground states by showing the semionic statistics of monomer excitations. We also discuss possible implications of such double-semion resonating valence bond states to candidate quantum spin-liquid systems discovered experimentally and numerically in the past few years.

Unifying Kitaev Magnets, Kagomé Dimer Models, and Ruby Rydberg Spin Liquids

Ruben Verresen, Ashvin Vishwanath

The exploration of quantum spin liquids (QSLs) has been guided by different approaches including the resonating valence bond (RVB) picture, deconfined lattice gauge theories, and the Kitaev model.More recently, a spin-liquid ground state was numerically established on the ruby lattice, inspired by the Rydberg blockade mechanism. Here, we unify these varied approaches in a single parent Hamiltonian, in which local fluctuations of anyons stabilize deconfinement. The parent Hamiltonian is defined on kagomé triangleseach hosting four RVB-like states-and includes only Ising interactions and single-site transverse fields. In the weak-field limit, the ruby spin liquid and exactly soluble kagomé dimer models are recovered, while the strong-field limit reduces to the Kitaev honeycomb model, thereby unifying three seemingly different approaches to QSLs.We similarly obtain the chiral Yao-Kivelson model, the honeycomb toric code, and a new spin-1 quadrupolar Kitaev model. The last is shown to be in a QSL phase by a nonlocal mapping to the kagomé Ising antiferromagnet. We demonstrate various applications of our framework, including (a) an adiabatic deformation of the ruby lattice model to the exactly soluble kagomé dimer model, conclusively establishing the QSL phase in the former and (b) demystifying the dynamical protocol for measuring offdiagonal strings in the Rydberg implementation of the ruby lattice spin liquid.More generally, we find an intimate connection between Kitaev couplings and the repulsive interactions used for emergent dimer models. For instance, we show how a spin-1=2 XXZ model on the ruby lattice encodes a Kitaev honeycomb model, providing a new route toward realizing the latter in cold-atom or solid-state systems.
