Abstract

We introduce a one dimensional spin $\frac{1}{2}$ Hamiltonian with multi-site interactions, but still local. The algebra of its Hamiltonian densities resembles that of the transverse field Ising model. Using this fact we show that its spectrum is free-fermionic but with a huge degeneracy for each level. The source of the degeneracy is a set of local conserved quantities that act like a classical background field for the quantum system. The thermodynamics of this system is contrasted with the standard Ising model. At the gapless points in the energy spectrum, we show that this system can be derived from the quantum inverse scattering method adapted to a multi-site generalization of the Yang-Baxter equation as introduced by E. Rowell and Z. Wang. The $R$-matrix is constructed using generators of extraspecial 2-groups. This helps us extract all the conserved charges and lay the framework for a general mechanism to generate such multi-site interaction spin systems that are transverse field Ising models under the hood. A remark on how to obtain P. Fendley's free-fermion in disguise models in this formalism is also included.

The Yang–Baxter integrability of the critical Ising chain

Akash Sinha, T. Clark Justin, Pramod Padmanabhan +1 more

Abstract We demonstrate that the one-dimensional critical transverse field Ising model (TFIM) is Yang–Baxter integrable. This is achieved by constructing commuting transfer matrices derived from an R-matrix that satisfies the Yang–Baxter equation with additive spectral parameters. The R-matrix is nonlocal because it is expressed in terms of Majorana fermions. It is also non-regular. Nevertheless, we show that the quantum inverse scattering method can still be suitably adapted. Using the boost operator method, we recursively obtain the conserved quantities in the infinite volume. Among the conserved charges, we identify the Kramers–Wannier duality and other non-invertible symmetries for the periodic TFIM.

Free fermions in disguise

Paul Fendley

Abstract I solve a quantum chain whose Hamiltonian is comprised solely of local four-fermi operators by constructing free-fermion raising and lowering operators. The free-fermion operators are both non-local and highly non-linear in the local fermions. This construction yields the complete spectrum of the Hamiltonian and an associated classical transfer matrix. The spatially uniform system is gapless with dynamical critical exponent z = 3/2, while staggering the couplings gives a more conventional free-fermion model with an Ising transition. The Hamiltonian is equivalent to that of a spin-1/2 chain with next-nearest-neighbour interactions, and has a supersymmetry generated by a sum of fermion trilinears. The supercharges are part of a large non-abelian symmetry algebra that results in exponentially large degeneracies. The model is integrable for either open or periodic boundary conditions but the free-fermion construction only works for the former, while for the latter the extended symmetry is broken and the degeneracies split.

Anisotropic ising model on 2D Kagomé lattice as an inhomogeneous XYZ integrable model

Shahane A. Khachatryan, Hrachia Babujian, A. Sedrakyan

We investigate a generalized inhomogeneous two-dimensional Ising model on the kagomé lattice with two alternating couplings J i and J i ′ , i = 1 , 2 , 3 , along the three lattice directions. The local Boltzmann weights are mapped onto a non-symmetric eight-vertex R -matrix satisfying the free-fermion condition for arbitrary values of the six couplings. We analyze the Yang–Baxter structure for the cases J i ′ = J i and J i ′ = − J i and derive the corresponding one-dimensional quantum spin chains in the anisotropic limit. The first case yields a transverse-field Ising-type Hamiltonian, while the second leads to a modified chain with a graded permutation structure and shifted partition-function zeros. For a partially anisotropic model, we also obtain the free energy and specific heat.

Bootstrapping Fermionic $R$-operators with Decorated Yang--Baxter Equations

Zhao Zhang

Integrating infinitesimal generators of local dynamics into finite-time evolution is generally harder than extracting a local Hamiltonian from a quantum gate. For integrable one-dimensional quantum many-body systems, a recent bootstrap constructs one-parameter $R$-operators directly from Hamiltonians satisfying the Reshetikhin condition. However, this condition excludes important models such as the Hubbard model, whose two-parameter $R$-operator was obtained by Shastry from a decorated Yang--Baxter equation obeyed by its free-fermion sector. Here, I extend the bootstrap to $R$-operators constrained by both the ordinary and decorated Yang--Baxter equations. Their joint expansion produces additional Hamiltonian-level necessary conditions and recursively determines candidate higher-order terms, subject to two-site locality at each order. I also derive compatibility and factorization conditions under which a Shastry-type superposition solves the $RLL$ relation after deformation by an onsite involution. The construction recovers the known two-parameter $R$-operators of the Hubbard and XYh models, whose full Yang--Baxter equations follow from established tetrahedral Zamolodchikov algebra relations. For a superconducting Hubbard deformation, the scalar equations are generically incompatible, placing it outside this framework. These results provide diagnostics and a systematic route to fermionic $R$-operators beyond the Reshetikhin condition. General sufficiency, convergence of the formal bootstrap, and sufficiency of the deformation conditions remain open.

Exceptional points in the Baxter-Fendley free parafermion model

Robert A. Henry, Murray T. Batchelor

Certain spin chains, such as the quantum Ising chain, have free fermion spectra which can be expressed as the sum of decoupled two-level fermionic systems. Free parafermions are a generalisation of this idea to \mathbb{Z}_N ℤ N -symmetric clock models. In 1989 Baxter discovered a non-Hermitian but \mathcal{PT} 𝒫 𝒯 -symmetric model directly generalising the Ising chain, which was later described by Fendley as a free parafermion spectrum. By extending the model’s magnetic field parameter to the complex plane, it is shown that a series of exceptional points emerges, where the quasienergies defining the free spectrum become degenerate. An analytic expression for the locations of these points is derived, and various numerical investigations are performed. These exceptional points also exist in the Ising chain with a complex transverse field. Although the model is not in general \mathcal{PT} 𝒫 𝒯 -symmetric at these exceptional points, their proximity can have a profound impact on the model on the \mathcal{PT} 𝒫 𝒯 -symmetric real line. Furthermore, in certain cases an exceptional point may appear on the real line (with negative field).

A Simple Necessary and Sufficient Condition for Yang--Baxter Integrability

Mizuki Sanatani, Naoto Shiraishi, Fuga Ishii

Quantum integrability is a cornerstone of the exact theory of interacting quantum spin chains. In its standard formulation, however, one starts from R-matrices satisfying the Yang--Baxter equation, rather than from the Hamiltonian itself. It has therefore remained unclear how Yang--Baxter solvability can be characterized directly at the Hamiltonian level, and how it is related to the existence of local conservation laws. Here we prove that, in a broad standard setting, the Reshetikhin condition is not only necessary but also sufficient for Yang--Baxter integrability, thereby reducing the hidden algebraic structure of integrability to a Hamiltonian-level conservation law. Since the Reshetikhin condition is equivalent to conservation of the total energy current, this Hamiltonian-level criterion is also experimentally accessible. This result establishes a quantum counterpart of the Liouville--Arnold theorem for isotropic spin chains, stating that Yang--Baxter solvability is equivalent to an infinite hierarchy of local conserved quantities. Our result also simplifies substantially the search for integrable spin chains by replacing the search for R-matrices with a direct criterion on local Hamiltonians.
