Abstract

We investigate the indistinguishability of Raman photons generated from two trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions using few-nanosecond excitation pulses. We elucidate how spontaneous scattering back to the initial state affects Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. We identify the mean number of back-decays as a measurable single-emitter quantity that correlates with achievable interference visibility of photons from two identical emitters.

Indistinguishability of single Raman photons from single atoms

Pascal Baumgart, Max Bergerhoff, Jürgen Eschner

We theoretically investigate the indistinguishability of single photons generated from single trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions in a Raman scattering process driven by few-nanosecond excitation pulses. Of particular interest is how spontaneous decay back to the initial state affects Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) photon interference. Numerical simulations identify the mean number of back-decays as a measurable quantity that correlates with achievable HOM visibility. Optimization of the excitation pulse with respect to a trade-off between photon yield and indistinguishability is analyzed. Finally, we compare the performance of different trapped-ion species for long-range dual-rail entanglement swapping via HOM photon interference.

Improving the indistinguishability of single photons from an ion-cavity system

Thomas Walker, Samir Vartabi Kashanian, Travers Ward +1 more

We investigate two schemes for generating indistinguishable single photons, a key feature of quantum networks, from a trapped ion coupled to an optical cavity. Through selection of the initial state in a cavity-assisted Raman transition, we suppress the detrimental effects of spontaneous emission on the photon's coherence length, measuring a visibility of $81(2)%$ without subtraction of background counts in a Hong-Ou-Mandel interference measurement, the highest reported for an ion-cavity system. In comparison, a visibility of 50(2)% was measured using a more conventional single-photon scheme. We demonstrate through numerical analysis of the single-photon generation process that our scheme produces photons of a given indistinguishability with a greater efficiency than the conventional one. Single-photon schemes such as the one demonstrated here have applications in distributed quantum computing and communications, which rely on high-fidelity entanglement swapping and state transfer through indistinguishable single photons.

We demonstrate Hong-Ou-Mandel interference of 854-nm photons emitted by and entangled with two co-trapped 40Ca+ ions, excited by nanosecond 393-nm laser pulses. We present evidence for atom-atom entanglement following a photonic Bell state measurement.

Indistinguishable single photons generated by a quantum dot under resonant excitation observable without postselection

Léonard Monniello, Antoine Reigue, Richard Hostein +4 more

We report on two-photon interference of highly indistinguishable single photons emitted by a quantum dot. Strictly resonant excitation with picosecond laser pulses has been used to prepare coherent states with a significantly increased coherence time $({T}_{2}\ensuremath{\sim}1\text{ns})$ and reduced lifetime $({T}_{1}\ensuremath{\sim}650\text{ps})$, as compared to a nonresonant excitation scheme. Indistinguishable photons, with visibilities greater than 70%, have been observed by measuring the Hong-Ou-Mandel dip without postselection of the interfering photons. Near-unity indistinguishable photons should be achievable by preventing fluctuations in the electrostatic environment in the vicinity of the dots, considered as an important source of decoherence.

Indistinguishable Tunable Single Photons Emitted by Spin-Flip Raman Transitions in InGaAs Quantum Dots

Yu He, Yu-Ming He, Y.-J. Wei +9 more

This Letter reports all-optically tunable and highly indistinguishable single Raman photons from a driven single quantum dot spin. The frequency, linewidth, and lifetime of the Raman photons are tunable by varying the driving field power and detuning. Under continuous-wave excitation, subnatural linewidth single photons from off-resonant Raman scattering show an indistinguishability of 0.98(3). Under π pulse excitation, spin- and time-tagged Raman fluorescence photons show an almost vanishing multiphoton emission probability of 0.01(2) and a two-photon quantum interference visibility of 0.95(3). Lastly, Hong-Ou-Mandel interference is demonstrated between two single photons emitted from remote, independent quantum dots with an unprecedented visibility of 0.87(4).

Single Atom – Single Photon Interfaces

Felix Rohde, Carsten Schuck, Markus Hennrich +7 more

In an experimental system of two distant ion traps we trap simultaneously strings of Ca+ ions and observe Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between their scattered photons. We also generate entangled photon pairs whose frequency and bandwidth are matched to an absorption line in the ions, and work towards heralded single photon – single ion interaction.
