Abstract

Quantum networks rely on the efficient distribution of entanglement to enable long-distance quantum communication and information processing. A key challenge in these networks is the design of routing protocols capable of maintaining high quality entanglement in the presence of noise, decoherence, and imperfect operations, which progressively degrade the fidelity of entangled states through entanglement swapping. Entanglement purification provides an effective mechanism to mitigate this degradation at the cost of additional resources. In this work, we study purification-aware quantum routing and formulate the problem of selecting optimal purification strategies as an optimization task. By employing dynamic programming techniques, we identify strategies that optimally balance resource consumption and end-to-end fidelity, demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach across different scenarios.

From Entanglement Purification Scheduling to Fidelity-Constrained Entanglement Routing

Ziyue Jia, Lin Chen

Recently emerged as a disruptive networking paradigm, quantum networks rely on the mysterious quantum entanglement to teleport qubits without physically transferring quantum particles. However, the state of quantum systems is extremely fragile due to environment noise. A promising technique to combat against quantum decoherence is entanglement purification. To fully exploit its benefit, two fundamental research questions need to be answered: (1) given an entanglement path, what is the optimal entanglement purification schedule? (2) how to compute min-cost end-to-end entanglement paths subject to fidelity constraint? In this paper, we give algorithmic solutions to both questions. For the first question, we develop an optimal entanglement purification scheduling algorithm for the singlehop case and analyze the PURIFY-AND-SWAP strategy in the multi-hop case by establishing the closed-form condition for its optimality. For the second question, we design a polynomialtime algorithm constructing an$\epsilon$-optimal fidelity-constrained path. The effectiveness of our algorithms are also numerically demonstrated by extensive simulations.

On Optimum Entanglement Purification Scheduling in Quantum Networks

Lin Chen, Ziyue Jia

Entanglement purification is a fundamental operation to combat against quantum decoherence and improve the fidelity of the entanglement. When multiple rounds of entanglement purification are performed, the fidelity of the final entanglement depends on the way how we schedule entanglement purification operations at each round. In this paper, we formulate and analyze the optimal entanglement purification scheduling problem arising from this context. Our main results include an optimal link-level purification scheduling algorithm and a joint entanglement purification scheduling and routing algorithm to establish fidelity-guaranteed end-to-end entanglements with quasi-optimal throughput in quantum networks. Our algorithmic framework developed in this paper can serve as functional building blocks for entanglement provisioning to support high-fidelity quantum information transfer by exploiting the limited quantum resources in a cost-effective way in order to fully realize the unrivalled capabilities offered by quantum networks.

SFTRAP: Satisfying Fidelity Threshold Routing and Adaptive Purification for Throughput Maximum in Quantum Network

Zhi Wang, Tao Gong, Yingpu Nian +6 more

The core function of quantum networks is to establish high-fidelity quantum entanglement for long-distance communication. However, the main challenge is to efficiently allocate resources under limited conditions, maximize throughput, satisfy end-to-end (E2E) fidelity requirements, and prevent quantum decoherence caused by inefficient routing algorithms. Current research focuses on optimizing either throughput or fidelity, with a lack of approaches that optimize both simultaneously; furthermore, existing algorithms suffer from high computational complexity. To tackle these challenges, this study proposes a Satisfying Fidelity Threshold Routing and Adaptive Purification Strategy (SFTRAP). SFTRAP maximizes throughput for each request by selecting multiple paths and dynamically choosing links for entanglement purification based on the current state of link resources, thus minimizing throughput loss while satisfying fidelity threshold. The strategy also adaptively adjusts the number of purification rounds according to the fidelity threshold, thereby optimizing the time required for deep purification and enhancing algorithmic efficiency. For multi-request scenarios, SFTRAP employs a priority sorting mechanism that takes into account both path cost and path freedom, which refines request scheduling and path selection to create more efficient request combinations, thus further boosting the overall network throughput. Simulation results indicate that SFTRAP surpasses state-of-the-art methods in terms of both throughput and algorithmic efficiency, highlighting its potential for optimizing resources in quantum networks.

Distribution and Purification of Entanglement States in Quantum Networks

Xiaojie Fan, Yukun Yang, Himanshu Gupta +1 more

We consider problems of distributing high-fidelity entangled states across nodes of a quantum network. We consider a repeater-based network architecture with entanglement swapping (fusion) operations for generating long-distance entanglements, and purification operations that produce high-fidelity states from several lower-fidelity states. The contributions of this paper are two-fold: First, while there have been several works on fidelity-aware routing and incorporating purification into routing for generating EPs, this paper presents the first algorithms for optimal solutions to the high-fidelity EP distribution problem. We provide a dynamic programming algorithm for generating the optimal tree of operations to produce a high-fidelity EP, and an LP-based algorithm for generating an optimal collection of trees. Second, following the EP algorithms, this paper presents the first algorithms for the high-fidelity GHZ-state distribution problem and characterizes its optimality. We evaluate our techniques via simulations over NetSquid, a quantum network simulator.

High-fidelity Entanglement Distribution method for Quantum Communication Network

Xin Han Sun, Tianzhu Hu, Haomin Chen +2 more

Quantum communication technology provides an absolute security guarantee for information transmitted between quantum applications. To establish practical quantum networks, providing entangled pairs of stable quality, suitable for varying distances, is crucial. However, due to the inherent losses and imperfections of the operations during the entanglement distribution process, the fidelity of end-to-end entangled pairs will be greatly reduced. Consequently, establishing fidelity-guaranteed entangled pairs will be challenging. In this work, we introduce an entanglement distribution method that ensures the fidelity requirements of applications across different distances, while maintaining high efficiency. The method first decomposes the end-to-end fidelity requirements to target fidelity for purification at each link, based on the worst-case consumption. Then it performs multiple-round symmetrical entanglement purification based on the backup scheme to purify each entangled pair to the target value. The experimental results indicate that the scheme has acceptable performance in resource consumption and great feasibility while ensuring high efficiency.

An Adaptive Purification Controller for Quantum Networks: Dynamic Protocol Selection and Multipartite Distillation

Pranav Kulkarni, Leo Sünkel, Michael Kölle

Efficient entanglement distribution is a cornerstone of the Quantum Internet. However, physical link parameters such as photon loss, memory coherence time, and gate error rates fluctuate dynamically, rendering static purification strategies suboptimal. In this paper, we propose an Adaptive Purification Controller (APC) that automatically optimizes the entanglement distillation sequence to maximize the goodput, i.e., the rate of delivered pairs meeting a strict fidelity threshold. By treating protocol selection as a resource allocation problem, the APC dynamically switches between purification depths and protocols (BBPSSW vs. DEJMPS) to navigate the trade-off between generation rate and state quality. Using a dynamic programming planner with Pareto pruning, simulation results show that our approach mitigates the "fidelity cliffs" inherent in static protocols and reduces resource wastage in high-noise regimes. Furthermore, we extend the controller to heterogeneous scenarios, and evaluate it for both multipartite GHZ state generation and continuous-variable systems using effective noiseless linear amplification models. We benchmark its computational overhead, showing decision latencies in the millisecond range per link in our implementation.
