Abstract

We investigate the transport properties of a superfluid Fermi gas confined in a ring trap with a moving potential barrier across the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) crossover. Employing time-dependent Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) equations, we simulate the dynamics of a Josephson junction biased by both DC and AC currents. Over a wide range of interaction strengths, the barrier-velocity dependence of the chemical potential difference exhibits low-order plateau structures, consistent with Shapiro steps, with fitted levels close to integer multiples of $\hbarω/2$ within the phase-coherent regime. This factor of $1/2$ reflects our convention of defining the chemical potential per single fermion in the BdG framework. Microscopic analysis reveals that these fundamental steps originate from synchronized phase slips mediated by periodic soliton generation at the barrier. Our findings clarify the role of interaction regimes in the nonequilibrium phase dynamics of ring-trapped fermionic superfluids and provide microscopic insights relevant to future studies of atomtronic systems with nontrivial topology.

Dynamics of Dark Solitons in a Trapped Superfluid Fermi Gas

R. G. Scott, F. Dalfovo, Лев П. Питаевский +1 more

We study soliton oscillations in a trapped superfluid Fermi gas across the Bose-Einstein condensate to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BEC-BCS) crossover. We derive an exact equation for the oscillation period in terms of observable quantities, which we confirm by solving the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. Hence we reveal the appearance and dynamics of solitons across the crossover, and show that the period dramatically increases as the soliton becomes shallower on the BCS side of the resonance. Finally, we propose an experimental protocol to test our predictions.

Bogoliubov excitations of trapped superfluid Fermi gases in a BCS-BEC crossover beyond the Thomas-Fermi limit

Yong-li Ma, Guoxiang Huang

We study the Bogoliubov collective excitations of harmonically trapped superfluid Fermi gases in the crossover from Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) beyond Thomas-Fermi (TF) limit. Starting from a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation and an equation of state valid for the whole crossover, we derive Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) equations for low-lying collective modes at zero temperature. We use a Fetter-like variational ground state wave function to remove the noncontinuity of slope at the boundary of condensate, which appears in the TF limit. We solve the BdG equations analytically and obtain explicit expressions for all eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, valid for various crossover regimes and for traps with spherical and axial symmetries. We discuss the feature of these collective excitations in the BCS-BEC crossover and show that the theoretical result obtained agrees with available experimental data near and beyond the TF limit.

Gray solitons in a strongly interacting superfluid Fermi gas

Andrea Spuntarelli, Lincoln D. Carr, P. Pieri +1 more

The Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) crossover problem is solved for stationary gray solitons via the Boguliubov–de Gennes equations at zero temperature. These crossover solitons exhibit a localized notch in the gap and a characteristic phase difference across the notch for all interaction strengths, from BEC to BCS regimes. However, they do not follow the well-known Josephson-like sinusoidal relationship between velocity and phase difference except in the far BEC limit: at unitarity, the velocity has a nearly linear dependence on phase difference over an extended range. For a fixed phase difference, the soliton is of nearly constant depth from the BEC limit to unitarity and then grows progressively shallower into the BCS limit, and on the BCS side, Friedel oscillations are apparent in both gap amplitude and phase. The crossover soliton appears fundamentally in the gap; we show, however, that the density closely follows the gap, and the soliton is therefore observable. We develop an approximate power-law relationship to express this fact: the density of gray crossover solitons varies as the square of the gap amplitude in the BEC limit and as a power of about 1.5 at unitarity.

Josephson effects in an interaction-asymmetric junction across the BCS-BEC crossover

Anonymous, Hiroyuki Tajima

We theoretically study the Josephson effect in ultracold Fermi gases, where the two sides of the Josephson junction are independently tuned to different regions of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)-Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover. Using the nonequilibrium Green's function approach combined with the tunnel Hamiltonian formalism and a mean-field approach, we evaluate the DC and AC Josephson currents throughout the entire crossover region. We calculate the DC Josephson current as a function of interaction strength by tuning both sides of the junction synchronously from the BCS to the BEC regimes, and give the asymptotic expression of the current in the deep BCS and BEC limits. We also study the AC Josephson junction through the interaction-asymmetric junction by fixing the interaction in one reservoir and tuning that of the other one. A peak of the tunneling current is found when one side is fixed in the BCS limit and the other side is tuned into the BEC regime, which corresponds to the interaction-biased Riedel peak. Our results indicate the competition between contributions of increasing pair spectral weight and decreasing chemical potential to Josephson tunneling throughout the BCS-BEC crossover, and demonstrate the realization of the Riedel peak in strong-coupling quantum gases.

Tunneling and Self-Trapping of Superfluid Fermi Gases in BCS-BEC Crossover

Yu Long Zhou, Ying Wang, Wenchen Luo +1 more

We investigate tunneling and self-trapping of superfluid Fermi gases under a two-mode ansatz in different regimes of the crossover from Bardeen—Cooper—Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to Bose—Einstein condensates (BEC). Starting from a generalized equation of state, we derive the coupled equations of relative atom-pair number and relative phase about superfluid Fermi gases in a double-well system and then classify the different oscillation behaviors by the tunneling strength and interactions between atoms. Tunneling and self-trapping behaviors are considered in the whole BCS-BEC crossover in the case of a symmetric double-well potential. We show that the nonlinear interaction between atoms makes the self-trapping more easily realized in BCS regime than in the BEC regime and stability analysis is also given.

Collective modes of low-dimensional superfluid Fermi gases in the BCS-BEC crossover: Time-dependent variational analysis

Yu Long Zhou, Guoxiang Huang

We investigate collective modes and free expansions of quasi-one- and quasi-two-dimensional (Q1D and Q2D) ultracold Fermi gases in the crossover from a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We solve a superfluid order parameter equation valid for the BCS-BEC crossover by employing a time-dependent variational method. We take a trial wave function of hybrid Gaussian-parabolic type, which not only reflects the low-dimensional character of the system but also allows an essentially analytical approach for the problem. We present Q1D and Q2D criteria that are valid in various superfluid regimes and show clearly the relation between the maximum condensed particle number and the parameters of the trapping potential as well as the atom-atom interaction. We demonstrate that, due to the small particle number in Q1D and Q2D condensates, the contribution to oscillating frequencies of collective modes by the quantum pressure in the strong-confinement direction is significant and hence the Thomas-Fermi approximation cannot be used. We also show that the free expansion of Q1D and Q2D superfluid Fermi gases in the strong-confinement direction is much faster than that in the weak-confinement direction.
