Abstract

We investigate realizations of (1+1)-dimensional fusion category symmetries on tensor-product Hilbert spaces, allowing for mixing with quantum cellular automata (QCAs). It was argued recently that any such realizable symmetry must be weakly integral. We develop a systematic analysis of QCA-refined realizations of fusion categories and prove two statements. First, we show that, under certain physical assumptions on defects, any QCA-refined realization has QCA and symmetry-operator indices determined by the categorical data, up to the freedom of redefining the symmetry operators. Second, we construct a lattice model that provides a QCA-refined realization for any weakly integral fusion category symmetry on a tensor product Hilbert space. We also compute indices of the QCAs in our lattice model and show agreement with the first result. As an application of the general construction, we give an explicit QCA-refined realization of general Tambara-Yamagami categorical symmetries.

Remarks on non-invertible symmetries on a tensor product Hilbert space in 1+1 dimensions

Kansei Inamura

We propose an index of non-invertible symmetry operators in 1+1 dimensions and discuss its relation to the realizability of non-invertible symmetries on the tensor product of finite dimensional on-site Hilbert spaces on the lattice. Our index generalizes the Gross-Nesme-Vogts-Werner index of invertible symmetry operators represented by quantum cellular automata (QCAs). Assuming that all fusion channels of symmetry operators have the same index, we show that the fusion rules of finitely many symmetry operators on a tensor product Hilbert space can agree, up to QCAs, only with those of weakly integral fusion categories. We also discuss an attempt to establish an index theory for non-invertible symmetries within the framework of tensor networks. To this end, we first propose a general class of matrix product operators (MPOs) that describe non-invertible symmetries on a tensor product Hilbert space. These MPOs, which we refer to as topological injective MPOs, include all invertible symmetries, non-anomalous fusion category symmetries, and the Kramers-Wannier symmetries for finite abelian groups. For topological injective MPOs, we construct the defect Hilbert spaces and the corresponding sequential quantum circuit representations. We also show that all fusion channels of topological injective MPOs have the same index if there exist fusion and splitting tensors that satisfy appropriate conditions. The existence of such fusion and splitting tensors has not been proven in general, although we construct them explicitly for all examples of topological injective MPOs listed above.

Non-Invertible Symmetries Mixing with Witt Non-Trivial Quantum Cellular Automata

Kansei Inamura, Oskar Wojdel, Lukasz Fidkowski +1 more

Self-dualities and the stacking of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are basic operations on quantum many-body systems. For a $\mathbb{Z}_p$ one-form symmetry in 3+1d these correspond to the Kramers-Wannier-Wegner duality $S$, which is the gauging operation underlying non-invertible duality symmetries, and the stacking of a 1-form symmetry SPT $T$. In the continuum, they form a central extension of $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z}_4)$ for $p=2$, and of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z}_p)$ for odd primes $p$, whose central elements are invertible theories with purely gravitational response. These central extensions are governed by a twisted, graded generalization of the Witt group of abelian anyon theories, which we determine. For $p=2$ the resulting group is the single-qubit Clifford group, with duality and entangler acting as the Hadamard and phase gates. We realize this entire structure microscopically as quantum cellular automata (QCA) acting on a certain local operator algebra associated with a spin lattice Hilbert space on a cubic lattice. Specifically, our local operator algebra is built by starting with all local operators commuting with a $\mathbb{Z}_p$ 1-form symmetry, and taking the quotient by all the (local) 1-form symmetry generators. The central elements can always be extended to the full tensor product algebra with a uniquely defined QCA class. For $p=2$ they are generated by the non-trivial semion QCA, and for odd prime $p$ they are generated by the non-trivial $\mathbb{Z}_p$ Clifford QCA. Consequently the lattice fusion rules reproduce the continuum ones only up to these QCAs and lattice translations, giving rise to fusion rules refined by QCAs.

On the structure of categorical duality operators

Corey Jones, Xinping Yang

We systematically study categorical duality operators on spin (and anyon) chains with respect to an internal fusion category symmetry C. We parameterize duality operators on the quasi-local algebra in terms of data dependent on the associated quantum cellular automata (QCA) on the symmetric subalgebra $B$. In particular, a QCA $α$ on $B$ defines an invertible C-C bimodule category $M_α$, and the duality operators extending $α$ form a simplex, with extreme points in bijective correspondence with the simple object of $M_α$. Then we consider the structure of external symmetries generated by a family of duality operators, and show that if the UV models are all defined on tensor product Hilbert spaces, these categories necessarily flow to weakly integral fusion categories in the IR.

Quantum Cellular Automata from Kramers-Wannier Dualities and Modular Relations

Carolyn Zhang, Po-Shen Hsin

Recent work has constructed higher-dimensional analogs of non-invertible symmetries similar to 1+1d Kramers-Wannier duality. Although their continuum descriptions often treat purely gravitational topological terms as inessential counterterms, these terms can have an essential lattice manifestation: they distinguish states prepared by finite-depth quantum circuits (FDQCs) from those entangled by nontrivial quantum cellular automata (QCAs). Motivated by this mismatch, we show that QCAs associated with gravitational topological responses arise in several related settings: (1) lattice realizations of projective $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z}_N)$ relations generated by topological operations on symmetries; (2) squares of dualities that generalize the relation between fermionization and Kramers-Wannier duality; (3) lattice implementations of QCAs through higher-form gauging; and (4) invertible phases protected by generalized time-reversal symmetries. We derive new projective $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z}_N)$ relations whose projective phases are gravitational topological responses constructed from Stiefel-Whitney classes. We furthermore give a general protocol for preparing the associated QCA-entangled states using finite-depth unitary circuits, measurements, and error correction. These results unify the study of gravitational topological responses in field theories, higher dimensional dualities, and quantum cellular automata.

Non-Clifford quantum cellular automata from invertible topological quantum field theories

Meng Sun, Zongyuan Wang, Bowen Yang +2 more

Quantum cellular automata (QCAs) describe locality-preserving quantum dynamics and link quantum information, many-body physics, and topological quantum field theory (TQFT). Constructing a QCA from a TQFT, however, remains challenging: although a topological action yields a Hamiltonian with commuting terms that realizes the desired ground state, it does not by itself specify an automorphism of the full operator algebra. We develop a unified algebraic construction that extends such Hamiltonians to complete separator-flipper algebras on the full tensor-product Hilbert space, thereby defining the corresponding QCAs microscopically. In 3 spatial dimensions, our framework unifies all previously known QCA constructions associated with the $\mathbb{Z}_8\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ subgroup of the Witt group, including the $U(1)_2$ and $U(1)_4$ QCAs. The same algebraic structure yields new infinite families of generalized $U(1)_2$ and $U(1)_4$ non-Clifford QCAs in spatial dimensions $d=4k-1$. We also reformulate the 4-dimensional $w_2w_3$ QCA and use it to construct QCAs from TQFTs associated with arbitrary products of Stiefel--Whitney classes. For example, we explicitly construct two infinite families: $w_2^nw_3^m$ QCAs in dimension $d=2n+3m-1$ and $w_2w_{4k-1}$ QCAs in dimension $d=4k$. For the 5-dimensional $w_3^2$ and $w_2^3$ QCAs, our construction gives finite-depth quantum circuits, consistent with the cobordism classification. More generally, we show that our construction yields a finite-depth quantum circuit whenever the corresponding Stiefel-Whitney number vanishes on every closed oriented manifold. Overall, these results convert invertible TQFTs into microscopic QCAs, provide higher-dimensional constructions beyond the Clifford setting, and open a systematic route to characterizing their stable structures and boundary anomalies.

Non-invertible symmetries and LSM-type constraints on a tensor product Hilbert space

Nathan Seiberg B, Sahand Seifnashri, Shu-Heng Shao

We discuss the exact non-invertible Kramers-Wannier symmetry of 1+1d lattice models on a tensor product Hilbert space of qubits. This symmetry is associated with a topological defect and a conserved operator, and the latter can be presented as a matrix product operator. Importantly, unlike its continuum counterpart, the symmetry algebra involves lattice translations. Consequently, it is not described by a fusion category. In the presence of this defect, the symmetry algebra involving parity/time-reversal is realized projectively, which is reminiscent of an anomaly. Different Hamiltonians with the same lattice non-invertible symmetry can flow in their continuum limits to infinitely many different fusion categories (with different Frobenius-Schur indicators), including, as a special case, the Ising CFT. The non-invertible symmetry leads to a constraint similar to that of Lieb-Schultz-Mattis, implying that the system cannot have a unique gapped ground state. It is either in a gapless phase or in a gapped phase with three (or a multiple of three) ground states, associated with the spontaneous breaking of the lattice non-invertible symmetry.
