Abstract

Top and anti-top quark pair production at LHC provides a unique setting to probe non-classical correlations at the TeV scale. We study quantum information (QI) properties of the $t\bar{t}$ spin state in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), focusing on dimension-6 operators that induce anomalous chromo- and weak dipole moments of the top quark within their current experimental bounds. The $t\bar{t}$ spin density matrix is reconstructed from the joint angular distribution of the final state charged leptons in the $k$-$r$-$n$ helicity basis. We analyze three complementary QI quantities: concurrence-based quantum entanglement (QE), geometric quantum discord (GQD), and the Bell parameter, across four $t\bar{t}$ invariant-mass bins. Within the Standard Model (SM), non-vanishing QE appears only near threshold ($m_{t\bar{t}}\lesssim 400$ GeV), while GQD remains nonzero across the full phase space, indicating persistent non-classical correlations even for separable states. Anomalous chromo-dipole interactions modify these observables primarily near threshold: $\hatμ_t$ induces asymmetric shifts, whereas $\hat{d}_t$ produces a mild symmetric response without Bell inequality violation. Among weak dipole operators, the CP-even coupling $C_2^V$ generates the largest deformation of the QI observables, while $ΔC_1^{A,V}$ leave them unchanged. These results demonstrate that QI observables derived from the $t\bar{t}$ spin density matrix provide a complementary probe of anomalous top-quark interactions with distinct sensitivity to CP-even and CP-odd operator structures.

Quantum detection of CP violation in the $t\bar{t}$ system: production

Priyanka Lamba, Fabio Maltoni, Olimpia Miniati +1 more

We investigate how possible new CP-violating top-quark interactions are encoded in the quantum state of a produced $t\bar t$ pair. We derive analytic expressions for the production density matrix in several benchmark channels relevant to hadron, lepton and photon colliders. In a common spin basis, we identify two characteristic CP-odd structures in the Fano--Bloch decomposition: a difference between the top and antitop polarisation vectors and an antisymmetric component of the spin-correlation matrix. We construct observables that directly probe these structures and study how quantum information measures, including discord, concurrence, magic and trace distance, respond to CP-even and CP-odd SMEFT contributions. Finally, using current measurements and future collider projections, we assess the sensitivity of these observables to possible new sources of CP violation in top-quark production. This establishes the production-level framework whose experimental reconstruction is developed in a companion paper.

Experimental probe of quantum coherence in top-quark pair production at the LHC

Saeed Haddadi, Majid Azizi, Artur Czerwinski +1 more

We investigate quantum coherence in the spin degrees of freedom of top--antitop pairs produced at the LHC using the $l_1$-norm of coherence in the helicity basis. Combining Standard Model predictions with the spin density matrix reconstructed from the CMS measurement of top-quark spin correlation coefficients, we study the dependence of coherence on the invariant mass $M_{t\bar t}$ and production angle. To quantify the experimental precision of the extracted coherence, we propagate the measured uncertainties and covariance matrix of the spin-correlation coefficients through a Monte Carlo procedure. We find a non-monotonic kinematic dependence: coherence is large near the production threshold, is reduced in the intermediate-mass region, and increases again in boosted central events. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the CMS determinations in all three kinematic regions. Moreover, the experimentally reconstructed coherence is nonzero with a significance exceeding $5σ$ in each region. In particular, in the intermediate-mass region, $400<M_{t\bar t}<600~\mathrm{GeV}$, we obtain $C_{l_1}=0.597\pm0.037$. This result is especially noteworthy because previous analyses of the same reconstructed top-quark spin density matrix found concurrence and negativity, both entanglement measures, to be consistent with zero, $0.00\pm0.02$, in this kinematic region. The persistence of sizable coherence where entanglement is not experimentally certified demonstrates that coherence provides complementary information on the off-diagonal helicity-interference structure of the top-quark spin density matrix. Our results establish quantum coherence as an experimentally accessible and statistically robust observable for probing the quantum structure of top-quark pair production at the LHC.

Measurements of top quark properties in CMS: $t\bar{t}$ spin density matrix, quantum entanglement and quantum magic

E. Yazgan

Polarization and spin correlation measurements of top quark-antiquark ($t\bar{t}$) pairs provide tests of the standard model, but also new ways to test quantum mechanics with unstable particles at highest energies ever produced in a laboratory. Recent $t\bar{t}$ spin correlation measurements and the tests they enable, made with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC Run 2, are presented. The measurements summarized include the full spin density matrix measurement of top quark pairs using events with a single lepton and jets in the final state. Spin correlation measurements in specific phase space regions allow the observation of the entanglement phenomenon, and the measurement of quantum magic. From the measured spin correlation at the $t\bar{t}$ production threshold and high $t\bar{t}$ mass, entanglement is observed with a large fraction of the $t\bar{t}$ decays being spacelike separated. The observation of entanglement in $t\bar{t}$ events with two high transverse momentum leptons of opposite charge is also presented. Finally, the first TeV-scale experimental measurement of quantum magic, an important variable for the characterization of quantum states in quantum information science, is presented. These measurements provide one of the first connections between quantum information science and particle physics, and show the potential of collider experiments in the studies of the foundations of quantum mechanics.

Observation of quantum entanglement in top quark pair production in proton–proton collisions at √=13 TeV

Aram Hayrapetyan, G. G. Da Silveira, C. A. Bernardes +1 more

Entanglement is an intrinsic property of quantum mechanics and is predicted to be exhibited in the particles produced at the Large Hadron Collider. A measurement of the extent of entanglement in top quark-antiquark (t¯t) events produced in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is performed with the data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb−1 . The events are selected based on the presence of two leptons with opposite charges and high transverse momentum. An entanglement-sensitive observable D is derived from the top quark spin-dependent parts of the t¯t production density matrix and measured in the region of the t¯t production threshold. Values of D < −1/3 are evidence of entanglement and D is observed (expected) to be −0.480+0.026 −0.029 (−0.467+0.026 −0.029) at the parton level. With an observed significance of 5.1 standard deviations with respect to the non-entangled hypothesis, this provides observation of quantum mechanical entanglement within t¯t pairs in this phase space. This measurement provides a new probe of quantum mechanics at the highest energies ever produced.

Non-Classicality in $tW$ system via negativity and geometric quantum discord

Amir Subba, Yu Shi

We perform a phenomenological study of non-classical correlations in the mixed-dimensional qubit-qutrit system realized by leading order $pp\to tW$ production at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV in the leptonic final state. The two missing neutrinos are reconstructed with conditional normalizing flows trained on simulated detector-level objects, and the joint spin density matrix $ρ_{tW}\in\mathcal{H}_2\otimes\mathcal{H}_3$ is obtained in a generalized Bloch representation from the angular distributions of the leptonic decay products. Non-classical correlations are quantified using the Peres--Horodecki negativity and geometric quantum discord. We quantify the correlations at different region of $m_{tW}$ at the reconstruction level within the Standard Model and the impact of two reducible backgrounds viz. $t\bar{t}$ and $WWj$ processes, tagged using boosted decision trees. We further study the behavior of correlations in presence of anomalous chromomagnetic and chromoelectric dipole moments of the top quark. The sensitivity reach of the quantum observables along with polarization and spin correlation parameters are reported for current LHC and future HL-LHC scenario.
