Direct Experimental Test of Conformal Invariance via Grazing Scattering: A Proposal for X-ray and Neutron Experiments

Abstract

We propose a test of conformal invariance in critical phenomena based on the study of a two-point correlation function in the presence of a boundary. This two-point function can be studied using X-ray or neutron scattering in the conditions of total reflection (so-called grazing scattering). The conformal Ward identity in momentum space is here expressed as a differential constraint on the scattering cross-section, as a function of the momentum transfer and the scattering angle. Experimental verification using X-rays and binary alloys appears well within the existing techniques, while feasibility for neutron scattering requires further study. This would be the first direct experimental test of conformal invariance in critical phenomena, a symmetry widely assumed but never directly verified.

Direct tests of conformal symmetry with Rydberg atoms: assessment and proposals

Junchen Rong, Slava Rychkov

We propose a direct test of conformal symmetry using Rydberg-atom arrays. By arranging the atoms on a circle and measuring equal-time two-point correlation functions, the characteristic functional form predicted by conformal field theory can be tested directly. We estimate the number of experimental snapshots required to resolve this behavior with sufficient statistical precision. We further optimize the time-dependent ramp profile of the Rabi frequency~$Ω$ and detuning~$Δ$ used to prepare the target critical state adiabatically. The optimized profile achieves higher fidelity over much shorter evolution times than those employed in previous experiments. Taken together, these results suggest that a direct experimental test of conformal symmetry is feasible with current Rydberg-atom technology.

Non-relativistic conformal field theory in momentum space

R. K. Gupta, Meenu

Abstract Non-relativistic conformal field theory describes many-body physics at unitarity. The correlation functions of the system are fixed by the requirement of the conformal invariance. In this article, we discuss the correlation functions of scalar operators in non-relativistic conformal field theories in momentum space. We discuss the solution of conformal Ward identities and express 2,3, and 4-point functions as a function of energy and momentum. We also express the 3- and 4-point functions as the one-loop and three-loop Feynman diagram computations in the momentum space. Lastly, we generalize the discussion to the momentum space correlation functions in the presence of a boundary.

Applied nonrelativistic conformal field theory: Scattering-length and effective-range corrections to rate of production of three neutrons at low relative momenta

Subham Dutta Chowdhury, Ruchira Mishra, Dam Thanh Son

Due to an accidentally large s -wave scattering length, in a relatively wide range of energy, neutrons are approximately described by the nonrelativistic conformal field theory of unitarity fermions, perturbed by one relevant and an infinite number of irrelevant operators. We develop a formalism which provides a nonperturbative definition of local operators in that nonrelativistic conformal field theory. We compute the scattering-length and effective-range corrections to the two-point functions of primary charge-three operators using the technique of conformal perturbation theory. These calculations allow us to find the first corrections to the scale-invariant behavior of the rate of nuclear reactions with three neutrons in the final state in the regime when the neutrons have small relative momenta. Conformal Invariance for Non-Relativistic Field Theory

Thomas Mehen, Iain W. Stewart, Mark B. Wise

Momentum space Ward identities are derived for the amputated n-point Green’s functions in 3 + 1 dimensional non-relativistic conformal field theory. For n = 4 and 6 the implications for scattering amplitudes (i.e. on-shell amputated Green’s functions) are considered. Any scale invariant 2-to-2 scattering amplitude is also conformally invariant. However, conformal invariance imposes constraints on off-shell Green’s functions and the three particle scattering amplitude which are not automatically satisfied if they are scale invariant. As an explicit example of a conformally invariant theory we consider non-relativistic particles in the infinite scattering length limit. 1 Poincaré invariant theories that are scale invariant usually have a larger symmetry group called the conformal group1. A similar phenomena happens for 3+1 dimensional nonrelativistic systems. These are invariant under the extended Galilean group, which consists of 10 generators: translations (4), rotations (3), and Galilean boosts (3). The largest space-time symmetry group of the free Schrödinger equation is called the Schrödinger or nonrelativistic

Particles, conformal invariance and criticality in pure and disordered systems

Gesualdo Delfino A

Abstract The two-dimensional case occupies a special position in the theory of critical phenomena due to the exact results provided by lattice solutions and, directly in the continuum, by the infinite-dimensional character of the conformal algebra. However, some sectors of the theory, and most notably criticality in systems with quenched disorder and short-range interactions, have appeared out of reach of exact methods and lacked the insight coming from analytical solutions. In this article, we review recent progress achieved implementing conformal invariance within the particle description of field theory. The formalism yields exact unitarity equations whose solutions classify critical points with a given symmetry. It provides new insight in the case of pure systems, as well as the first exact access to criticality in presence of short range quenched disorder. Analytical mechanisms emerge that in the random case allow the superuniversality of some critical exponents and make explicit the softening of first-order transitions by disorder. Graphic abstract

Off-diagonal density profiles and conformal invariance

Loïc Turban, Ferenc Iglói

Off-diagonal profiles of local densities (e.g. order parameter or energy density) are calculated at the bulk critical point, by conformal methods, on a strip with transverse coordinate v, for different types of boundary conditions (free, fixed and mixed). Such profiles, which are defined by the non-vanishing matrix element of the appropriate operator between the ground state and the corresponding lowest excited state of the strip Hamiltonian, enter into the expression of two-point correlation functions on a strip. They are of interest in the finite-size scaling study of bulk and surface critical behaviour since they allow the elimination of regular contributions. The conformal profiles, which are obtained through a conformal transformation of the correlation functions from the half-plane to the strip, are in agreement with the results of a direct calculation, for the energy density of the two-dimensional Ising model.
