Properties of tensorial free cumulants

Abstract

In the past two years, several points of view have been proposed to address the question of the generalization of the theory of free probability to random tensors with different invariances, and it is unclear at this point whether they lead to the same notions of tensorial free cumulants and freeness. One way to approach this problem, developed by Collins, Gurau and the second named author for local unitary invariant random tensors, relies on finite size quantities involving averages over the invariance group, and whose asymptotics naturally possess the properties expected for tensorial generalizations of free cumulants of arbitrary orders. At this point, this approach has only been carried out for certain distributions, and for a subset of the moments that define such theories, and a more systematic and exhaustive study is lacking. This is the program initiated in this paper: we link this approach to the one proposed by Nechita and Park; extend a number of their results as well as those of the aforementioned paper to arbitrary orders of fluctuations, thereby generalizing higher order free cumulants; push further the study of distributions with larger invariance groups; detail the link with the asymptotics of the free-energies of the tensor HCIZ and BGW integrals; and provide formulae for tensorial free cumulants of products of tensors. Another important question is that of the definition of concrete distributions whose tensorial free-cumulants take non-trivial values. We compute the tensorial free cumulants for Gaussian random tensors with non-trivial covariances, and show that they provide such examples.

Explicit non-free tensors

Maxim van den Berg, Matthias Christandl, Vladimir Lysikov +3 more

Free tensors are tensors which, after a change of bases, have free support: any two distinct elements of its support differ in at least two coordinates. They play a distinguished role in the theory of bilinear complexity, in particular in Strassen's duality theory for asymptotic rank. Within the context of quantum information theory, where tensors are interpreted as multiparticle quantum states, freeness corresponds to a type of multiparticle Schmidt decomposition. In particular, if a state is free in a given basis, the reduced density matrices are diagonal. Although generic tensors in $\mathbb{C}^n \otimes \mathbb{C}^n \otimes \mathbb{C}^n$ are non-free for $n \geq 4$ by parameter counting, no explicit non-free tensors were known until now. We solve this hay in a haystack problem by constructing explicit tensors that are non-free for every $n \geq 3$. In particular, this establishes that non-free tensors exist in $\mathbb{C}^n \otimes \mathbb{C}^n \otimes \mathbb{C}^n$, where they are not generic. To establish non-freeness, we use results from geometric invariant theory and the theory of moment polytopes. In particular, we show that if a tensor $T$ is free, then there is a tensor $S$ in the GL-orbit closure of $T$, whose support is free and whose moment map image is the minimum-norm point of the moment polytope of $T$. This implies a reduction for checking non-freeness from arbitrary basis changes of $T$ to unitary basis changes of $S$. The unitary equivariance of the moment map can then be combined with the fact that tensors with free support have diagonal moment map image, in order to further restrict the set of relevant basis changes.

Tensor models from the viewpoint of matrix models: the cases of loop models on random surfaces and of the Gaussian distribution

Valentin Bonzom, Frédéric Combes

Two direct connections between random tensors and random matrices are discussed in this article. In the rst part, we introduce U( \tau ) matrix models which generate fully packed, oriented loops on random surfaces. e latter are found to be in bijection with a set of regular edge-colored graphs. It is shown that the expansion in the number of loops is organized like the 1/ N expansion of rank-three tensor models. Recent results on tensor models are applied in this context. For example, congurations which maximize the number of loops are precisely the melonic graphs of tensor models and a scaling limit which projects onto themelonic sector is found. is approach is generalized to higher-rank tensor models, which generate loops with fugacity \tau on triangulations in dimension d–1 . In the second part, we introduce singular value decompositions to evaluate the expectations of polynomial observables of Gaussian random tensors. Performing the integrals over the unitary group leads to a notion of eective observables which expand onto regular trace invariants. We show that both asymptotic and exact new calculations of expectations can be performed this way.

The universality theorem

Razvan Gurău

Abstract This chapter initiates the study of random tensors and presents a universality theorem. It first introduces the Gaussian distribution for random tensors and then proceeds to the study of general trace invariant measures. It is shown that, assuming that the cumulants scale uniformly with N, a nontrivial large N limit exists only if the cumulants are properly uniformly bounded. It is furthermore shown that a trace invariant probability measure whose cumulants are properly uniformly bounded becomes Gaussian in the large N limit. In order to escape the Gaussian behavior one must consider distributions whose cumulants do not obey a uniform scaling bound, but which still admit a large N limit.

About the foundation of the Kubo generalized cumulants theory: a revisited and corrected approach

Marco Bianucci, Mauro Bologna

Abstract More than fifty years ago, in a couple of seminal works (Kubo 1962 J. Phys. Soc. Japan 17 1100–20; Kubo 1963 J. Math. Phys . 4 174–83) Kubo introduced the important idea of generalized cumulants, extending to stochastic operators this concept implicitly introduced by Laplace in 1810. Kubo’s idea has been applied in several branches of physics, where the result of the average process is a Lioville operator or an effective time evolution operator for the density matrix of spin systems or the reduced density matrix for boson-fermions etc. Despite this success, the theoretical developments in these Kubo works pose problems that were highlighted many years ago by Fox and van Kampen and never solved. These weaknesses and errors, in particular concerning the factorization property of exponentials of cumulants and the explicit expressions that give generalized cumulants in terms of generalized moments and vice-versa, caused some perplexity (and confusion) about the possible application of this procedure, limiting its use, in practice. In the present paper, we give a sound ground to the approach to cumulant operators, working in a general framework that shows the potentiality of the old Kubo idea, today not yet fully exploited. It results that, for the same moment operators, different definitions of generalized cumulants can be adopted. A general Kubo–Meeron closed-form formula giving cumulant operators in terms of moment operators cannot be obtained, but the reverse one, cumulants in terms of operators, is given and, noticeably, formally it does not depend on the specific nature of the moments, but just on the definition of the generalized cumulants.

Large NNN factorization of families of tensor trace-invariants

Sylvain Carrozza, Johann Chevrier, Luca Lionni

It was recently proven that, in contrast to their matrix analogues, the moments of a real Gaussian tensor of size N do not in general factorize over their connected components in the asymptotic large N limit. While the original proof of this rather surprising result was not constructive, explicit examples of non-factorizing moments, which are expectation values of trace-invariants, have since then been discovered. We explore further aspects of this problem, with a focus on Haar-distributed (or Gaussian) complex random tensors, which are more directly relevant to quantum information. We start out by exhibiting an explicit example of non-factorizing trace-invariant, thereby filling a gap in the recent literature. We then turn to the opposite question: that of finding interesting families of trace-invariants that do in fact factorize at large N. We establish three main theorems in this regard. The first one provides a sufficient combinatorial bound ensuring large N factorization, that is also simple enough to be applicable to various cases of practical relevance. Our second main result shows that the expectation value of any compatible trace-invariant is dominated by certain tree-like combinatorial structures at large N, which we refer to as tree-like dominant pairings. Our third main theorem establishes that any trace-invariant admitting tree-like dominant pairings does actually factorize at large N. In this way, we are able to prove that various families of trace-invariants that have been previously studied in the literature do factorize at large N. We apply our findings to the theory of multipartite quantum entanglement: to any trace-invariant is associated a multipartite generalization of Rényi entanglement entropy, whose typical expectation value in the uniform random quantum state can be explicitly computed assuming large N factorization.
