Abstract

We consider a generalization of the two-body contact interaction for nonrelativistic particles confined to a one-dimensional box, in which the interaction is decentered, i.e., the particles interact only when they are separated by a distance c. In contrast to the harmonically trapped system, this model is nonintegrable. Despite this, we demonstrate that the system exhibits partial solvability due to the presence of dark states, i.e., bosonic or fermionic states unaffected by the interaction. These states form exactly solvable subspaces embedded within an interacting spectrum. We characterize the stationary properties of the system, identify the conditions for the appearance of dark states, and show how they structure the spectrum and delineate interacting and noninteracting sectors.

Impact of dark states on the stationary properties of quantum particles with off-centered interactions in one dimension

G. Bougas, Nathan L. Harshman, Peter Schmelcher

We present a generalization of the two-body contact interaction for nonrelativistic particles trapped in one dimension. The particles interact only when they are a distance $c$ apart. The competition of the interaction length scale with the oscillator length leads to three regimes identified from the energy spectra. When $c$ is less than the oscillator length, particles avoid each other, whereas in the opposite case bunching occurs. In the intermediate region where the oscillator length is comparable to $c$, both exclusion and bunching are manifested. All of these regions are separated by dark states, i.e., bosonic or fermionic states which are not affected by the interactions.

Exactly solvable model of two trapped quantum particles interacting via finite-range soft-core interactions

Przemysław Kościk, Tomasz Sowiński

The exactly solvable model of two indistinguishable quantum particles (bosons or fermions) confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap and interacting via finite-range soft-core interaction is presented and many properties of the system are examined. Particularly, it is shown that independently on the potential range, in the strong interaction limit bosonic and fermionic solutions become degenerate. For sufficiently large ranges a specific crystallization appears in the system. The results are compared to predictions of the celebrated Busch et al. model and those obtained in the Tonks-Girardeau limit. The assumed inter-particle potential is very similar to the potential between ultra-cold dressed Rydberg atoms. Therefore, the model can be examined experimentally.

Ground-state of interacting bosons in an arbitrary one-dimensional potential: variational approach

Przemysław Kościk, Arkadiusz Kuroś, Adam Pieprzycki +1 more

We derive and describe a very accurate variational scheme for the ground state of the system of a few ultra-cold bosons confined in one-dimensional traps of arbitrary shapes. It is based on assumption that all inter-particle correlations have two-body nature. By construction, the proposed ansatz is exact in the noninteracting limit, exactly encodes boundary conditions forced by contact interactions, and gives full control on accuracy in the limit of infinite repulsions. We show its efficiency in a whole range of intermediate interactions for different external potentials. Our results manifest that for generic non-parabolic potentials mutual correlations forced by interactions cannot be captured by distance-dependent functions.

Analytical treatment of the interaction quench dynamics of two bosons in a two-dimensional harmonic trap

G. Bougas, S. I. Mistakidis, Peter Schmelcher

We investigate the quantum dynamics of two bosons, trapped in a two-dimensional harmonic trap, upon quenching arbitrarily their interaction strength and thereby covering the entire energy spectrum. Utilizing the exact analytical solution of the stationary system, we derive a closed analytical form of the expansion coefficients of the time-evolved two-body wave function, whose dynamics is determined by an expansion over the postquench eigenstates. The emergent dynamical response of the system is analyzed in detail by inspecting several observables such as the fidelity, the reduced one-body densities, the radial probability density of the relative wave function in both real and momentum space, and the Tan contact, which unveils the existence of short range two-body correlations. When the system is initialized in its bound state, it is perturbed in the most efficient manner as compared to any other initial configuration. Moreover, starting from an interacting ground state, the two-boson response is enhanced for quenches toward the noninteracting limit.

Collision dynamics and entanglement generation of two initially independent and indistinguishable boson pairs in one-dimensional harmonic confinement

David I. H. Holdaway, Christoph Weiß, S. A. Gardiner

We investigate finite-number effects in collisions between two states of an initially well-known number of identical bosons with contact interactions, oscillating in the presence of harmonic confinement in one dimension. We investigate two $N/2$ (interacting) ground states, which are initially displaced from the trap center, and the effects of varying interaction strength. The numerics focus on the simplest case of $N=4$. In the noninteracting case, such a system would display periodic oscillation with a half harmonic oscillator period (due to the left-right symmetry). With the addition of contact interactions between the bosons, collisions generate entanglement between each of the states and distribute energy into other modes of the oscillator. We study the system numerically via an exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian with a finite basis, investigating left-right number uncertainty as our primary measure of entanglement. Additionally, we study the time evolution and equilibration of the single-body von Neumann entropy for both the attractive and repulsive cases. We identify parameter regimes for which attractive interactions create behavior qualitatively different from that of repulsive interactions, due to the presence of bound states (quantum solitons), and explain the processes behind this.
