Abstract

This paper studies the quantification and structural properties of quantum average correlation based on average coherence. Motivated by two mathematically equivalent approaches to define average coherence: one by averaging over complete sets of mutually unbiased bases, and the other by integrating over all orthogonal bases under the Haar measure, we define an average correlation for bipartite systems as the difference between global and local skew information. This correlation measure is shown to satisfy essential properties including non negativity, contractivity under local quantum channels, and local unitary invariance. We further prove the equivalence between the average correlation defined via mutually unbiased bases and that defined via unitary groups. Finally, we derive a complementarity relation that connects wave-particle duality with the average correlation between a system and its environment.

Quantum average correlations and complementarity relations via metric-adjusted skew information

Xiaoyu Ma, Qing-Hua Zhang, Cong Xu

We investigate quantum average correlations and complementarity relations based on metric-adjusted skew information. Several natural averaging procedures are considered, including complete families of mutually unbiased bases, all orthonormal bases, operator orthonormal bases, and twirling channels induced by the unitary group. All these approaches lead to the same closed expression, which identifies the resulting average correlation as an intrinsic quantity independent of the averaging scheme. By defining measures of wave and particle features via metric-adjusted skew information, we establish complementarity relations among wave and particle features, quantum entropy, and average correlation. These results provide a unified framework for investigating quantum average correlations and complementarity relations in terms of metric-adjusted skew information.

Average coherence and entropy

Yajing Fan, Nan Li, Shunlong Luo

Quantum coherence is one of the characteristic features of quantum mechanics and underpins many quantum mysteries. To eliminate the influence of the reference basis on the coherence of a quantum state and uncover its intrinsic properties, it is common to study coherence by averaging over different reference bases. Using the metric-adjusted skew information, we explore three natural approaches to average coherence of a state: average over all orthonormal bases, average over all elements of an operator orthonormal base, and average over a complete family of mutually unbiased bases. We establish the equivalence among these three types of average coherence and interpret the unified average coherence as the coherence of a quantum state relative to a depolarizing channel. Additionally, we employ the unified average coherence to introduce a notion of quantum $f$ entropy (where $f$ is an operator monotone function associated with the metric-adjusted skew information) and demonstrate that quantum $f$ entropy possesses properties analogous to the ubiquitous von Neumann entropy. Furthermore, we illuminate some connections between quantum $f$ entropy and quasientropy, and compare $f$ entropy with von Neumann entropy, R\'enyi entropy, and Tsallis entropy for some typical states.

Complementarity relations for quantum coherence

Shuming Cheng, Michael J. W. Hall

Various measures have been suggested recently for quantifying the coherence of a quantum state with respect to a given basis. We first use two of these, the ${l}_{1}$-norm and relative entropy measures, to investigate tradeoffs between the coherences of mutually unbiased bases. Results include relations between coherence, uncertainty, and purity; tight general bounds restricting the coherences of mutually unbiased bases; and an exact complementarity relation for qubit coherences. We further define the average coherence of a quantum state. For the ${l}_{1}$-norm measure this is related to a natural ``coherence radius'' for the state and leads to a conjecture for an ${l}_{2}$-norm measure of coherence. For relative entropy the average coherence is determined by the difference between the von Neumann entropy and the quantum subentropy of the state and leads to upper bounds for the latter quantity. Finally, we point out that the relative entropy of coherence is a special case of G-asymmetry, which immediately yields several operational interpretations in contexts as diverse as frame alignment, quantum communication, and metrology, and suggests generalizing the property of quantum coherence to arbitrary groups of physical transformations.

Quantifying coherence via the generalized Wigner–Yanase–Dyson skew information

Yajing Fan, X. Guo, Zhihua Guo +1 more

Quantum coherence is an important feature that distinguishes quantum mechanics from classical physics. In this paper, we study the coherence of a quantum state with respect to a quantum channel, and introduce a coherence measure in terms of the generalized Wigner–Yanase–Dyson skew information. The basic properties and operational significance of the measure are expounded in detail, which shows that it is indeed a veritable quantity and satisfies many desirable conditions intuitively required for the coherence measures. We illustrate the significance of characterizing channels from the coherence perspective through some examples. Finally, we consider the average coherence of a state based on the generalized Wigner–Yanase–Dyson skew information with respect to any complete mutually unbiased bases in prime power dimensional systems, as well as with respect to all orthonormal bases, and show that these two averages are equivalent since they both can be seen as the coherence of the quantum state with respect to the depolarizing quantum channel.

Uncertainty relations for quantum coherence with respect to mutually unbiased bases

Alexey E. Rastegin

The concept of quantum coherence, including various ways to quantify the degree of coherence with respect to the prescribed basis, is currently the subject of active research. The complementarity of quantum coherence in different bases was studied by deriving upper bounds on the sum of the corresponding measures. To obtain a two-sided estimate, lower bounds on the coherence quantifiers are also of interest. Such bounds are naturally referred to as uncertainty relations for quantum coherence. We obtain new uncertainty relations for coherence quantifiers averaged with respect to a set of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs). To quantify the degree of coherence, the relative entropy of coherence and the geometric coherence are used. Further, we also derive novel state-independent uncertainty relations for a set of MUBs in terms of the min-entropy.

Average coherence relative to symmetric measurements and generalized symmetric measurements

Yajing FAN, Xueying Sha

Abstract Quantum coherence is one of the characteristic features of quantum mechanics and underpins many quantum mysteries. In this work, we investigate the average coherence of a quantum state with respect to symmetric positive operator-valued measures using metric-adjusted skew information. Specifically, we derive explicit expressions for the average coherence relative to mutually unbiased measurements and to general symmetric informationally complete measurements, and establish a complementary relation between average coherence and maximal coherence. Furthermore, we introduce a measure of average coherence based on metric-adjusted skew information for states with respect to a generalized symmetric measurements (GSMs). When these GSMs are required to be equinumerous, the corresponding average coherence reduces to that for symmetric measurements. Finally, we evaluate and compare various average coherence measures with different operator monotone functions for qubit states, Werner states, and isotropic states.
