Abstract

We investigate the magnetotransport properties of the one-band Hubbard-Holstein model at half-filling in three dimensions (3D) using exact diagonalization based semi-classical Monte Carlo simulations with phonons treated in the adiabatic limit. The low-temperature electronic correlation $U$ vs electron-phonon coupling $V$ phase diagram reveals two insulating phases--antiferromagnetic (AF-I) and charge-ordered (CO-I)--separated by a first-order transition, with no metallic phase observed at their intersection, indicating robustness of these phases in 3D. For $U \sim bandwidth$, the $V$ vs temperature $T$ phase diagram exhibits multiple phases including AF-I, CO-I, Mott-Hubbard insulator, bipolaronic insulator, and two bipolaronic metallic states. Several first-order transitions occur near $V \sim 3.75$. Above the ordering temperature, the density of states shows universal behavior dominated by electronic contribution, while susceptibility and DOS analyses reveal pseudogap features. Magnetic and transport properties along the phase boundary highlight strong proximity effects between competing phases, suggesting routes for tuning correlated materials and emergent electronic states.

Phase diagram of the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model at half and quarter filling

Rahul P. Hardikar, Rudolf Torsten Clay

The Hubbard-Holstein model is one of the simplest to incorporate both electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. In one dimension at half filling, the Holstein electron-phonon coupling promotes on-site pairs of electrons and a Peierls charge-density wave, while the Hubbard on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$ promotes antiferromagnetic correlations and a Mott insulating state. Recent numerical studies have found a possible third intermediate phase between Peierls and Mott states. From direct calculations of charge and spin susceptibilities, we show that (i) as the electron-phonon coupling is increased, first a spin gap opens, followed by the Peierls transition. Between these two transitions, the metallic intermediate phase has a spin gap, no charge gap, and properties similar to the negative-$U$ Hubbard model. (ii) The transitions between Mott/intermediate and intermediate/Peierls states are of the Kosterlitz-Thouless form. (iii) For larger $U$, the two transitions merge at a tricritical point into a single first-order Mott/Peierls transition. In addition, we show that an intermediate phase also occurs in the quarter-filled model.

Holstein-Hubbard model at half filling: A static auxiliary field study

Saurabh Pradhan, G. Venketeswara Pai

We study the Holstein-Hubbard model at half filling to explore the ordered phases such as the charge density wave and antiferromagnet. The Coulomb interaction is rewritten in terms of auxiliary fields. By treating the auxiliary fields and phonons as classical, we obtain real-space features of the system and transition between the phases from weak to strong coupling. When both interactions are weak, mutual competition between them leads to a metallic phase in an otherwise insulator-dominated phase diagram. Spatial correlations induced by thermal fluctuations lead to pseudogap features at intermediate range of coupling.

Superconductivity, charge-density waves, antiferromagnetism, and phase separation in the Hubbard-Holstein model

Seher Karakuzu, Luca F. Tocchio, Sandro Sorella +1 more

By using variational wave functions and quantum Monte Carlo techniques, we investigate the interplay between electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in the two-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model. Here, the ground-state phase diagram is triggered by several energy scales, i.e., the electron hopping $t$, the on-site electron-electron interaction $U$, the phonon energy ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$, and the electron-phonon coupling $g$. At half filling, the ground state is an antiferromagnetic insulator for $U\ensuremath{\gtrsim}2{g}^{2}/{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$, while it is a charge-density-wave (or bipolaronic) insulator for $U\ensuremath{\lesssim}2{g}^{2}/{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$. In addition to these phases, we find a superconducting phase that intrudes between them. For ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}/t=1$, superconductivity emerges when both $U/t$ and $2{g}^{2}/t{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$ are small; then, by increasing the value of the phonon energy ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$, it extends along the transition line between antiferromagnetic and charge-density-wave insulators. Away from half filling, phase separation occurs when doping the charge-density-wave insulator, while a uniform (superconducting) ground state is found when doping the superconducting phase. In the analysis of finite-size effects, it is extremely important to average over twisted boundary conditions, especially in the weak-coupling limit and in the doped case.

Intermediate Phase of the One Dimensional Half-Filled Hubbard-Holstein Model

Rudolf Torsten Clay, Rahul P. Hardikar

We present a numerical study of the Hubbard-Holstein model in one dimension at half filling, including finite-frequency quantum phonons. At half filling, the effects of the electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions compete with the Holstein phonon coupling acting as an effective negative Hubbard on-site interaction U that promotes on-site electron pairs and a Peierls charge-density wave state. Most previous work on this model has assumed that only Peierls or Mott phases are possible at half filling. However, there has been speculation that a third metallic phase exists between the Peierls and Mott phases. We confirm the intermediate phase, and show that the Luttinger liquid correlation exponent K(rho) >1 in this region, indicating dominant superconducting pair correlations. We explore the full phase diagram as a function of Hubbard U, phonon coupling constant, and phonon frequency.

Competition among Superconducting, Antiferromagnetic, and Charge Orders with Intervention by Phase Separation in the 2D Holstein-Hubbard Model

Takahiro Ohgoe, Masatoshi Imada

Using a variational Monte Carlo method, we study the competition of strong electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in the ground state of the Holstein-Hubbard model on a square lattice. At half filling, an extended intermediate metallic or weakly superconducting (SC) phase emerges, sandwiched between antiferromagnetic and charge order (CO) insulating phases. By carrier doping into the CO insulator, the SC order dramatically increases for strong electron-phonon couplings, but is largely hampered by wide phase separation (PS) regions. Superconductivity is optimized at the border to the PS.

One-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model with finite-range electron-phonon coupling

F. Hébert, Bo Xiao, V. G. Rousseau +2 more

The Hubbard-Holstein model describes fermions on a discrete lattice, with on-site repulsion between fermions and a coupling to phonons that are localized on sites. Generally, at half-filling, increasing the coupling $g$ to the phonons drives the system towards a Peierls charge density wave state, whereas increasing the electron-electron interaction $U$ drives the fermions into a Mott antiferromagnet. At low $g$ and $U$, or when doped, the system is metallic. In one dimension, using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we study the case where fermions have a long-range coupling to phonons, with characteristic range $\ensuremath{\xi}$, interpolating between the Holstein and Fr\"ohlich limits. Without electron-electron interaction, the fermions adopt a Peierls state when the coupling to the phonons is strong enough. This state is destabilized by a small coupling range $\ensuremath{\xi}$ and leads to a collapse of the fermions, and, consequently, phase separation. Increasing interaction $U$ will drive any of these three phases (metallic, Peierls, phase separation) into a Mott insulator phase. The phase separation region is once again present in the $U\ensuremath{\ne}0$ case, even for small values of the coupling range.
