Abstract

We study resonances for the semiclassical magnetic Laplacian in the full plane with a compactly supported magnetic field in the framework of semiclassical complex scaling and black box scattering theory. Assuming that the magnetic field is locally constant, we prove the existence of semiclassical resonances near the Landau levels with exponentially small imaginary parts. We also prove that resonances emerge from a magnetic step discontinuity along a curved interface or a non-degenerate magnetic well, and in the vicinity of anharmonic Landau levels if the field has an isolated zero.

High-energy localized eigenstates of an electronic resonator in a magnetic field

Victor V. Zalipaev, Fedor Vasilievich Kusmartsev, M. M. Popov

We present a semiclassical analysis of the high-energy eigenstates of an electron inside a closed resonator. An asymptotic method of the construction of the energy spectrum and eigenfunctions, localized in the small neighborhood of a periodic orbit, is developed in the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field and arbitrary scalar potential. The isolated periodic orbit is confined between two interfaces which could be planar, concave or even convex. Such a system represents a quantum electronic resonator, an analog of the well-known high-frequency optical or acoustic resonator with eigenmodes called 'bouncing ball vibrations'. The first step in the asymptotic analysis involves constructing a solitary localized asymptotic solution to the Schrodinger equation (electronic Gaussian beam—wavepackage). Then, the stability of a closed continuous family of periodic trajectories confined between two reflecting surfaces of the resonator boundary was studied. The asymptotics of the eigenfunctions were constructed as a superposition of two electronic Gaussian beams propagating in opposite directions between two reflecting points of the periodic orbits. The asymptotics of the energy spectrum are obtained by the generalized Bohr–Sommerfeld quantization condition derived as a requirement for the eigenfunction asymptotics to be periodic. For one class of periodic orbits, localized eigenstates were computed numerically by the finite element method using FEMLAB and proved to be in a very good agreement with those computed semiclassically.

Non-Hermitian Landau Levels

Anton Montag, Tomoki Ozawa

We formulate non-Hermitian Landau levels in two-dimensional systems under a complex perpendicular magnetic field. In the symmetric gauge, we derive their discretely spaced, highly degenerate complex spectra and biorthogonal eigenstates, and clarify the role of non-unitary gauge transformations. A non-Hermitian Harper-Hofstadter lattice model confirms the continuum theory and reveals Gaussian wave packet dynamics governed by semiclassical equations with a complex Lorentz force, pointing to possible experimental realizations of complex magnetic fields.

Average lower bound on magnetic double-well tunneling with asymptotically large well separation

Charles L. Fefferman, Say-Yeon Kwon, Jacob Shapiro +1 more

We study tunneling between two identical, smooth, compactly supported potential wells in a constant perpendicular magnetic field, with the coupling and magnetic field fixed and the well separation tending to infinity. For a sufficiently small positive magnetic field, we prove lower bounds on the hopping coefficient and on the splitting of the two lowest eigenvalues outside a set of separations of density zero. If the well centers are separated by $2d_1$ and the magnetic field strength is $bλ$, the lower bounds have the form $e^{-bλd_1^2-Cd_1^{1+δ}}$ for every fixed $δ\in(0,1)$. No radial or reflection symmetry of the single-well potential is assumed. The proof combines the explicit Landau resolvent kernel with a complex analytic estimate for logarithmic averages of the hopping coefficient.

Holomorphic quantum Hall states in higher Landau levels

Nicolas Rougerie, Jakob Yngvason

Eigenstates of the planar magnetic Laplacian with a homogeneous magnetic field form degenerate energy bands, the Landau levels. We discuss the unitary correspondence between states in higher Landau levels and those in the lowest Landau level, where wave functions are holomorphic. We apply this correspondence to many-body systems; in particular, we represent effective Hamiltonians and particle densities in higher Landau levels by using corresponding quantities in the lowest Landau level.

Long-time dynamics of coherent states in strong magnetic fields

Grégory Boil, San Vũ Ngọc

We consider the Schr\"odinger evolution of strongly localized wave packets under the magnetic Laplacian in the plane $\Bbb{R}^2$. When the initial energy is low, we obtain a precise control, in Schwartz seminorms, of the propagated states for times of order $1/\hbar$, where $\hbar$ is Planck's constant. In this semiclassical regime, we prove that the initial particle will always split into multiple coherent states, each one following the average dynamics of the guiding center motion but at its own speed, demonstrating a purely quantum ``ubiquity'' phenomenon.

Effect of the Landau Level Mixing on the Ground State of Two-Dimensional Electrons

D. Yoshioka

Two dimensional electrons in a strong magnetic field show the fractional quantum Hall effect at low temperatures. This effect is explained successfully by a discovery of a new liquid type ground state. However the infinitely strong magnetic field has been assumed in existing theories. Here the ground state around one third filling of the lowest Landau level is investigated at a finite magnetic field by numerical diagonalization of the Hamiltonian. When the cyclotron energy is not too small compared to a typical Coulomb energy, no qualitative change of the ground state is found: A natural generalization of the liquid state at the infinite magnetic field describes the ground state. Excitation energies of quasiparticles decrease as the magnetic field decreases.
