Abstract

We study $\mathbb{Z}_3$-symmetric Rabi model that describes a three-level system coupled to two bosonic modes. We derive a mapping of the two-mode $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Rabi model onto a qubit-boson ring. This mapping allows us to formulate a realistic implementation of the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Rabi model based on superconducting qubits. It also provides context for the previously proposed optomechanical implementation of the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Rabi model. In addition, we propose a physical implementation of the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Potts model via a coupled chain of $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Rabi models.

Two-photon quantum Rabi model with superconducting circuits

Simone Felicetti, Daniel Z. Rossatto, E. Rico +2 more

We propose a superconducting circuit to implement a two-photon quantum Rabi model in a solid-state device, where a qubit and a resonator are coupled by a two-photon interaction. We analyze the input-output relations for this circuit in the strong-coupling regime and find that fundamental quantum-optical phenomena are qualitatively modified. For instance, two-photon interactions are shown to yield a single- or two-photon blockade when a pumping field is either applied to the cavity mode or to the qubit, respectively. In addition, we derive an effective Hamiltonian for perturbative ultrastrong two-photon couplings in the dispersive regime, where two-photon interactions introduce a qubit-state-dependent Kerr term. Finally, we analyze the spectral collapse of the multiqubit two-photon quantum Rabi model and find a scaling of the critical coupling with the number of qubits. Using realistic parameters with the circuit proposed, three qubits are sufficient to reach the collapse point.

Cat states in one- and two-mode Z 3 Rabi models

Anatoliy I. Lotkov, Denis V. Kurlov, Valerii K. Kozin +2 more

We investigate one- and two-mode variants of the Z 3 -symmetric quantum Rabi model, which describe the interaction of a qutrit with one or two bosonic modes and are directly relevant for circuit-QED and spin-qudit platforms. We find a canonical transformation that allows one to obtain the spectrum of the Z 3 Rabi model using perturbation theory in a magnetic field. We show that in a certain parameter regime (deep-strong coupling and a small magnetic field), the three lowest eigenstates become Z 3 qutrit-boson cat states. In order to characterize these states, we introduce a joint qutrit-boson Wigner function and derive its closed-form expression for the qutrit-boson cat states. Numerical calculations across a wide range of coupling strengths show that the proposed Wigner function is a useful tool that allows one to unambiguously identify the states of the Z 3 qutrit-boson cat states.

Jaynes-Cummings dynamics in strong coupling for many-interacting-qubit quantum Rabi models

Roberto Grimaudo, Sagnik Chakraborty, Rosario Lo Franco +1 more

The present work focuses on the strong/weak interaction of many-body spin-systems with a cavity mode. It introduces the necessity of redefining the physical conditions determining the strong/weak coupling regime in those systems. In more complex systems, the effective coupling emerging from the collective dynamics may differ indeed from the actual coupling of each individual subsystem with the bosonic field. This is shown by highlighting some counter-intuitive dynamical effects properly related to the coupling regime: a Jaynes-Cummings dynamics emerging although a strong interaction is present. The universality of this result is demonstrated through the analysis of three distinct systems: a two-qubit, a two-qutrit, and an $N$-qubit chain quantum Rabi models.

Periodic quantum Rabi model with cold atoms at deep strong coupling

Geram R. Hunanyan, Johannes Koch, Stefanie Moll +3 more

The quantum Rabi model describes the coupling of a two-state system to a bosonic field mode. Recent theoretical work has pointed out that a generalized periodic version of this model, which maps onto Hamiltonians applicable in superconducting qubit settings, can be quantum simulated with cold trapped atoms. Here, we experimentally demonstrate atomic dynamics predicted by the periodic quantum Rabi model far in the deep strong-coupling regime. The two-state system is represented by two Bloch bands of cold atoms in an optical lattice, and the bosonic mode by oscillations in a superimposed optical dipole trap potential. The observed dynamics beyond the usual quantum Rabi physics becomes relevant when the edge of the Brillouin zone is reached, and evidence for collapse and revival of the initial state is revealed at extreme coupling conditions. Quantum Rabi model in the Brillouin zone with ultracold atoms

Simone Felicetti, E. Rico, Carlos Sabín +6 more

The quantum Rabi model describes the interaction between a two-level quantum system and a single bosonic mode. We propose a method to perform a quantum simulation of the quantum Rabi model, introducing an implementation of the two-level system provided by the occupation of Bloch bands in the first Brillouin zone by ultracold atoms in tailored optical lattices. The effective qubit interacts with a quantum harmonic oscillator implemented in an optical dipole trap. Our realistic proposal allows one to experimentally investigate the quantum Rabi model for extreme parameter regimes, which are not achievable with natural light-matter interactions. When the simulated wave function exceeds the validity region of the simulation, we identify a generalized version of the quantum Rabi model in a periodic phase space.

Analog quantum simulation of the Rabi model in the ultra-strong coupling regime

Jochen Braumüller, Michael Marthaler, Andre Schneider +4 more

The quantum Rabi model describes the fundamental mechanism of light-matter interaction. It consists of a two-level atom or qubit coupled to a quantized harmonic mode via a transversal interaction. In the weak coupling regime, it reduces to the well-known Jaynes-Cummings model by applying a rotating wave approximation. The rotating wave approximation breaks down in the ultra-strong coupling regime, where the effective coupling strength g is comparable to the energy ω of the bosonic mode, and remarkable features in the system dynamics are revealed. Here we demonstrate an analog quantum simulation of an effective quantum Rabi model in the ultra-strong coupling regime, achieving a relative coupling ratio of g/ω ~ 0.6. The quantum hardware of the simulator is a superconducting circuit embedded in a cQED setup. We observe fast and periodic quantum state collapses and revivals of the initial qubit state, being the most distinct signature of the synthesized model. An analog quantum simulation scheme has been explored with a quantum hardware based on a superconducting circuit. Here the authors investigate the time evolution of the quantum Rabi model at ultra-strong coupling conditions, which is synthesized by slowing down the system dynamics in an effective frame.
