Abstract

We investigate electron paring in two-dimensional electron systems mediated by the vacuum fluctuations of a quantized magnetic flux generated by the inductor of an LC resonator. The interaction induces long-range attractive interactions between angular momentum states which lead to pairing in a broad class of materials with critical temperatures of few Kelvin or even higher, depending on the field-covered area. The induced state is a pair-density wave topological chiral superconductor. The proposed platform in circuit QED environment offers a tunable promising tool for engineering electron interactions in two-dimensional systems to create new quantum phases of matter.

Kitaev chain in synthetic dimension with cavity-controlled Majorana modes

Adel Ali, Alexey Belyanin

We introduce a tunable synthetic-dimension platform for realizing Kitaev-chain physics with high degree of control over Majorana zero modes. It is based on a generic Landau-quantized two dimensional electron system coupled to the magnetic flux of a superconducting LC circuit. The structured vector potential of a superconducting LC inductor induces attractive interactions between electron angular-momentum states at the lowest Landau level. These states serve as a synthetic dimension for the coveted fermionic Kitaev chain, with Majorana zero modes existing at the boundaries of the angular-momentum lattice. The crucial advantage of this proposal is the possibility of a robust, nonlocal readout and control of the Majorana states by a LC resonator. The platform relies on mature circuit QED and semiconductor technologies and provides a promising pathway to topological quantum computing.

Fermionic Stoner-Dicke phase transition in Circuit Quantum Magnetostatics

Adel Ali, Alexey Belyanin

We present a minimal tunable many-body system of fermions coupled to quantum magnetic flux, which is analytically diagonalizable and exhibits a variety of many-body phenomena such as Stoner orbital instability and Dicke-like quantum phase transition. In contrast to standard cavity quantum electrodynamics with its electric-dipole coupling of the electric field operators with matter, here it is the quantized magnetic field of an LC-resonator which is coupled to the angular momentum of particles. Adding the Josephson junction (JJ) to the linear LC circuit allows us to explore nonlinear flux-matter phases and sector-selective photon dressing in regimes relevant to circuit QED and mesoscopic rings. Furthermore, we consider the tight-binding systems that exhibit a tunable nonlinearity representing artificial JJ, but without actual JJs included in the circuit.

Thermodynamic-Limit Evidence for Chiral Superconductivity Induced by Doping Chiral Topological Phases

Sen Niu, D. N. Sheng, Yang Peng

The emergence of superconductivity from doping strongly correlated chiral topological phases in purely repulsive two-dimensional fermionic systems is a problem of broad and fundamental interest. However, existing numerical evidence has been limited to finite-size studies, and direct thermodynamic-limit evidence for superconducting long-range order has remained lacking. Here we provide such evidence for chiral superconductivity in the triangular Hofstadter-Hubbard model by advancing a simplex tensor-network approach that simultaneously captures superconducting long-range order and chiral topological order in the presence of intrinsic charge fluctuations, a capability that has remained challenging for previous two-dimensional approaches. We show that a broad intermediate-$U$ chiral spin liquid is separated from the weak-$U$ Chern insulator by a Mott transition, together forming undoped parent chiral topological states. Upon hole doping, we identify a uniform chiral superconducting state in the infinite system, characterized by a finite complex pairing order parameter. The pairing field exhibits an almost universal phase winding over a broad interaction-doping regime, with a distinct pocket of opposite winding near the Mott criticality. In addition, the entanglement spectrum retains the chiral structure of the parent topological phases while developing additional low-energy branches upon doping. These results establish that chiral superconductivity emerges robustly from doped chiral topological phases.

From a semimetal to a chiral Fulde-Ferrell superfluid

Ting Fung Jeffrey Poon, Xiong-Jun Liu

The recent realization of two-dimensional (2D) synthetic spin-orbit (SO) coupling opens a broad avenue to explore novel topological states for ultracold atoms. Here, we propose a scheme to realize chiral Fulde-Ferrell superfluid for ultracold fermions, and show a generic theory that the topology of chiral superfluid phases can be uniquely determined from the normal states. The main findings are twofold. First, a semimetal is driven by a type of 2D SO coupling, and can be tuned into massive Dirac fermion phase with or without inversion symmetry. Without inversion symmetry, the superfluid phase of nonzero pairing momentum is favored under an attractive interaction. Furthermore, we show a fundamental theorem that the Chern number of a 2D chiral superfluid can be obtained from the 1D invariants of Fermi surfaces, with which the chiral Fulde-Ferrell superfluid with a broad topological region is predicted. This generic theorem is also useful for condensed-matter physics and material science in the search for new topological superconductors.

Topological superfluid of s -wave-interacting fermions by engineered orbital hybridization in an optical lattice

Maksims Arzamasovs, Shuai Li, Shuqi Han +2 more

Recent advanced experimental implementations of optical lattices with highly tunable geometry open up new regimes for exploring quantum many-body states of matter that had not been accessible previously. Here we report that a topological fermionic superfluid with higher Chern number emerges spontaneously from $s$-wave spin-singlet pairing in an orbital optical lattice when its geometry is tuned to explicitly break reflection symmetry. Qualitatively distinct from the conventional scheme that relies on higher partial-wave pairing, the crucial ingredient of our model is topology originating from mixing higher Wannier orbitals. It leads to unexpected changes in the topological band structure at the single-particle level, i.e., the bands are transformed from possessing two flux-$\ensuremath{\pi}$ Dirac points into a single quadratic touching point with flux $2\ensuremath{\pi}$. Based on such engineered single-particle bands, spin-singlet pairing of ultracold fermions arising from standard $s$-wave attractive interaction is found to induce higher Chern number (Chern number of 2) and topologically protected chiral edge modes, all occurring at a higher critical temperatures in relative scales, potentially circumventing one of the major obstacle for its realization in ultracold gases.

Simulating Dynamical Phases of Chiral p+ip Superconductors with a Trapped ion Magnet

Athreya Shankar, Emil A. Yuzbashyan, Victor Gurarie +3 more

Two-dimensional p + ip superconductors and superfluids are systems that feature chiral behavior emerging from the Cooper pairing of electrons or neutral fermionic atoms with nonzero angular momentum.Their realization has been a longstanding goal because they offer great potential utility for quantum computation and memory. However, they have so far eluded experimental observation both in solid-state systems as well as in ultracold quantum gases. Here, we propose to leverage the tremendous control offered by rotating two-dimensional trapped-ion crystals in a Penning trap to simulate the dynamical phases of two-dimensional p + ip superfluids. This is accomplished by mapping the presence or absence of a Cooper pair into an effective spin-1/2 system encoded in the ions' electronic levels. We show how to infer the topological properties of the dynamical phases, and discuss the role of beyond mean-field corrections.More broadly, our work opens the door to use trapped-ion systems to explore exotic models of topological superconductivity and also paves the way to generate and manipulate skyrmionic spin textures in these platforms.
