Abstract

Standard macroscopic QED is built on the second-order Green's function for the electric field and discards open-system boundary terms. Here we develop a first-order electromagnetic operator approach that retains both $\mathbf{E}$ and $\mathbf{H}$ and keeps those boundary terms, naturally leading to a quantum input-output formalism. We recast Maxwell's equations as an operator equation for the dual field $\mathit{E}$=$[\mathbf{E},\mathbf{H}]^T$, whose first-order Green operator $g$ propagates the electromagnetic state between surfaces. Symmetries of the Maxwell operator under energy and reciprocal inner products yield the propagation formula, Lorentz reciprocity, and a generalized optical theorem, with minimal vector calculus. Quantizing via a Heisenberg-Langevin approach for absorptive, dispersive media yields two independent quantum noise sources: bulk Langevin operators from material absorption and input-output field operators at the boundary. Expressing the interior field in terms of these operators and the Green propagator yields an exact closed commutation relation $[{\mathit{E}},{\mathit{E}}^\dagger]\propto \mathrm{Im}\,g$, consistent with the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. This identity holds even when dielectrics extend to the boundary, as in waveguide input-output problems, and enables quantum input-output descriptions of complex photonic structures where the Green's function is obtained numerically, extending the framework beyond cavities and waveguides.

Modal input-output theory for quantum nanophotonics from the first-order Maxwell operator

Ankit Kundu, Ishita Agarwal, Adhyyan S. Mansukhani +1 more

We develop a quantum input-output theory for open photonic systems based on macroscopic quantum electrodynamics using the first-order electromagnetic Green's function. Quantum fields enter and leave the photonic system through waveguide ports, while the electromagnetic Green's function propagates the fields through the arbitrary interior of the photonic system, which may be dispersive and absorbing. The resulting relation contains a port-to-port scattering matrix and a Langevin-noise contribution from material absorption that together preserve the bosonic output commutation relations. For embedded emitters, the low-saturation and single-excitation scattering response is determined by Green's functions connecting the ports and emitters while retaining the non-Markovianity of the photonic environment. Using finite-difference time-domain simulation, we calculate the emitter-modified transmission for a nanophotonic cavity and inverse-designed coupler, providing a direct route from computed electromagnetic response to a quantum input-output model.

Mode expansion and photon operators in dispersive and absorbing dielectrics

Omar Di Stefano, Salvatore Savasta, R. Girlanda

We present a one-dimensional quantization scheme for the electromagnetic field in arbitrary planar absorbing and dispersive dielectrics, taking into account explicitly the finite extent of media. The complete form of the electric field operator includes a part that corresponds to the free fields incident from the vacuum towards the medium and a particular solution which can be expressed by using the classical Green-function integral representation of the electromagnetic field. By expressing the classical Green function in terms of the light modes of the dielectric structure, we obtain a natural generalization to absorbing media of the familiar method of mode expansion which strictly applies to non-absorbing media. As an application of our mode expansion, we obtain general quantum-optical input-output relations relating the output photon operators in vacuum to the input photon operators and to the reservoir noise operators. The input-output relations obtained are uniquely determined by the knowledge of the classical light modes of the planar system. We finally show that our quantization scheme for arbitrary planar dielectrics satisfies the prescribed equal-time commutation relations of QED.

Dissipative Channels Determine Open Electromagnetic Quantization

Hyunwoo Choi, Junwoo Gim, Thomas E. Roth +2 more

We formulate a quantization scheme for open electromagnetic systems with arbitrary passive boundary conditions. Rather than specifying reservoirs phenomenologically, the method identifies them from the dissipation geometry of the Maxwell operator. Factoring the imaginary part of the Maxwell operator gives a bosonic realization of the field operator and separates the fluctuation channels into medium-assisted reservoirs from material absorption and boundary-assisted reservoirs from exchange through the open boundary. Depending on the boundary condition, the latter become free-space radiation modes, impedance-load channels, guided port modes, or more general boundary channels. Green-function input-output relations then follow as an application, yielding frequency-dependent scattering and noise kernels without Markov or single-mode assumptions. To illustrate the practical application, we consider a lossy structure with mixed impedance and outgoing boundaries, and photonic integrated circuit configurations with waveguide port boundaries.

Three-dimensional quantization of the electromagnetic field in dispersive and absorbing inhomogeneous dielectrics

Ho Trung Dung, L. Knöll, Dirk‐Gunnar Welsch

A quantization scheme for the phenomenological Maxwell theory of the full electromagnetic field in an inhomogeneous three-dimensional, dispersive, and absorbing dielectric medium is developed. The classical Maxwell equations with spatially varying and Kramers-Kronig consistent permittivity are regarded as operator-valued field equations, introducing additional current- and charge-density operator fields in order to take into account the noise associated with the dissipation in the medium. It is shown that the equal-time commutation relations between the fundamental electromagnetic fields $\mathbf{E}^$ and $\mathbf{B}^$ and the potentials $\mathbf{A}^$ and $\stackrel{^}{\ensuremath{\varphi}}$ in the Coulomb gauge can be expressed in terms of the Green tensor of the classical problem. From the Green tensors for bulk material and an inhomogeneous medium consisting of two bulk dielectrics with a common planar interface it is explicitly proven that the well-known equal-time commutation relations of QED are preserved.

Electromagnetic field quantization and quantum optical input-output relation for grating

Tiecheng Wang

A quantization scheme is developed for the radiation and higher order electromagnetic fields in one dimensional periodic, dispersive and absorbing dielectric medium. For this structure, the Green function is solved based on the plane wave expansion method, thus the photon operators, commutation relations and quantum Langevin equations are given and studied based on the Green function approach, moreover, the input-output relations are also derived. It is proved that this quantum theory can be reduced back to that of the predecessors' study on the homogenous dielectric. Based on this method, we find that the transformation of the photon state through the lossy grating is non-unitary and that the notable non-unitary transformation can be obtained by tuning the imaginary part of the permittivity, we also discussed the excellent quantum optical properties for the grating which are similar to the classical optical phenomena. We believe our work is very beneficial for the control and regulation of the quantum light based on gratings.

QED of lossy cavities: Operator and quantum-state input-output relations

M. Khanbekyan, L. Knöll, D.‐G. Welsch +2 more

Within the framework of exact quantization of the electromagnetic field in dispersing and absorbing media the input-output problem of a high-$Q$ cavity is studied, with special emphasis on the absorption losses in the coupling mirror. As expected, the cavity modes are found to obey quantum Langevin equations, which could be also obtained from quantum noise theories, by appropriately coupling the cavity modes to dissipative systems, including the effect of the mirror-assisted absorption losses. On the contrary, the operator input-output relations obtained in this way would be incomplete in general, as the exact calculation shows. On the basis of the operator input-output relations the problem of extracting the quantum state of an initially excited cavity mode is studied and input-output relations for the $s$-parametrized phase-space function are derived, with special emphasis on the relation between the Wigner functions of the quantum states of the outgoing field and the cavity field.
