Abstract

Motivated by growing evidence for the significance of the third-nearest-neighbor Heisenberg ($J_3$) interaction in candidate Kitaev materials, we investigate the dynamical properties of the Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) under a $J_3$ perturbation, focusing on its spin dynamical structure factor (DSF) and Raman scattering. Within a self-consistent parton mean-field plus random-phase approximation framework, we find that $J_3$ induces coherent, paramagnon-like collective modes that coexist with a high-energy Majorana continuum in the spin DSF. The softening of these modes with increasing $|J_3|$ signals a quantum phase transition to magnetic order. Remarkably, magnetic ordering sets in at a common critical $J_3$ for both ferromagnetic ($K<0$) and antiferromagnetic ($K>0$) Kitaev models, with the resulting ordered states forming exact dual pairs under a four-sublattice duality transformation that maps $(K,J_3) \rightarrow (-K,J_3)$. An external magnetic field further softens the preexisting paramagnon modes, thereby enhancing magnetic order. Perturbative Raman calculations show that while the Kitaev-like Raman vertex probes only itinerant matter Majorana fermions, the response from the $J_3$-like vertex features both matter Majoranas and visons. Four-vison excitations produce a sharp peak accompanied by a two-fermion continuum, whereas two-vison excitations yield a continuum closely resembling the single-matter-fermion density of states. These results provide a unified perspective on the dynamical signatures of $J_3$-perturbed KSL and are helpful for interpreting experimental spectra in candidate Kitaev materials with sizable $J_3$ interactions.

Dynamical response theory of interacting Majorana fermions and its application to generic Kitaev quantum spin liquids in a field

Peng Rao, Roderich Moessner, Johannes Knolle

Motivated by the appearance of Majorana fermions in a broad range of correlated and topological electronic systems, we develop a general method to compute the dynamical response of interacting Majorana fermions in the random-phase approximation (RPA). This can be applied self-consistently on top of Majorana mean-field theory backgrounds, thereby in particular providing a powerful tool to analyze behavior in the vicinity of (various heavily studied) exactly soluble models. Prime examples are quantum spin liquids (QSL) with emergent Majorana excitations, with the celebrated exact solution of Kitaev. We employ the RPA to study in considerable detail phase structure and dynamics of the extended Kitaev honeycomb K J Γ model, with and without an applied field. First, we benchmark our method with Kitaev's exactly soluble model, finding a remarkable agreement. The interactions between Majorana fermions even turn out to mimic the effect of local Z 2 flux excitations, which we explain analytically. Second, we show how small non-Kitaev couplings J and Γ induce Majorana bound states, resulting in sharp features in the dynamical structure factor in the presence of fractionalization: such “spinon excitons” naturally appear, and can coexist and interact with the broad Majorana continuum. Third, for increasing couplings or field, our theory predicts instabilities of the Kitaev QSL (KQSL) triggered by the condensation of the sharp modes. From the high-symmetry momenta of the condensation we can deduce which magnetically ordered phases surround the KQSL, in good agreement with previous finite-size numerics. We discuss implications for experiments and the broad range of applicability of our method to other QSL and Majorana systems.

Neutron scattering signatures of the 3D hyperhoneycomb Kitaev quantum spin liquid

A. Smith, Johannes Knolle, Dmitry L. Kovrizhin +2 more

Motivated by recent synthesis of the hyperhoneycomb material $\ensuremath{\beta}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{Li}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{3}$, we study the dynamical structure factor (DSF) of the corresponding 3D Kitaev quantum spin-liquid (QSL), whose fractionalized degrees of freedom are Majorana fermions and emergent flux loops. The properties of this 3D model are known to differ in important ways from those of its 2D counterpart---it has a finite-temperature phase transition, as well as distinct features in the Raman response. We show, however, that the qualitative behavior of the DSF is broadly dimension-independent. Characteristics of the 3D DSF include a response gap even in the gapless QSL phase and an energy dependence deriving from the Majorana fermion density of states. Since the majority of the response is from states containing a single Majorana excitation, our results suggest inelastic neutron scattering as the spectroscopy of choice to illuminate the physics of Majorana fermions in Kitaev QSLs.

Proximate quantum spin liquids and Majorana continua in magnetically ordered Kitaev magnets

Peng Rao, Roderich Moessner, Johannes Knolle

We study the spin excitation spectra in magnetically ordered phases proximate to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (KQSL). Although the low-energy universal features should be governed by the magnetic orders, the $\textit{non-universal}$ high-energy features of the KQSL and adjacent phases can be remarkably similar. Therefore, we study the extended Kitaev model within a Stoner-like theory using Majorana partons, and compute the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) intensities in the random phase approximation. First, we benchmark against the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg model and recover the AFM order with linear Goldstone modes. We then explore the phase diagram which agrees qualitatively with previous numerical results. In particular, the Majorana parton theory accurately captures Order-by-Disorder effects in the Kitaev-Heisenberg limit. We also find large INS intensities near the associated high-symmetry Brillouin zone (BZ) points of the magnetic orders. At intermediate and high energies, broad multi-spinon continua emerge across the BZ, providing a distinct mechanism for magnon decay and spectral broadening beyond the conventional multi-magnon decay scenario. Finally, we study the model Hamiltonian of candidate Kitaev material $α$-RuCl$_3$. The zigzag ground state agrees qualitatively with experiments, its stability under external magnetic field also exhibits strong anisotropy in the field directions, and broad scattering continua are recovered similar to those observed experimentally.

Response and phase transition of a Kitaev spin liquid in a local magnetic field

Shuang Liang, Bo-Sen He, Zhao-Yang Dong +3 more

We study the response of a Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) to a local magnetic field perpendicular to the Kitaev honeycomb lattice. The local magnetic field induces a dynamical excitation of a flux pair in the spin liquid and the system can be described by a generally particle-hole asymmetric interacting resonant level model. The dynamical excitation of the flux pair closes the flux gap in the spectrum of the spin correlation function locally for the gapless KSL even from the perturbative response to a weak magnetic field. Beyond the perturbative regime, the p-h asymmetry competes with the magnetic field and results in a rich phase diagram. Moreover, the magnetic field breaks the gauge equivalence of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kitaev couplings of the ground state and leads to very different behaviors for the two cases. The antiferromagnetic case experiences a first-order phase transition to the polarized state during magnetization, whereas the ferromagnetic case does not. This study can be generalized to the Kitaev model in a uniform magnetic field and may help understand issues in recent experiments on KSL candidates.

Dynamical transition in the Kitaev spin liquid under an external magnetic field

Yi-Xin Dai, Qing‐Feng Sun

We investigate magnetic-field-induced transitions in the dynamical spin correlation functions of the Kitaev spin liquid (KSL). Using time-dependent Majorana mean-field theory, we show that in the ferromagnetic KSL, the real-space propagation of spin correlations evolves from isotropic to highly anisotropic with increasing field strength. Notably, the anisotropy emerges as a unidirectional propagation of spin correlations, whose direction is dictated by the orientation of the magnetic field relative to the underlying Kitaev bond geometry. We analyze this phase transition through both a Majorana mean-field framework and perturbative approach, and propose some experimental signatures and possible detection schemes. We further demonstrate that a similar transition occurs in the antiferromagnetic KSL, and discuss why previous studies focusing on the [111] field direction have overlooked this phenomenon, which further suggests the possibility to identify such anisotropic dynamics in candidate Kitaev materials.

Schwinger boson perturbation theory for spin-$S$ Kitaev-Heisenberg magnets: phase diagram and dynamical response near Kitaev spin liquids

Daiki Sasamoto, Joji Nasu

We develop a Schwinger boson perturbative framework for the spin-$S$ Kitaev-Heisenberg model. The spin-liquid saddle point of the pure Kitaev model is used as the unperturbed state, and magnetic instabilities and dynamical spin correlations are evaluated around this saddle point. We decompose the Hamiltonian exactly into two parts by exploiting the Klein duality intrinsic to the Kitaev-Heisenberg model. We perform the random-phase approximation by taking the part invariant under the duality transformation as the unperturbed term and treating the remaining term, which changes sign under it, as the perturbation. We determine the phase boundaries separating the quantum spin-liquid regimes from the adjacent magnetically ordered phases for $S=1/2$, $1$, $3/2$, and $2$. The spin-liquid regions shrink rapidly with increasing $S$ and become very narrow at $S=2$. We also compute the spin dynamics of the spin-$S$ Kitaev-Heisenberg model, focusing on $S=1$, and find that the dressed dynamical spin structure factor retains a broad two-spinon continuum at finite energies, while the low-energy spectral weight softens at the ordering wave vectors of the adjacent magnetic phases. Our framework thus enables thermodynamic-limit calculations of spin dynamics near magnetic instabilities.
