Abstract

Non-Hermitian systems generally host complex spectra that bring unique spectral topologies, leading to the spectral braiding and non-Hermitian skin effect. The experimental exploration of non-Hermitian physics is mainly concentrated in artificial systems due to the flexibility in the introduction of the non-Hermiticity, but to date has focused only on the systems without gauge fields or with Abelian gauge fields. Here, we propose a non-Abelian Hatano-Nelson model with a nonreciprocal U(2) gauge field. The gauge field induces two non-Hermitian phenomena: the first is the Hopf-link-shaped complex energy braiding, and the second is the bipolar skin effect arising under the non-Abelian condition. The non-Abelian Hatano-Nelson model is implemented in electric circuits, and the Hopf-link-shaped admittance spectra and bipolar skin admittance modes are observed. Our work enriches the experimental non-Hermitian physics, and provides an approach to designing multifunctional non-Hermitian devices.

Exceptional Topological Signatures of Non-Hermitian Photonic Hopf-Link Braids

Samit Kumar Gupta

Non-Hermitian physics endows the non-Abelian systems with exceptional topology characterized by non-commutative braid patterns. Interplay of distinct competing sources of non-Hermiticity may induce novel topological effects. Here, we provide a generalized Hatano-Nelson model with higher-order nonreciprocal hoppings, non-Abelian gauge fields, and staggered gain-loss processes showing the exceptional topological structure of the Hopf-link braids that undergoes a EP-mediated topological phase transition. We demonstrate that mixing multiple nonreciprocal channels drives the system into highly intricate, nested complex energy Hopf-link braids and expands the topological landscape up to higher-order braiding sectors. Furthermore, utilizing biorthogonal eigenvector tracking, we map the structural evolution of the exceptional phase boundaries via the maximum Petermann factor in the phase angle parameter planes. We show that the gain-loss non-Hermiticity drives a topological crossover where the extended exceptional contours constrict into isolated regimes. The demonstration of EP-mediated topological phase transition of Hopf-link braids and the associated rich exceptional phase portraits may offer new physical insights with promising applications in robust, fault-tolerant communication channels and quantum computing platforms.

Controlling energy spectra and skin effect via boundary conditions in non-Hermitian lattices

S Rahul, Pasquale Marra

Non-Hermitian systems exhibit unique spectral properties, including the non-Hermitian skin effect and exceptional points, often influenced by boundary conditions. The modulation of these phenomena by generalized boundary conditions remains unexplored and not understood. Here, we analyze the Hatano-Nelson model with generalized boundary conditions induced by complex hopping amplitudes at the boundary. Using similarity transformations, we determine the conditions yielding real energy spectra and skin effect, and identify the emergence of exceptional points where spectra transition from real to complex. We demonstrate that tuning the boundary hopping amplitudes precisely controls the non-Hermitian skin effect, i.e., the localization of eigenmodes at the lattice edges. These findings reveal the sensitivity of spectral and localization properties to boundary conditions, providing a framework for engineering quantum lattice models with tailored spectral and localization features, with potential applications in quantum devices.

Spectral properties and non-Hermitian skin effect in the Hatano–Nelson model

Yu. P. Chuburin, Tat'yana Sergeevna Tinyukova

At present, non-Hermitian topological systems continue to be actively studed. In a rigorous approach, we study one of the key non-Hermitian systems — the Hatano–Nelson model $H$. We find the Green function for this Hamiltonian. Using the Green function, we analytically obtain the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of $H$ for finite and semi-infinite chains, as well as for an infinite chain with a local potential. We discuss the non-Hermitian skin effect for the models mentioned above. We also describe the boundary between localized and resonant eigenfunctions (for the zero spectral parameter, this is the boundary between non-Hermitian topological phases).

Interplay of Quasiperiodic Criticality and the Non-Hermitian Skin Effect

Zhangyuan Chen, Xianqi Tong, Xiaosen Yang

Quasiperiodic lattices can host critical eigenstates, whereas nonreciprocal hopping in non-Hermitian lattices can induce non-Hermitian skin effect. In this work, we investigate localization phenomena in a Hatano--Nelson model with quasiperiodically modulated hopping amplitudes, where nonreciprocity arises from unequal modulation strengths of the right and left hoppings. Using a non-unitary gauge transformation, we map the non-Hermitian system into a Hermitian quasiperiodic system and obtain an exact analytical expression for the Lyapunov exponent in the thermodynamic limit. Under periodic boundary conditions, inverse participation ratios and finite-size scaling analysis are used to identify the quasiperiodic critical regimes. The comparison shows that parameter regimes hosting quasiperiodic critical states under periodic boundary conditions can exhibit the non-Hermitian skin effect under open boundary conditions. Furthermore, the non-Hermitian skin effect associated with quasiperiodic critical regimes is also observed in representative long-range hopping models and multiband extensions. Our results provide an analytically controlled perspective on how quasiperiodicity, modulated nonreciprocity, and boundary conditions jointly shape the non-Hermitian skin effect in critical regimes.

Quantum geometry of the non-Hermitian skin effect

Ken-Ichiro Imura, Kohei Kawabata

The non-Hermitian skin effect is nonreciprocity-induced localization phenomena in which a macroscopic number of eigenstates accumulate anomalously at the boundary, accompanied by the extreme sensitivity to boundary conditions. Here, we develop a geometric characterization of the non-Hermitian skin effect. We demonstrate that the localization length scale associated with the skin effect is encoded in the quantum metric defined solely from right eigenstates, but not in the biorthogonal quantum metric. Moreover, we show that the quantum metrics can exhibit the power-law divergences at gapless points that depend on the different boundary conditions. We also reveal that cusps of the generalized Brillouin zone in non-Bloch band theory are signaled by discontinuities in the quantum metrics. We illustrate these behavior using prototypical non-Hermitian models, such as the Hatano-Nelson model and the non-Hermitian, nonreciprocal Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model.

Observation of non-Hermitian many-body skin effects in Hilbert space

Weixuan Zhang, Fengxiao Di, Hao Yuan +5 more

Non-Hermiticity greatly expands existing physical laws beyond the Hermitian framework, revealing various novel phenomena with unique properties. Up to now, most exotic nonHermitian effects, such as exceptional points and non-Hermitian skin effects, are discovered in single-particle systems. The interplay between non-Hermitian and manybody correlation is expected to be a more fascinating but much less explored area. Due to the complexity of the problem, current researches in this field mainly stay at the theoretical level. The experimental observation of predicted non-Hermitian manybody phases is still a great challenging. Here, we report the first experimental simulation of strongly correlated non-Hermitian many-body system, and reveal a new type of nonHermitian many-body skin states toward effective boundaries in Hilbert space. Such an interaction-induced non-Hermitian many-body skin effect represents the aggregation of bosonic clusters with non-identical occupations in the periodic lattice. In particular, by mapping eigen-states of three correlated bosons to modes of the designed threedimensional electric circuit, non-Hermitian many-body skin effects in Hilbert space is verified by measuring the spatial impedance response. Our finding not only discloses a new physical effect in the non-Hermitian many-body system, but also suggests a flexible platform to further investigate other non-Hermitian correlated phases in experiments.
