We determine conditions on classical group algebra codes so that they have pre-orientation for cup products and copy-cup gates. This defines quantum codes that have constant-depth $\operatorname{CZ}$ and $\operatorname{CCZ}$ gates constructed via tensor products of classical group algebra codes, including hypergraph and balanced products. We show that determining the conditions relies on solving the perfect matching problem in graph theory. Conditions are fully determined for the 2- and 3-copy-cup gates, for group algebra codes up to weight 4, including for codes with odd check weight. These include the bivariate bicycle codes, which we show do not have the pre-orientation for either type of copy-cup gate. We show that abelian weight 4 group algebra codes satisfying the non-associative 3-copy-cup gate necessarily have a code distance of 2, whereas codes that satisfy conditions for the symmetric 3-copy-cup gate can have higher distances, and in fact also satisfy conditions for the 2-copy-cup gate. Finally we find examples of quantum codes from the product of abelian group algebra codes that have inter-code constant-depth $\operatorname{CZ}$ and $\operatorname{CCZ}$ gates.

It is a major challenge in quantum fault-tolerance to obtain low-overhead protocols for performing non-Clifford gates. In this vein, we construct quantum codes with low-weight stabilizers that support transversal (i.e. low-depth) implementations of the non-Clifford Cr−1Z gate, for every constant r≥3. In particular, we obtain length-n quantum LDPC codes (with constant-weight stabilizers) of polynomial distance d≥n(1−ε)/r supporting transversal Cr−1Z gates on a close-to-linear number k≥n1−ε of disjoint tuples of logical qubits, for arbitrarily small ε>0. Our construction is the first with constant-weight stabilizers that obtains dk≫n, and as a consequence achieves arbitrarily small magic state overhead exponent γ=log(n/k)/log(d)>0. Comparable prior constructions instead required at least polylogarithmic stabilizer weight. We also show how to obtain linearly many k=Ω(n) logical Cr−1Z gates, though with stabilizer weight and physical circuit depth nε. We show that our transversal gates also support addressing (i.e. targeting) of specific logical qubits.
To obtain our codes, we develop a general transformation based on cup products that maps classical codes satisfying a multiplication property to quantum codes with transversal Cr−1Z. We apply this transformation to a new family of classical Tanner codes that we construct from punctured tensor products of algebraic codes.
We establish a systematic mathematical framework for constructing and computing (co)homological invariants that induce logical gates on quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) codes. By synthesizing tools from graph theory, algebraic topology, and number theory, we study constructions ranging from hypergraph product (HGP) codes to sheaf codes. Using commutative algebra, we generalize the notion of canonical logical representatives from HGP codes to the sheaf code setting, resolving a longstanding challenge in explicitly characterizing sheaf codewords. Building on this foundation, we present the first comprehensive computation of cup products within the intricate framework of sheaf codes. Given Artin's primitive root conjecture which holds under the generalized Riemann hypothesis, {we establish a nearly linear family of independent cup product cochains on almost-good qLDPC codes. Under a separate nonvanishing pairing condition, they are expected to yield parallel logical multi-controlled-Z gates. Moreover, by interpreting sheaf codes as covering spaces of HGP codes, we construct interlaced families through odd-degree lifts that preserve compatible invariant pairings, allowing nontrivial, constant-depth logical gates throughout an infinite family to be certified on a constant-size HGP seed. Treating local code constructions and expansion bounds as external inputs, our framework identifies the compatibility conditions for combining large dimension and distance, local testability, and constant-depth non-Clifford gates, thereby provides a mathematical foundation for separate constructions that realize these properties simultaneously.
Abstract We take initial steps towards a general framework for constructing logical gates in general quantum CSS codes. Viewing CSS codes as cochain complexes, we observe that cohomology invariants naturally give rise to diagonal logical gates. We show that such invariants exist if the quantum code has a structure that relaxes certain properties of a differential graded algebra. We show how to equip quantum codes with such a structure by defining cup products on CSS codes. The logical gates obtained from this approach can be implemented by a constant-depth unitary circuit. In particular, we construct a Λ Λ -fold cup product that can produce a logical operator in the Λ Λ -th level of the Clifford hierarchy on Λ Λ copies of the same quantum code, which we call the copy-cup gate . For any desired Λ Λ , we can construct several families of quantum codes that support gates in the Λ Λ -th level with various asymptotic code parameters.
We study a weighted-shift formulation of bivariate bicycle group-algebra (BBGA) codes over finite group algebras. One binary shift acts by right multiplication and the other by left multiplication; associativity ensures that these shifts commute even for a nonabelian seed group. Bivariate polynomials in the shifts, including mixed monomials, therefore define CSS codes. We give explicit sparsity bounds and distinguish nonabelian seed groups from codes that are intrinsically inequivalent to abelian realizations. For D3, a pair of weighted permutation shifts generates a regular C6×C12 action and recovers the known [[144,12,12]] and [[144,14,14]] bivariate bicycle codes. We also present a computer-verified [[144,16,12]] code over A4×C6, with every check of weight eight. This example belongs to the established nonabelian two-block group-algebra family. Exhaustive low-weight enumeration and an intrinsic stabilizer-support invariant certify that it is inequivalent to any ordinary abelian BB or two-block group-algebra realization, even under qubit permutations combined with local Clifford operations. Finally, a nonuniform weighted-shift construction over F2[C3] yields a [[18,4,3]] code with check weights six and eight. An exact enumeration of its minimum stabilizer supports rules out every ordinary binary 2BGA realization at that length, under the same equivalence. This establishes that the unrestricted weighted-shift formulation extends beyond the ordinary 2BGA class, even with an abelian seed group.
We consider quantum two-block group algebra (2BGA) codes, a family of smallest lifted-product (LP) codes. These codes are related to generalized-bicycle codes, except a cyclic group is replaced with an arbitrary finite group, generally non-Abelian. As special cases, 2BGA codes include a subset of square-matrix LP codes over Abelian groups, including quasicyclic codes, and all square-matrix hypergraph-product codes constructed from a pair of classical group codes. We establish criteria for permutation equivalence of 2BGA codes and give bounds for their parameters, both explicit and in relation to other quantum and classical codes. We also enumerate the optimal parameters of all inequivalent binary connected 2BGA codes with stabilizer generator weights $W\ensuremath{\le}8$, of length $n\ensuremath{\le}100$ for Abelian groups, and $n\ensuremath{\le}200$ for non-Abelian groups.
Quantum error-correcting codes with translation symmetry and local checks have been studied extensively, leading to a wide variety of fracton codes in three or more dimensions which lack a complete unifying picture. Recently, the study of translation-invariant codes with long-range checks has revealed impressive performance for small fixed-size instances in two dimensions. Here, we provide a unifying picture for a large family of translation-invariant codes, both local and long-range, that captures many fracton codes and all Abelian Two-Block Group Algebra (A2BGA) codes, including the Bivariate Bicycle (BB) codes. The balanced product structure of A2BGA codes leads to a local parent code that is a hypergraph product fracton model in a higher dimension. Different compactifications of a parent code produce a wide variety of descendant codes which provides a unifying picture for their properties. In particular, all BB codes with the same check weight are derived from a single parent hypergraph product fracton model. This construction allows us to extend Wang and Pryadko's code-parameter bounds for Generalized Bicycle codes to A2BGA codes. We conjecture that the transversal gates and energy barriers of the translation-invariant descendant codes are limited by those of their parent fracton models.
