Abstract

Nonlinear phase gates are essential to achieve the universality of continuous-variable quantum processing and its applications. We present a deterministic protocol for generating nonlinear phase gates in trapped ion systems using simultaneous two-tone sideband drives beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime. Our approach harnesses higher-order interaction terms typically neglected or suppressed to construct nonlinear phase gates. This methodology enables high-fidelity gate engineering with a near three-fold reduction in control pulses compared to state-of-the-art theoretical proposals.

Fast Ion Gates without the Lamb–Dicke Approximation by Robust Quantum Optimal Control

Abstract We present a robust quantum optimal control framework for implementing fast entangling gates on ion-trap quantum processors. The framework leverages tailored laser pulses to drive the multiple vibrational sidebands of the ions to create phonon-mediated entangling gates and, unlike the state of the art, requires neither weak-coupling Lamb–Dicke approximation nor perturbation treatment. With the application of gradient-based optimal control, it enables finding amplitude- and phase-modulated laser control protocols that work without the Lamb–Dicke approximation, promising gate speeds on the order of microseconds comparable to the characteristic trap frequencies. Also, robustness requirements on the temperature of the ions and initial optical phase can be conveniently included to pursue high-quality fast gates against experimental imperfections. Our approach represents a step in speeding up quantum gates to achieve larger quantum circuits for quantum computation and simulation, and thus can find applications in near-future experiments.

Deterministic nonlinear phase gates induced by a single qubit

Ki-min Park B, Petr Marek, Radim Filip

We propose deterministic realizations of nonlinear phase gates by repeating a finite sequence of non-commuting Rabi interactions between a harmonic oscillator and only a single two-level ancillary qubit. We show explicitly that the key nonclassical features of the ideal cubic phase gate and the quartic phase gate are generated in the harmonic oscillator faithfully by our method. We numerically analyzed the performance of our scheme under realistic imperfections of the oscillator and the two-level system. The methodology is extended further to higher-order nonlinear phase gates. This theoretical proposal completes the set of operations required for continuous-variable quantum computation.

Cubic Phase Gate with a Trapped Ion Oscillator

Nigel Benjamin Lee Junsheng, Eugene Koh Jun Wei, Mu Young Kim +1 more

The motional modes of trapped ions are promising candidates for continuous-variable (CV) quantum computation and simulation. However, to achieve a universal gate set for CV quantum computation, anharmonic nonlinear unitaries are required. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a protocol that allows us to approximate the cubic phase gate. By numerically optimizing the phase angles and amplitudes of a set of state-dependent force pulses, we demonstrate the cubic phase gate for both vacuum and low-$α$ coherent state inputs and verify its performance. Our protocol can also be extended to approximate other nonlinear unitaries.

Strong-coupling quantum logic of trapped ions

Mahdi Sameti, Jake Lishman, Florian Mintert

Essentially all known quantum gates rely on a weak-coupling approximation resulting in linear dynamics. With the explicit example of trapped ions, we show how high-fidelity quantum gates can be achieved outside such an approximation, and we derive readily implementable driving fields to realize gates with extremely high fidelities for ions well outside the Lamb-Dicke regime with motional temperatures achievable by only Doppler cooling.

Nonlinear quantum Rabi model in trapped ions

Xiao-Hang Cheng, Íñigo Arrazola, Julen Simon Pedernales +3 more

We study the nonlinear dynamics of trapped-ion models far away from the Lamb-Dicke regime. This nonlinearity induces a blockade on the propagation of quantum information along the Hilbert space of the Jaynes-Cummings and quantum Rabi models. We propose to use this blockade as a resource for the dissipative generation of high-number Fock states. Also, we compare the linear and nonlinear cases of the quantum Rabi model in the ultrastrong and deep strong-coupling regimes. Moreover, we propose a scheme to simulate the nonlinear quantum Rabi model in all coupling regimes. This can be done via off-resonant nonlinear red- and blue-sideband interactions in a single trapped ion, yielding applications as a dynamical quantum filter.
