Abstract

Propagation of short pulses through Cu$_2$O crystal containing Rydberg excitons is studied with the use of density matrix formalism and FDTD method. Saturation effects related to the so-called Rydberg blockade are studied extensively, exploring not only reduction of absorption (bleaching) but also power-dependent changes of the dispersive properties of the medium. The role of exciton lifetime and coherent population oscillations in the dynamics of the system is investigated. A pump-probe setup with two pulses is also studied, showing good agreement with recent experimental studies.

Nonlinear optical properties and self-Kerr effect of Rydberg excitons

Sylwia Zielińska‐Raczyńska, G. Czajkowski, Karol Karpiński +1 more

We show how to compute the nonlinear optical functions (absorption, reflection, and transmission) for a medium with Rydberg excitons (REs), including the effect of the coherence between the electron-hole pair and the electromagnetic field. Using the real density-matrix approach the analytical expressions for nonlinear optical functions are obtained and numerical calculations are performed for ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}\mathrm{O}$ crystal where REs have been observed. We report a good agreement with recently published experimental data. Propagation of the electromagnetic waves in Rydberg exciton media with nonlinear effect is also discussed and the possibility of obtaining self-phase modulation due to Kerr nonlinearity is investigated.

Dynamics of Cu$_2$O Rydberg excitons -- real density matrix approach

Karol Karpiński, G. Czajkowski

Basing on recent reliable measurements of the life- and coherence time of Cu$_2$O Rydberg excitons, we present an analytical method which enables to describe the experimental results. The real-density matrix approach (RDMA) is applied to describe two-photon absorption in Cu$_2$O through the excitonic response to the exciting fields. This approach produces an analytical expression for the emission intensity time evolution, and can be used to explain trends in reported experimental data. Our approach takes into account the effect of the coherence between the electron-hole pair and the electromagnetic fields, the quantum beats and the life- and coherence time dependence on the applied laser power. Adding a separation of slow- and rapid dynamics components we find excellent agreement with the experimental data.

Quantum interference of Rydberg excitons in Cu 2 O : Quantum beats

Sylwia Zielińska‐Raczyńska, David Ziemkiewicz

A density matrix formalism is employed to calculate the emission of multilevel Rydberg excitonic system, highlighting picosecond-scale dynamics and coherent effects such as quantum beats. The theoretical results for one- and two-photon excitations of various Rydberg excitons and configurations providing the insight into their dynamics are compared with recent experimental data. In particular, the effect of Rydberg blockade on the quantum beat phenomenon is discussed.

Optical Properties of Rydberg Excitons

Sylwia Zielińska‐Raczyńska, G. Czajkowski, David Ziemkiewicz

We show how to compute the optical functions when Rydberg Excitons appear, including the effect of the coherence between the electron-hole pair and the electromagnetic field. We use the Real Density Matrix Approach (RDMA), which, combined with Green's function method, enables one to derive analytical expressions for the optical functions. Choosing the susceptibility, we performed numerical calculations appropriate to a Cu$_2$0 crystal. The effect of the coherence is displayed in the line shape. We also examine in details and explain the dependence of the oscillator strength and the resonance placement on the state number. We report a good agreement with recently published experimental data.

Nonlinear optical properties and Kerr nonlinearity of Rydberg excitons in Cu2O quantum wells

David Ziemkiewicz, G. Czajkowski, Karol Karpiński +1 more

The quantum confinement of Rydberg excitons (REs) in quantum structures opens the way towards considering nonlinear interactions in such systems. We present a theoretical calculation of optical functions in the case of a nonlinear coupling between REs in a quantum well with an electromagnetic wave. Using the real density matrix approach (RDMA), the analytical expressions for a linear and nonlinear absorption are derived and numerical calculations for ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}\mathrm{O}$ quantum wells are performed. The results indicate the conditions in which quantum well confinement states can be observed in linear and nonlinear optical spectra. The Kerr nonlinearity and self-phase modulation in such a system are studied. The effect of the Rydberg blockade and the associated optical bleaching are also discussed and confronted with available experimental data.

Direct Measurement of the Lifetime and Coherence Time of Cu 2 O Rydberg Excitons

Poulab Chakrabarti, Kerwan Morin, Delphine Lagarde +2 more

Rydberg states of excitons are promising quantum objects to engineer giant nonlinearities in a solid-state system. For this purpose, a deeper understanding of the dynamics of Rydberg excitons and of their potential for coherent manipulation becomes important. We report experimental results where two-photon absorption is resonant with various Rydberg states of excitons in copper oxide and we detect their emission dynamics on a streak camera with subpicosecond resolution. This technique enables the direct measurement of the Rydberg states lifetimes, which are in good agreement with the expected Rydberg scaling law. Moreover, we observe several intriguing dynamics including the presence of long-lived coherent oscillations. Finally, we independently measure the coherence time of the Rydberg states using a modified Michelson interferometer and find a good agreement with the coherent oscillations detected in the exciton emission dynamics. The lifetimes also reveal the absence of inhomogeneous broadening in the current high-precision spectroscopic data for the S series, which together with the presence of significant coherence time confirms the suitability of the system for coherent engineering.
