Questioning the reasonableness of the quantum nonlocality debate

Abstract

We critically discuss the apparent lack of logical rigor pervading the debate on quantum nonlocality. Strong convictions often prevail over rational assessment, leading to the acceptance of loose ideas that become entrenched dogmas. The lack of sound rationales and adherence to the rules of logical inference lead to widely adopted antinomies that receive little conceptual scrutiny.

On the Unreasonableness of the Quantum Nonlocality Debate

Justo Pastor Lambare

We draw attention to an apparent, perplexing lack of logical rigor pervading the debate on quantum nonlocality. This paucity of rational thinking and compliance with the rules of logical inference leads to the production of unacceptable antinomies, which are widely and uncritically adopted by the scientific community without rigorous conceptual scrutiny.

A Critical Analysis of the Quantum Nonlocality Problem: On the Polemic Assessment of What Bell Did

Justo Pastor Lambare

Despite their Nobel prize-winning empirical falsification, the interpretation of the Bell inequality remains controversial. An objective analysis of Bell's work on nonlocality shows that Bell's rationale calls for reconsidering a widespread argument on quantum nonlocality yielding a clearer formulation free from the usual obscurities that lead to misleading controversies. By dismissing unnecessary metaphysical tenets, it is possible to probe the core of the problem and determine under what rational assumptions locality or nonlocality become feasible alternatives. The approach renders a more balanced perspective on a long-standing polarized interpretative debate.

A Critical Analysis of the Quantum Nonlocality Problem

Justo Pastor Lambare

The alleged nonlocal character of quantum mechanics is inextricably related to the formulation of the Bell theorem. However, as we shall see, that relation is commonly incorrectly assessed. The departure from the clear line of reasoning that John Bell tried to convey has led to a polarization of part of the scientific community into radical irreconcilable positions. We show how the correct appreciation of Bell's work calls for reinterpreting the usual significance given to the Bell theorem yielding a more rational perspective of the problem. Given the relevance of the Bell-type inequalities in quantum information technology and quantum foundations, further clarification of their relation to the nonlocality conundrum deserves due attention. The exposition is also of didactic value. It shows the problems arising from incorrect inferences and superfluous metaphysical ideas.

A Critical Analysis of the Quantum Nonlocality Problem: On the Polemic Assessment of What Bell Did

Justo Pastor Lambare

Despite their Nobel Prize-winning empirical implementation, the Bell inequality interpretation remains controversial. An objective analysis of Bell's work on nonlocality shows that Bell's rationale calls for reconsidering a widespread argument on quantum nonlocality, yielding a precise formulation free from the usual obscurities that lead to misleading controversies. By dismissing unnecessary metaphysical tenets, it is possible to probe the core of the problem and determine under what rational assumptions locality or nonlocality become feasible alternatives clarifying their relation to the Bell inequality. The approach renders a more balanced perspective over a long-standing polarized interpretative debate.
