Abstract

We obtain an exact solution for the spectral function for one-dimensional Bose-Bose and Fermi-Fermi mixtures with strong repulsive interactions, valid in arbitrary confining potentials and at all frequency scales. For the case of harmonic confinement, we show that, on top of the ladder structure of the density excitations imposed by the external confinement, spin excitations emerge as sideband peaks, with dispersion related to the one of ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic spin chains and a width fundamentally larger for fermionic mixtures than for bosonic ones, as determined by the different symmetry of spin-excited states. The observation of spin excitation branches can provide a univocal probe of interaction-induced magnetism in ultracold atoms.

Magnetism in Strongly Interacting One-Dimensional Quantum Mixtures

Pietro Massignan, Jesper Levinsen, Meera M. Parish

We consider two species of bosons in one dimension near the Tonks-Girardeau limit of infinite interactions. For the case of equal masses and equal intraspecies interactions, the system can be mapped to a S=1/2 XXZ Heisenberg spin chain, thus allowing one to access different magnetic phases. Using a powerful ansatz developed for the two-component Fermi system, we elucidate the evolution from few to many particles for the experimentally relevant case of an external harmonic confinement. In the few-body limit, we already find clear evidence of both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin correlations as the ratio of intraspecies and interspecies interactions is varied. Furthermore, we observe the rapid emergence of symmetry-broken magnetic ground states as the particle number is increased. We therefore demonstrate that systems containing only a few bosons are an ideal setting in which to realize the highly sought-after itinerant ferromagnetic phase.

Fermionization of a strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixture in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

Bess Fang, Patrizia Vignolo, Christian Miniatura +1 more

We consider a strongly interacting one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Fermi mixture confined in a harmonic trap. It consists of a Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas (1D Bose gas with repulsive hard-core interactions) and of a noninteracting Fermi gas (1D spin-aligned Fermi gas), both species interacting through hard-core repulsive interactions. Using a generalized Bose-Fermi mapping, we determine the one-body density matrices, exact particle density profiles, momentum distributions, and behavior of the mixture under 1D expansion when opening the trap. In real space, bosons and fermions do not display any phase separation: the respective density profiles extend over the same region and they both present a number of peaks equal to the total number of particles in the trap. In momentum space the bosonic component has the typical narrow TG profile, while the fermionic component shows a broad distribution with fermionic oscillations at small momenta. Due to the large boson-fermion repulsive interactions, both the bosonic and the fermionic momentum distributions decay as $C{p}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ at large momenta, like in the case of a pure bosonic TG gas. The coefficient $C$ is related to the two-body density matrix and to the bosonic concentration in the mixture. When opening the trap, both momentum distributions ``fermionize'' under expansion and turn into that of a Fermi gas with a particle number equal to the total number of particles in the mixture.

Exact solutions for strongly interacting quantum gases in one dimension

Anna Minguzzi

Strongly repulsive Bose and Fermi gases under external confining potential are amenable toexact solutions by generalized Girardeau mappings. We have used those solutions tounderstand the equilibrium and dynamical properties of bosons, fermions and mixtures. I willspecifically focus on the spectral function for lattice bosons and on the spin-mixing dynamicsof two-component Fermi gases in harmonic traps.

One-dimensional mixtures of several ultracold atoms: a review

Tomasz Sowiński, Miguel Ángel García-March

Recent theoretical and experimental progress on studying one-dimensional systems of bosonic, fermionic, and Bose-Fermi mixtures of a few ultracold atoms confined in traps is reviewed in the broad context of mesoscopic quantum physics. We pay special attention to limiting cases of very strong or very weak interactions and transitions between them. For bosonic mixtures, we describe the developments in systems of three and four atoms as well as different extensions to larger numbers of particles. We also briefly review progress in the case of spinor Bose gases of a few atoms. For fermionic mixtures, we discuss a special role of spin and present a detailed discussion of the two- and three-atom cases. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different computation methods applied to systems with intermediate interactions. In the case of very strong repulsion, close to the infinite limit, we discuss approaches based on effective spin chain descriptions. We also report on recent studies on higher-spin mixtures and inter-component attractive forces. For both statistics, we pay particular attention to impurity problems and mass imbalance cases. Finally, we describe the recent advances on trapped Bose-Fermi mixtures, which allow for a theoretical combination of previous concepts, well illustrating the importance of quantum statistics and inter-particle interactions. Lastly, we report on fundamental questions related to the subject which we believe will inspire further theoretical developments and experimental verification.

Magnetic ordering and quantum statistical effects in strongly repulsive Fermi-Fermi and Bose-Fermi mixtures

Xin Guan, Murray T. Batchelor, Jeong Yong Lee

We investigate magnetic properties and statistical effects in one-dimensional (1D) strongly repulsive two-component fermions and in a 1D mixture of strongly repulsive polarized fermions and bosons. Universality in the characteristics of phase transitions, magnetization, and susceptibility in the presence of an external magnetic field $H$ are analyzed from the exact thermodynamic Bethe ansatz solution. We show explicitly that polarized fermions with a repulsive interaction have antiferromagnetic behavior at zero temperature. A universality class of linear field-dependent magnetization persists for weak and finite strong interaction. The system is fully polarized when the external field exceeds the critical value ${H}_{c}^{F}\ensuremath{\approx}\frac{8}{\ensuremath{\gamma}}{E}_{F}$, where ${E}_{F}$ is the Fermi energy and $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ is the dimensionless interaction strength. In contrast, the mixture of polarized fermions and bosons in an external field exhibits square-root field-dependent magnetization in the vicinities of $H=0$ and the critical value $H={H}_{c}^{M}\ensuremath{\approx}\frac{16}{\ensuremath{\gamma}}{E}_{F}$. We find that a pure boson phase occurs in the absence of the external field, fully polarized fermions and bosons coexist for $0<H<{H}_{c}^{M}$, and a fully polarized fermion phase occurs for $H\ensuremath{\geqslant}{H}_{c}^{M}$. This phase diagram for the Bose-Fermi mixture is reminiscent of weakly attractive fermions with population imbalance, where the interacting fermions with opposite spins form singlet pairs.

Analytical and numerical studies of Bose–Fermi mixtures in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

Amin S. Dehkharghani, F. F. Bellotti, Nikolaj Thomas Zinner

Abstract In this paper we study a mixed system of bosons and fermions with up to six particles in total. All particles are assumed to have the same mass. The two-body interactions are repulsive and are assumed to have equal strength in both the Bose–Bose and the Fermi–Boson channels. The particles are confined externally by a harmonic oscillator one-body potential. For the case of four particles, two identical fermions and two identical bosons, we focus on the strongly interacting regime and analyze the system using both an analytical approach and density matrix renormalization group calculations using a discrete version of the underlying continuum Hamiltonian. This provides us with insight into both the ground state and the manifold of excited states that are almost degenerate for large interaction strength. Our results show great variation in the density profiles for bosons and fermions in different states for strongly interacting mixtures. By moving to slightly larger systems, we find that the ground state of balanced mixtures of four to six particles tends to separate bosons and fermions for strong (repulsive) interactions. On the other hand, in imbalanced Bose–Fermi mixtures we find pronounced odd–even effects in systems of five particles. These few-body results suggest that question of phase separation in one-dimensional confined mixtures are very sensitive to system composition, both for the ground state and the excited states.
