Abstract

A bstract We analyze spin entanglement in $$ \Lambda \overline{\Lambda} $$ Λ Λ ¯ pairs produced in the decays of spin-zero particles, contrasting predictions from quantum field theory (QFT) with those of local hidden-variable theories (LHVTs). Using the self-analyzing weak decays Λ → pπ − and $$ \overline{\Lambda}\to \overline{p}{\pi}^{+} $$ Λ ¯ → p ¯ π + , we derive the joint angular distributions within QFT. Our key findings are: for scalar production $$ h\to \Lambda \overline{\Lambda} $$ h → Λ Λ ¯ , no LHVT respecting locality and angular-momentum conservation can reproduce the QFT distribution. For pseudoscalar production $$ a\to \Lambda \overline{\Lambda} $$ a → Λ Λ ¯ , a CPT-symmetric LHVT is excluded by positivity constraints given the measured analyzing powers; however, if CPT symmetry is relaxed, an explicit LHVT construction — with uniform hidden-variable measure and response functions satisfying $$ {b}_1{c}_1=3{\alpha}_{\Lambda}{\alpha}_{\overline{\Lambda}} $$ b 1 c 1 = 3 α Λ α Λ ¯ — can match the QFT result. For the most general spin-zero decay $$ s\to \Lambda \overline{\Lambda} $$ s → Λ Λ ¯ with arbitrary scalar-pseudoscalar mixing, we, under CPT invariance, identify the regions of parameter space where the QFT joint angular distribution does or does not admit an LHVT realization. These distinct signatures provide clear, experimentally testable criteria to discriminate between QFT and LHVT in $$ \Lambda \overline{\Lambda} $$ Λ Λ ¯ systems across different production mechanisms.

Does the Weinberg angle allow a local hidden-variable description for the leptonic decays of an entangled $ZZ$ pair?

Junle Pei

Quantum entanglement in di-boson systems offers a useful testing ground for exploring the boundary between quantum-mechanical correlations and classical descriptions based on local hidden variables. In this work, I study the spin-polarization state of a $Z_1Z_2$ pair produced from the decay of a spin-0 particle and investigate whether the angular correlations predicted by quantum field theory (QFT) in the leptonic decays $Z_1(\to e^-_1 e^+_1)Z_2(\to e^-_2 e^+_2)$ can be reproduced by a local hidden-variable theory (LHVT) under angular-momentum conservation. By matching the LHVT angular distribution to the QFT prediction coefficient by coefficient, I derive the conditions under which an LHVT construction exists. For the case $w\neq 0$, I show that, apart from trivial product-state configurations, an LHVT construction exists only for a unique entangled state, corresponding to $a_1=a_3=-a_2=1/\sqrt{3}$ and $b_2=b_3=0$, together with restricted windows of the weak-mixing angle $θ_W$. For $w=0$, I derive a necessary and sufficient criterion for the existence of an LHVT construction in terms of a closed set of algebraic and positivity conditions. As an application, I consider the phenomenologically relevant interaction $sZ^μZ_μ$ and show that an LHVT construction exists at threshold $m_s=2m_Z$, whereas it does not exist for $m_s>2m_Z$.

Test of local realism via entangled $$\Lambda \bar{\Lambda }$$ system

M. Ablikim, Mikhail N. Achasov, P. Adlarson +97 more

Abstract The non-locality of quantum correlations is a fundamental feature of quantum theory. The Bell inequality serves as a benchmark for distinguishing between predictions made by quantum theory and local hidden variable theory (LHVT). Recent advancements in photon-entanglement experiments have addressed potential loopholes and have observed significant violations of variants of Bell inequality. However, these violations do not completely disprove LHVT. To further rule out LHVT, experiments involving massive-entangled particles are necessary, in addition to those conducted with massless photons, which interact electromagnetically. In this study, we utilize (10.087±0.044)×109 J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. We present the non-local correlation test of spin entanglement using a massive ΛΛbar bipartite system, which is formed and decays through strong and weak interactions, respectively. Through measurements of the angular distribution of p pbar in J/ψ→ γηc and subsequent ηc→Λ(pπ-)Λbar(pbar π+) cascade decays, a significant violation of LHVT predictions is observed in a loophole-free test of a variant of the Bell inequality, which is given by the Clauser-Horne inequality. The exclusion of LHVT is determined to be significant at a level of 5.2σ.

Bypassing spin-analyzing power dependence for quantum entanglement at colliders: a case study of $$ \Lambda \overline{\Lambda} $$

A bstract We study, as a concrete case study using the $$ \Lambda \left(\to p{\pi}^{-}\right)\overline{\Lambda}\left(\to \overline{p}{\pi}^{+}\right) $$ Λ → p π − Λ ¯ → p ¯ π + system, whether quantum entanglement in fermion pairs produced at colliders can be certified solely using angular information from final-state decays, while remaining independent of the parity-violating decay parameters α Λ and $$ {\alpha}_{\overline{\Lambda}} $$ α Λ ¯ . Building on a general decomposition of any angular observable in terms of Wigner d-functions, we show that the expectation value must take the form $$ {\mathcal{O}}_0+{\mathcal{O}}_1{\alpha}_{\Lambda}+{\mathcal{O}}_2{\alpha}_{\overline{\Lambda}}+{\mathcal{O}}_3{\alpha}_{\Lambda}{\alpha}_{\overline{\Lambda}} $$ O 0 + O 1 α Λ + O 2 α Λ ¯ + O 3 α Λ α Λ ¯ , with coefficients 𝒪 i ( i = 0 , 1 , 2 , 3) linear in the spin-density matrix elements $$ {\alpha}_{k,j}{\alpha}_{m,n}^{\ast } $$ α k , j α m , n ∗ . We obtain the value ranges of observables over the general and separable spaces of α k,j , and demonstrate a sufficient entanglement condition for pure states, extending it to mixed states by convexity. In constructing an α Λ - and $$ {\alpha}_{\overline{\Lambda}} $$ α Λ ¯ -independent witness from angular observables alone, we find that there are obstacles to probe quantum entanglement via the inequality-type and ratio-type ways. In particular, for the ratio-type criterion 〈 A 〉/〈 B 〉, the presence of zeros of 〈 B 〉 in both the general and separable spaces of $$ {\alpha}_{k,j}\left(k,j=\pm \frac{1}{2}\right) $$ α k , j k j = ± 1 2

Colliders are not testing locality via Bell’s inequality nor providing an unconditional proof of entanglement

Steven Adam Abel, Herbi K. Dreiner, Rhitaja Sengupta +1 more

A bstract Recently there has been an increased interest in possible tests of locality via Bell’s inequalities, as well as separately tests of entanglement at colliders, in particular at the LHC. These have involved various physical processes, such as $$ t\overline{t} $$ t t ¯ , or τ + τ − production, or the decay of a Higgs boson to two vector bosons H → VV ∗ . We argue that none of these proposals constitute a test of locality via Bell’s inequality or promise unconditional observational evidence of entanglement. In all cases what is measured are the momenta of the final state particles. Using the construction proposed by Kasday (1971) in a different context, and adapted to collider scenarios by Abel, Dittmar, and Dreiner (1992), it is straightforward to construct a local hidden variable theory (LHVT) which exactly reproduces the data. This construction is only possible as the final state momenta all commute. We show that this LHVT satisfies Bell’s inequality or the related CHSH inequality as appropriate for all the proposed LHC collider tests in the literature. Thus a test of locality via Bell’s inequality is not possible at colliders. The LHVT is also by construction local, i.e. all correlations are separable. Thus an unconditional proof of entanglement is also inherently not possible at colliders. It can only be shown that the entanglement within the Standard Model consistently describes the data.

Feasibility of testing local hidden variable theories in a Charm factory

Junli Li, Cong‐Feng Qiao

It is commonly believed that the local hidden variable theories (LHVTs) can be tested through measuring the Bell inequalities. This scheme, for the massive particle system, was originally set up for the entangled ${K}^{0}{\overline{K}}^{0}$ pair system from the $\ensuremath{\phi}$ factory. In this paper we show that the $J/\ensuremath{\Psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{0}{\overline{K}}^{0}$ process is even more realistic for this goal. We analyze the unique properties of $J/\ensuremath{\Psi}$ in the detection of basic quantum effects, and find that it is possible to use $J/\ensuremath{\Psi}$ decay as a test of LHVTs in the future $\ensuremath{\tau}$-charm factory. Our analyses and conclusions are generally also true for other heavy onium decays.
