Abstract

We study the topological properties of a one-dimensional quasiperiodic-potential-modulated mosaic trimer lattice. To begin with, we first investigate the topological properties of the model in the clean limit free of quasiperiodic disorder based on analytical derivation and numerical calculations of the Zak phase $Z$ and the polarization $P$. Two nontrivial topological phases corresponding to the $1/3$ filling and $2/3$ filling, respectively, are revealed. Then we incorporate the mosaic modulation and investigate the influence of quasiperiodic disorder on the two existing topological phases. Interestingly, it turns out that quasiperiodic disorder gives rise to multiple distinct effects for different fillings. At $2/3$ filling, the topological phase is significantly enhanced by the quasiperiodic disorder and topological Anderson insulator emerges. Based on the calculations of polarization and energy gap, we explicitly present corresponding topological phase diagram in the $λ-J$ plane. While for the $1/3$ filling case, % the topological phase is dramatically suppressed by the same quasiperiodic disorder. the quasiperiodic disorder dramatically compresses the topological phase, and strikingly, further induces the emergence of reentrant topological phase transitions instead. Furthermore, we verify the topological phase diagrams by computing the many-body ground state fidelity susceptibility for both the $1/3$ filling and $2/3$ filling cases. Our work exemplifies the diverse roles of quasiperiodic disorder in the modulation of topological properties, and will further inspire more research on the competitive and cooperative interplay between topological properties and quasiperiodic disorder.

The Haldane model under quenched disorder

Miguel Gonçalves, Pedro Ribeiro, Eduardo V. Castro

We study the half-filled Haldane model with Anderson and binary disorder and determine its phase diagram, as a function of the Haldane flux and staggered sub-lattice potential, for increasing disorder strength. We establish that disorder stabilizes topologically nontrivial phases in regions of the phase diagram where the clean limit is topologically trivial. At small disorder strength, our results agree with analytical predictions obtained using a first order self-consistent Born approximation, and extend to the intermediate and large disorder values where this perturbative approach fails. We further characterize the phases according to their gapless or gapped nature by determining the spectral weight at the Fermi level. We find that gapless topological nontrivial phases are supported for both Anderson and binary disorder. In the binary case, we find a reentrant topological phase where, starting from a trivial region, a topological transition occurs for increasing staggered potential $η$, followed by a second topological transition to the trivial phase for higher values of $η$.

Topological quantum phase transitions in quasicrystalline potential modulated one-dimensional p-wave superconductors

Yan Gu, Zhipeng WANG, Zhanpeng LU

The topological phase transitions and localization properties in a 1D p-wave superconductor under Fibonacci quasi-periodic potential modulation are investigated in this work. By calculating the Z2 topological invariant, the topological phase diagram of the system is determined numerically. It is found that the system can transition from a topologically trivial phase to a topological Anderson superconductor phase through the Fibonacci quasi-periodic modulation. Moreover, under certain parameters, the system undergoes multiple topological Anderson superconductor phase transitions, accompanied by the emergence of zero-energy modes. However, in the case of strong disorder, the topological Anderson superconductor phase is destroyed, indicating that the topological Anderson superconductor phase can be induced only within a finite range of parameters. Furthermore, by calculating and analyzing the fractal dimension and the mean inverse participation ratio (MIPR) order parameter, the localization properties of the system are analyzed. The results show that regardless of how the disorder intensity increases, the fractal dimension values of most eigenstates always remain within a range of 0–1. Subsequently, the variations in the fractal dimensions of all eigenstates for different system sizes are studied. The results show that the fractal dimension values of most eigenstates are away from 0 and 1. These results indicate that the wavefunction in the bulk of the topological Anderson superconductor phase induced by Fibonacci quasi-periodic potential is a critical state wavefunction, with the system overall being in a critical phase. The stability of the critical phase is confirmed by scale behavior of MIPR as shown in figure. It differs from the traditional topological Anderson superconductor phase induced by random disorder or AA-type quasi-periodic disorder. The results provide new insights into and references for studying topological phase transitions and localization transitions in 1D p-wave superconductors.

Connecting topological Anderson and Mott insulators in disordered interacting fermionic systems

Guo-Qing Zhang, Ling-Zhi Tang, Lingfeng Zhang +2 more

The topological Anderson and Mott insulators are two phases that have so far been separately and widely explored beyond topological band insulators. Here we combine the two seemingly different topological phases into a system of spin-1/2 interacting fermionic atoms in a disordered optical lattice. We find that the topological Anderson and Mott insulators in the noninteracting and clean limits can be adiabatically connected without gap closing in the phase diagram of our model. Lying between the two phases, we uncover a disordered correlated topological insulator, which is induced from a trivial band insulator by the combination of disorder and interaction, as the generalization of topological Anderson insulators to the many-body interacting regime. The phase diagram is determined by computing various topological properties and confirmed by unsupervised and automated machine learning. We develop an approach to provide a unified and clear description of topological phase transitions driven by interaction and disorder. The topological phases can be detected from disorder-/interaction-induced edge excitations and charge pumping in optical lattices.

Reentrant topological transitions in a one-dimensional quantum wire coupled to superconductor with quasiperiodic lattice modulation

Masaki Tezuka, Norio Kawakami

We study the condition for a topological superconductor (TS) phase with edge Majorana fermions to appear when a quasiperiodic lattice modulation is applied to a one-dimensional quantum wire with strong spin-orbit interaction situated under a magnetic field and in proximity to a superconductor. By density-matrix renormalization group analysis we find that multiple topological phases with Majorana edge modes are realized in finite ranges of the filling factor, showing a sequence of reentrant transitions. An on-site interaction stabilizes the topological phases, as observed for systems without lattice modulation in [E. M. Stoudenmire, J. Alicea, O. A. Starykh, and M. P. A. Fisher, Phys. Rev. B 84, 014503 (2011)]. The stability of the TS in the presence of a harmonic trap potential is also discussed.

Recent progress on disorder-induced topological phases

Dan-Wei Zhang, Ling-Zhi Tang

Topological states of matter in disordered systems without translation symmetry have attracted great interest in recent years. These states with topological characters are not only robust against certain disorders, but also can be counterintuitively induced by disorders from a topologically trivial phase in the clean limit. In this review, we summarize the current theoretical and experimental progress on disorder-induced topological phases in both condensed-matter and artificial systems. We first introduce the topological Anderson insulators (TAIs) induced by random disorders and their topological characterizations and experimental realizations. We then discuss various extensions of TAIs with unique localization phenomena in quasiperiodic and non-Hermitian systems. We also review the theoretical and experimental studies on the disorder-induced topology in dynamical and many-body systems, including topological Anderson-Thouless pumps, disordered correlated topological insulators and average-symmetry protected topological orders acting as interacting TAI phases. Finally, we conclude the review by highlighting potential directions for future explorations.

Topological and dynamical phase transitions in the Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model with quasiperiodic and long-range hoppings

Weijie Zhang, Yi-Piao Wu, Ling-Zhi Tang +1 more

Abstract Disorders and long-range hoppings can induce exotic phenomena in condensed matter and artificial systems. We study the topological and dynamical properties of the quasiperiodic Su–Schrier–Heeger model with long-range hoppings. It is found that the interplay of quasiperiodic disorder and long-range hopping can induce topological Anderson insulator phases with non-zero winding numbers ω = 1 , 2 , and the phase boundaries can be consistently revealed by the divergence of zero-energy mode localization length. We also investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics by ramping the long-range hopping along two different paths. The critical exponents extracted from the dynamical behavior agree with the Kibble–Zurek mechanic prediction for the path with W = 0.90 . In particular, the dynamical exponent of the path crossing the multicritical point is numerical obtained as 1 / 6 ∼ 0.167 , which agrees with the unconventional finding in the previously studied XY spin model. Besides, we discuss the anomalous and non-universal scaling of the defect density dynamics of topological edge states in this disordered system under open boundary condictions.
