Abstract

Irreversibility implies a preferred flow of time, yet special relativity denies the existence of a preferred clock. This tension has long obstructed the formulation of a relativistic master equation: standard Markovian approximations either break Lorentz covariance, trigger catastrophic vacuum heating, or depend arbitrarily on the observer's foliation. In this work, we derive a Lorentz-invariant description of irreversibility for quantum fields. We take an approach that explicitly models the measurements required to observe irreversible dynamics. Instead of evolving the system along an abstract geometric time parameter, we anchor the dynamics to a physical, relational scalar clock field. Using a relational Tomonaga-Schwinger framework, we derive a local, non-Markovian master equation that is manifestly covariant and completely positive. We show that the finite resolution of the physical clock acts as a covariant regulator, preventing the vacuum instability that plagues white-noise models. This framework demonstrates that a consistent relativistic theory of decay exists, provided the reference frame is treated as a dynamical quantum resource rather than a gauge choice. In a gravitating context, the resulting dynamics is described by a hybrid classical-quantum (CQ) evolution that remains completely positive and trace preserving (CPTP).

Is Exact Markovianity Fundamental Once Time Is Relational?

Partha Nandi, Francesco Petruccione

Markovian open quantum theory assumes evolution with respect to an external classical time parameter, yet no preferred notion of time exists fundamentally in relativistic physics. We resolve this tension by formulating relativistic open quantum dynamics relationally through finite-resolution quantum clocks. Using the Schwinger-Tomonaga formalism, we derive a covariant master equation directly on spacetime hypersurfaces and show that the resulting reduced dynamics is generically non-Markovian even for local interactions. Environmental correlations and clock fluctuations jointly generate the memory kernel, while the Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan (GKLS) structure emerges only after relational coarse-graining, implying that exact Markovian evolution is effective rather than fundamental. In the sharp-clock limit, the formalism reduces to the Anastopoulos-Hu gravitational decoherence equation.

A Flash-Based Relativistic Collapse Model for Quantum Fields

Nicolò Piccione

Spontaneous collapse models provide a possible, testable solution to the quantum measurement problem, but constructing a relativistic version applicable to quantum field theory remains an important open challenge. Challenges in constructing relativistic collapse models include avoiding superluminal signaling and foliation dependence, controlling energy production, and ensuring vacuum stability. Here, we present a relativistic collapse framework that addresses these problems at the cost of introducing a new space of physical states, whose complete characterization is left open. A modified, history-dependent Aharonov--Albert prescription describes instantaneous nonlocal state updates on arbitrary spacelike foliations while preserving foliation independence. To ensure vacuum stability, we modify the standard unitary evolution through a prescription that we name dynamical vacuum subtraction. The resulting dynamical map is linear and trace-preserving but not positive on the full set of standard density operators. We establish no-signaling by proving microscopic parameter independence, and identify conditions under which standard nonrelativistic collapse dynamics are recovered. Finally, we apply our framework to a free massive scalar field, obtaining finite particle-number and energy-increase rates at leading order in the long-time regime, together with further promising evidence for the consistency of the framework.

Absolute Simultaneity Theory. A Medium-Based Framework for Relativistic Kinematics and Quantum Nonlocality

Freddy Santermans

AbstractLoophole-free Bell experiments have conclusively demonstrated that non-local correlations are a fundamental property of physical reality. Within the Minkowskian framework of Special Relativity (SRT), the relativity of simultaneity renders the temporal ordering of spacelike-separated events inherently frame-dependent. This creates a conceptual inconsistency for any ontologically realist interpretation of quantum mechanics: if measurement outcomes correspond to objective physical events, then the absence of a preferred foliation leads unavoidably to contradictory causal histories or retrocausal influences. In this work, we formulate a Conditional No-Go Theorem showing that Ontological Realism, Linear Causality, and Fundamental Lorentz Invariance cannot all hold simultaneously. Preserving a coherent causal structure therefore requires relinquishing Lorentz invariance as a primitive spacetime symmetry. We propose Absolute Simultaneity Theory (AST), a framework in which Lorentz covariance emerges thermodynamically from a quantum vacuum treated as a structured medium in equilibrium. Drawing on analogies with condensed-matter systems—particularly Volovik’s superfluid vacuum paradigm—we show that a preferred rest frame, plausibly identified with the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) frame, is fully compatible with the empirical success of SRT. In AST, local Lorentz symmetry arises as a stability condition of the underlying vacuum dynamics rather than as a fundamental geometric postulate. This reconceptualization allows quantum non-locality and relativistic kinematics to coexist within a unified, time-ordered ontology.

Spacetime Quantum Reference Frames and superpositions of proper times

Flaminia Giacomini

In general relativity, the description of spacetime relies on idealised rods and clocks, which identify a reference frame. In any concrete scenario, reference frames are associated to physical systems, which are ultimately quantum in nature. A relativistic description of the laws of physics hence needs to take into account such quantum reference frames (QRFs), through which spacetime can be given an operational meaning. Here, we introduce the notion of a spacetime quantum reference frame, associated to a quantum particle in spacetime. Such formulation has the advantage of treating space and time on equal footing, and of allowing us to describe the dynamical evolution of a set of quantum systems from the perspective of another quantum system, where the parameter in which the rest of the physical systems evolves coincides with the proper time of the particle taken as the QRF. Crucially, the proper times in two different QRFs are not related by a standard transformation, but they might be in a quantum superposition one with respect to the other.Concretely, we consider a system of N relativistic quantum particles in a weak gravitational field, and introduce a timeless formulation in which the global state of the N particles appears "frozen", but the dynamical evolution is recovered in terms of relational quantities. The position and momentum Hilbert space of the particles is used to fix the QRF via a transformation to the local frame of the particle such that the metric is locally inertial at the origin of the QRF. The internal Hilbert space corresponds to the clock space, which keeps the proper time in the local frame of the particle. Thanks to this fully relational construction we show how the remaining particles evolve dynamically in the relational variables from the perspective of the QRF. The construction proposed here includes the Page-Wootters mechanism for non interacting clocks when the external degrees of freedom are neglected. Finally, we find that a quantum superposition of gravitational redshifts and a quantum superposition of special-relativistic time dilations can be observed in the QRF.

Observer-Internal Record Dynamics and Emergent Spacetime Structure

Jeremie Modine

This paper presents an observer-inclusive, semiclassical framework in which quantum measurement, the emergence of time, and spacetime curvature are unified through the dynamics of record formation. Measurement is modeled as a local, causal stabilization process driven by irreversible record creation within closed quantum systems, eliminating the need for external wavefunction collapse. Time is shown to emerge as a derived quantity proportional to record flux rather than as a fundamental background parameter. Regions of suppressed entropy production correspond to effective “timeless” steady states, while ordinary relativistic proper time is recovered in semiclassical regimes. The framework introduces a covariant, Planck-suppressed coupling between spacetime curvature and local record flow. Record density is defined on invariant causal diamonds using sandwiched Rényi mutual information to preserve Lorentz covariance and ultraviolet regularity. The energetic cost of record formation is compensated via Landauer’s principle, ensuring consistency with the Bianchi identities, null energy conditions, and the no-signaling theorem. The resulting theory is explicitly effective and semiclassical. It makes no claim to a fundamental quantum gravity completion, but provides a consistent, observer-inclusive description of measurement, time, and geometric response compatible with known physical constraints and open to experimental falsification.

Hybrid completely positive Markovian quantum-classical dynamics

Lajos Diósi

A concise and self-contained derivation of hybrid quantum-classical dynamics is given in terms of Markovian master equations. Many previously known results are rederived and revised and some of them are completed or corrected. Using a method as simple as possible, our goal is a brief introduction to the state of the art of hybrid dynamics, with a limited discussion of the implications for foundations and without discussion of further relevance in the measurement problem, quantum gravity, chemistry, numeric methods, etc. Hybrid dynamics is defined as a special case of composite quantum dynamics where the observables of one of the two subsystems are restricted to the commuting set of diagonal operators in a fixed basis. With this restriction, the derivation of hybrid dynamical equations is clear conceptually and simple technically. Jump and diffusive dynamics follow in the form of hybrid master equations. Their stochastic interpretation (called unravelings) is derived. We discuss gauge-type ambiguities, problems of uniqueness, and covariance of the diffusive master equation. Also conditions of minimum noise and of monitoring the quantum trajectory are derived. We conclude that the hybrid formalism is equivalent to the standard Markovian theory of time-continuous quantum measurement (monitoring) on the one hand and is a motivating alternative formalism on the other.
