Abstract

Despite decades of research, the universal nature of fluctuations in disordered quantum systems remains poorly understood. Here, we present extensive numerical evidence that fluctuations in two-dimensional (2D) Anderson localization belongs to the (1+1)-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. In turn, by adopting the KPZ framework, we gain fresh insight into the structure and phenomenology of Anderson localization itself. We analyze both localized eigenstates and time-evolved wave packets, demonstrating that the fluctuation of their logarithmic density follows the KPZ scaling. Moreover, we reveal that the internal structure of these eigenstates exhibits glassy features characteristic of the directed polymer problem, including the emergence of dominant paths together with pinning and avalanche behavior. Localization is not isotropic but organized along preferential branches of weaker confinement, corresponding to these dominant paths. For localized wave packets, we further demonstrate that their spatial profiles obey a stretched-exponential form consistent with the KPZ scaling, while remaining fully compatible with the single-parameter scaling (SPS) hypothesis, a cornerstone of Anderson localization theory. Altogether, our results establish a unified KPZ framework for describing fluctuations and microscopic organization in 2D Anderson localization, revealing the glassy nature of localized states and providing new understanding into the universal structure of disordered quantum systems.

Anomalous ballistic scaling in the tensionless or inviscid Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation

Enrique Rodríguez-Fernández, Silvia N. Santalla, Mario Castro +1 more

The one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation is becoming an overarching paradigm for the scaling of nonequilibrium, spatially extended, classical and quantum systems with strong correlations. Recent analytical solutions have uncovered a rich structure regarding its scaling exponents and fluctuation statistics. However, the zero surface tension or zero viscosity case eludes such analytical solutions and has remained ill-understood. Using numerical simulations, we elucidate a well-defined universality class for this case that differs from that of the viscous case, featuring intrinsically anomalous kinetic roughening (despite previous expectations for systems with local interactions and time-dependent noise) and ballistic dynamics. The latter may be relevant to recent quantum spin chain experiments which measure KPZ and ballistic relaxation under different conditions. We identify the ensuing set of scaling exponents in previous discrete interface growth models related with isotropic percolation, and show it to describe the fluctuations of additional continuum systems related with the noisy Korteweg-de Vries equation. Along this process, we additionally elucidate the universality class of the related inviscid stochastic Burgers equation.

Universal Kardar-Parisi-Zhang Dynamics in Integrable Quantum Systems

Bingtian Ye, Francisco Machado, Jack Kemp +2 more

Although the Bethe ansatz solution of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model dates back nearly a century, the anomalous nature of its high-temperature transport dynamics has only recently been uncovered. Indeed, numerical and experimental observations have demonstrated that spin transport in this paradigmatic model falls into the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. This has inspired the significantly stronger conjecture that KPZ dynamics, in fact, occur in all integrable spin chains with non-Abelian symmetry. Here, we provide extensive numerical evidence affirming this conjecture. Moreover, we observe that KPZ transport is even more generic, arising in both supersymmetric and periodically driven models. Motivated by recent advances in the realization of SU(N)-symmetric spin models in alkaline-earth-based optical lattice experiments, we propose and analyze a protocol to directly investigate the KPZ scaling function in such systems.

Universal fluctuations of two localized interacting particles in one dimension

Sen Mu, Gabriel Lemarié, Jiangbin Gong

We investigate the universal fluctuations of localized wave functions in the Fock space of two interacting particles in one-dimensional disordered systems, focusing on the interplay between random potentials and random long-range interactions. By mapping the system onto a directed polymer problem, we show that random potentials alone produce correlated energies for the sites in the Fock space, giving rise to the fluctuation growth exponent 1 / 2 . Introducing random long-range interactions alters these correlations and drives the system's fluctuations into the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class in (1+1)D with the exponent 1 / 3 . To validate the universality of the observed fluctuation scaling, we study a complex directed polymer model with competing point and columnar disorder. Our results confirm that columnar disorder corresponds to on-site energies in the Fock space from the random potentials, while point disorder models the effects of random long-range interactions between the two particles. These findings provide new insights into the Fock-space perspective for examining disordered quantum many-body systems, and they emphasize the critical role of disorder structure in determining the universality class of fluctuations in localized quantum systems.

Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality in two-component driven diffusive models: Symmetry and renormalization group perspectives

Pritha Dolai, Aditi Simha, Abhik Basu

We elucidate the universal spatiotemporal scaling properties of the time-dependent correlation functions in a class of two-component one-dimensional (1D) driven diffusive system that consists of two coupled asymmetric exclusion processes. By using a perturbative renormalization group framework, we show that the relevant scaling exponents have values same as those for the 1D Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation. We connect these universal scaling exponents with the symmetries of the model equations. We thus establish that these models belong to the 1D KPZ universality class.

Kardar-Parisi-Zhang dynamics in an open integrable system: beyond the spontaneous-symmetry-breaking ansatz

Guo-Qiang Wang, Chang-Ling Zou, Guang-Can Guo +1 more

The universality of dynamical scaling laws constitutes a cornerstone in the theoretical understanding of quantum many-body systems, particularly in non-equilibrium settings. Recent advancements have proposed a phenomenological ansatz based on spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) to unify the description of charge transport in open quantum systems. However, it remains unclear under which conditions it fails to capture the emergent hydrodynamics and if it does break down, whether nontrivial dynamics emerge. In this work we show that Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) dynamics in an open integrable model (the B3 model), rather than diffusion from SSB, emerges. We find that the B3 model is equivalent to two interacting asymmetric XXZ spin chains and the ansatz can only capture the influence of the inter-chain interactions. When the initial state is appropriate, the asymmetric XXZ structure dominates the dynamics, which gives KPZ scaling behavior even when the hopping rate becomes negative. Our work motivates theory of charge transport in open systems beyond the ansatz based on SSB.

Partial Yet Definite Emergence of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang Class in Isotropic Spin Chains

Kazumasa A. Takeuchi, Kazuaki Takasan, Ofer Busani +3 more

Integrable spin chains with a continuous non-Abelian symmetry, such as the one-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg model, show superdiffusive transport with little theoretical understanding. Although recent studies reported a surprising connection to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class in that case, this view was most recently questioned by discrepancies in full counting statistics. Here, by combining extensive numerical simulations of classical and quantum integrable isotropic spin chains with a framework developed by exact studies of the KPZ class, we characterize various two-point quantities that remain hitherto unexplored in spin chains, and find full agreement with KPZ scaling laws without adjustable parameters. This establishes the partial emergence of the KPZ class in integrable isotropic spin chains. Moreover, we reveal that the KPZ scaling laws are intact in the presence of an energy current, under the appropriate Galilean boost required by the propagation of spacetime correlation.
