Abstract

Quantum droplets (QDs) in weakly interacting ultracold quantum gases are typically characterized by mean-field theories incorporating Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) quantum fluctuations under simplified zero-range interaction assumptions. However, bridging these models to broader physical regimes like superfluid helium requires precise understanding of short-range interatomic interactions. Here, we investigate how finite-range interactions--next-order corrections to zero-range potentials--significantly alter QDs mechanics. Using a consistent effective theory, we derive an analytical equation of state (EOS) for three-dimensional bosonic mixtures under finite-range interactions at zero temperature. Leveraging the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation, we demonstrate that interspecies attraction facilitates bosonic pairing across components characterized by the non-perturbative parameter of $Δ$, leading to nonuniversal LHY terms that encode short-range interaction details while recovering previous universal QDs EOS in the zero-range limit. Extending superfluid hydrodynamic equations for two-component systems, we predict fractional frequency shifts in breathing modes induced by these nonuniversal terms. Experimental observation of these shifts would reveal critical insights into QDs dynamics and interatomic potential characteristics.

Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective field theory and the nonuniversal equation of state of an ultracold Bose gas

Yi Zhang, Zhaoxin Liang

The equation of state (EOS) serves as a cornerstone in elucidating the properties of quantum many-body systems. A recent highlight along this research line consists of the derivation of the nonuniversal Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) EOS for an ultracold quantum bosonic gas with finite-range interatomic interactions using one-loop effective path-integral field theory [Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 130402 (2017)]. The purpose of this work is to extend Salasnich's pioneering work to uncover beyond-LHY corrections to the EOS by employing the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis (CJT) effective-field theory, leveraging its two-loop approximation. To this end, we expand Salasnich's remarkable findings of EOS to the next leading order characterized by ${(\ensuremath{\rho}{a}_{\text{s}}^{3})}^{2}$, with $\ensuremath{\rho}$ and ${a}_{\text{s}}$ being the density and the $s$-wave scattering length. Notably, we derive analytical expressions for quantum depletion and chemical potential, representing the next-to-LHY corrections to nonuniversal EOS induced by finite-range effects. Moreover, we propose an experimental protocol of observing the nonuniversal next-to-LHY corrections to the EOS by calculating fractional frequency shifts in the breathing modes. The nonuniversal beyond-LHY EOS in this work paves the way of using LHY effects in quantum simulation experiments and for investigations beyond the LHY regime.

Role of Quantum Fluctuations in Phase Transitions of Ultra-Cold Bosonic Systems

Dr. Narendra Kumar Ravi Nath Choudhry

Quantum fluctuations play a pivotal role in determining the ground state properties and phase transitions of ultra-cold bosonic systems. This study presents a comprehensive theoretical investigation of fluctuation effects beyond mean-field theory in dilute Bose gases, examining their impact on the superfluid–Mott insulator transition, quantum droplet formation, and critical phenomena. Beginning with the Gross–Pitaevskii mean-field framework , we systematically incorporate quantum corrections through Bogoliubov theory, yielding the Lee–Huang–Yang (LHY) energy correction scaling as . The quantum depletion quantifies the fraction of atoms driven from the condensate by zero-point fluctuations. For the Bose–Hubbard model , quantum Monte Carlo simulations establish the superfluid–Mott insulator critical point at , shifted 15% from the mean-field prediction. Critical exponents and confirm 3D XY universality. Quantum droplets in binary mixtures are stabilized by the repulsive LHY correction against mean-field collapse, with equilibrium densities matching experimental observations in K mixtures. Finite-size scaling analysis and the Ginzburg criterion delineate regimes where fluctuation effects dominate. All theoretical predictions are validated against precision measurements in ultracold atomic gases.

Multicomponent one-dimensional quantum droplets across the mean-field stability regime

I. A. Englezos, Peter Schmelcher, S. I. Mistakidis

The Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) energy correction at the edge of the mean-field stability regime is known to give rise to beyond mean-field structures in a wide variety of systems. In this work, we analytically derive the LHY energy for two-, three- and four-component one-dimensional bosonic short-range interacting mixtures across the mean-field stability regime. For varying intercomponent attraction in the two-component setting, quantitative deviations from the original LHY treatment emerge being imprinted in the droplet saturation density and width. On the other hand, for repulsive interactions an unseen early onset of phase-separation occurs for both homonuclear and heteronuclear mixtures. Closed LHY expressions for the fully-symmetric three- and four-component mixtures, as well as for mixtures comprised of two identical components coupled to a third independent component are provided and found to host a plethora of mixed droplet states. Our results are expected to inspire future investigations in multicomponent systems for unveiling exotic self-bound states of matter and unravel their nonequilibrium quantum dynamics.

Quantum droplets in one-dimensional Bose-Bose mixtures: beyond the Lee-Huang-Yang description

Abdelâali Boudjemâa, Karima Abbas

Abstract The static and dynamic properties of self-bound quantum droplets in a one-dimensional Bose-Bose mixture are discussed in the spirit of the Hartree–Fock-Bogoliubov theory. This latter enables us to provide beyond the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) quantum corrections to the equation of state at both zero and finite temperatures. In the uniform case our results for the ground-state energy and the critical temperature are confirmed through comparison with Quantum Monte-Carlo simulation and with available theoretical results. The density profiles are supported by numerical simulations of the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation which selfconsistently includes higher-order terms originating from the normal and anomalous fluctuations under the local density approximation. We show that the density exhibits a dip near its center in the flat-top plateau region for large interspecies interactions. We exemplify the impact of the beyond LHY corrections on the spatiotemporal evolution of the self-bound droplet in the presence of excitation induced by periodic density modulation. It is found that higher-order corrections may lead to the formation of a train of small droplets. We then extend our study for the case of inhomogeneous droplets in quasi one-dimensional Bose mixtures.

Consistent Theory of Self-Bound Quantum Droplets with Bosonic Pairing

Hui Hu, Xia-Ji Liu

We revisit the Bogoliubov theory of quantum droplets proposed by Petrov [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 155302 (2015)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.115.155302] for an ultracold Bose-Bose mixture, where the mean-field collapse is stabilized by the Lee-Huang-Yang quantum fluctuations. We show that a loophole in Petrov's theory, i.e., the ignorance of the softening complex Bogoliubov spectrum, can be naturally removed by the introduction of bosonic pairing. The pairing leads to weaker mean-field attractions, and also a stronger Lee-Huang-Yang term in the case of unequal intraspecies interactions. As a result, the equilibrium density for the formation of self-bound droplets significantly decreases in the deep droplet regime, in agreement with a recent observation from diffusion Monte Carlo simulations. Our construction of a consistent Bogoliubov theory paves the way to understand the puzzling low critical number of small quantum droplets observed in the experiment [C. Cabrera et al., Science 359, 301 (2018)SCIEAS0036-807510.1126/science.aao5686].

Lee-Huang-Yang effects in the ultracold mixture of Na 23 and Rb 87 with attractive interspecies interactions

Zhichao Guo, Fan Jia, Lintao Li +4 more

The beyond-mean-field Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction is ubiquitous in dilute ultracold quantum gases. However, its effects are often elusive due to the typically much larger influence of the mean-field (MF) energy. In this work, we study an ultracold mixture of $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$ and $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ with tunable attractive interspecies interactions. The LHY effects manifest in the formation of self-bound quantum liquid droplets and the expansion dynamics of the gas-phase sample. A liquid-to-gas-phase diagram is obtained by measuring the critical atom numbers below which the self-bound behavior disappears. In stark contrast to trapped gas-phase condensates, the gas-phase mixture formed following the liquid-to-gas-phase transition shows an anomalous expansion featuring a larger release energy for increasing MF attractions.
