Modular Hamiltonian for the massive scalar field on the half line: a numerical approach

Abstract

A bstract We study the modular Hamiltonian of an interval for the ground state of a massive free scalar field on the half line with Robin boundary conditions, by employing a numerical method. When the interval is adjacent to the boundary, we find numerical evidence that the modular Hamiltonian is non-local, except for the limiting cases of the massless scalar satisfying either Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. When the interval is separated from the boundary, the numerical analysis indicates that the modular Hamiltonian is non-local for all these boundary conditions and any value of the mass.

Modular Hamiltonians for the massless Dirac field in the presence of a boundary

Mihail Mintchev, Erik Tonni C

A bstract We study the modular Hamiltonians of an interval for the massless Dirac fermion on the half-line. The most general boundary conditions ensuring the global energy conservation lead to consider two phases, where either the vector or the axial symmetry is preserved. In these two phases we derive the corresponding modular Hamiltonian in explicit form. Its density involves a bi-local term localised in two points of the interval, one conjugate to the other. The associated modular flows are also established. Depending on the phase, they mix fields with different chirality or charge that follow different modular trajectories. Accordingly, the modular flow preserves either the vector or the axial symmetry. We compute the two-point correlation functions along the modular flow and show that they satisfy the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger condition in both phases. The entanglement entropies are also derived.

Modular Hamiltonian in the semi infinite line. Part II. Dimensional reduction of Dirac fermions in spherically symmetric regions

Marina Huerta, Guido van der Velde

A bstract In this article, we extend our study on a new class of modular Hamiltonians on an interval attached to the origin on the semi-infinite line, introduced in a recent work dedicated to scalar fields. Here, we shift our attention to fermions and similarly to the scalar case, we investigate the modular Hamiltonians of theories which are obtained through dimensional reduction, this time, of a free massless Dirac field in d dimensions. By following the same methodology, we perform dimensional reduction on both the physical and modular Hamiltonians. This process enables us to establish a correspondence: we identify the modular Hamiltonian in an interval connected to the origin to the one obtained from the reduction of the modular Hamiltonian pertaining to the conformal parent theory on a sphere. Intriguingly, although the resulting one-dimensional theories lack conformal symmetry due to the presence of a term proportional to 1/ r , the corresponding modular Hamiltonians are local functions in the energy density. This phenomenon mirrors the well known behaviour observed in the conformal case and indicates the existence of a residual symmetry, characterized by a subset of the original conformal group. Furthermore, through an analysis of the spectrum of the modular Hamiltonians, we derive an analytic expression for the associated entanglement entropy. Our findings also enable us to successfully recover the conformal anomaly coefficient from the universal piece of the entropy in even dimensions, as well as the universal constant F term in d = 3, by extending the radial regularization scheme originally introduced by Srednicki to perform the sum over angular modes.

Reduced density matrix and entanglement Hamiltonian for a free real scalar field on an interval

Baranov, Mikhail A.

An exact result for the reduced density matrix on a finite interval for a $1+1$ dimensional free real scalar field in the ground state is presented. In the massless case, the Williamson decomposition of the appearing kernels is explicitly performed, which allows to reproduce the known result for the entanglement (modular) Hamiltonian and, for a small mass $M$ of the field, find the leading $\sim1/\ln M$ non-local corrections. In the opposite $M\to\infty$ case, it is argued that, up to terms $O(M^{-1/2})$, the entanglement Hamiltonian is local with the density being the Hamiltonian density spatially modulated by a triangular-shape function.

The massive modular Hamiltonian for a double cone

Daniela Cadamuro

The Tomita-Takesaki modular operator for local algebras plays an important role in quantum field theory, and more recently in the study of relative entropy. However, the explicit expression of this operator, except for the case of wedges, is difficult to describe mathematically. We have obtained instead numerical results for the form of the modular Hamiltonian for a double cone in a massive scalar free field in (1+1)- and (3+1)-dimensional Minkowski space, which shows how it differs from the wedge case, in particular regarding the dependence of the modular Hamiltonian on the mass of the field.

Non-local modular flows across deformed null-cuts

Guan-Cheng Lu, Huajia Wang

A bstract Modular flows probe important aspects of the entanglement structures, especially those of QFTs, in a dynamical framework. Despite the expected non-local nature in the general cases, the majority of explicitly understood examples feature local space-time trajectories under modular flows. In this work, we study a particular class of non-local modular flows. They are associated with the relativistic vacuum state and sub-regions whose boundaries lie on a planar null-surface. They satisfy a remarkable algebraic property known as the half-sided modular inclusion, and as a result the modular Hamiltonians are exactly known in terms of the stress tensor operators. To be explicit, we focus on the simplest QFT of a massive or massless free scalar in 1 + 2 dimensions. We obtain explicit expressions for the generators. They can be separated into a sum of local and non-local terms showing certain universal pattern. The preservation of von Neumann algebra under modular flow works in a subtle way for the non-local terms. We derive a differential-integral equation for the finite modular flow, which can be analyzed in perturbation theory of small distance deviating from the entanglement boundary, and re-summation can be performed in appropriate limits. Comparison with the general expectation of modular flows in such limits are discussed.

Modular evolutions and causality in two-dimensional conformal field theory

Dobrica Jovanovic, Mihail Mintchev, Erik Tonni C

A bstract In two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFT) in Minkowski spacetime, we study the spacetime distance between two events along two distinct modular trajectories. When the spatial line is bipartite by a single interval, we consider both the ground state and the state at finite different temperatures for the left and right moving excitations. For the free massless Dirac field in the ground state, the bipartition of the line given by the union of two disjoint intervals is also investigated. The modular flows corresponding to connected subsystems preserve relativistic causality. Locality along the modular flows of some fields is explored by evaluating their (anti-)commutators. In particular, the bilocal nature of the modular Hamiltonian of two disjoint intervals for the massless Dirac field provide multiple trajectories leading to Dirac delta contributions in the (anti-)commutators even when the initial points belong to different intervals, thus being spacelike separated.
