Comparing the elliptic Ruijsenaars–Schneider model to the finite volume sine-Gordon theory

Abstract

We compare the spectrum of the elliptic Ruijsenaars–Schneider model with the finite-size spectrum of the sine-Gordon model, highlighting both their similarities and differences. Our analysis focuses on the two-particle sector in the center-of-mass frame. At the free point, we carry out an analytic comparison, while at generic couplings we employ non-perturbative numerical calculations based on the truncated Hilbert space method adapted to difference operators. To benchmark this numerical approach, we first study the trigonometric limit, where analytic results are available. We then compare the Bethe–Yang momentum quantization conditions, derived from infinite-volume scattering phases, with the exact finite-volume solutions. We find that these conditions hold exactly in the rational and trigonometric cases, but acquire finite-size corrections in the hyperbolic and elliptic cases, however, these corrections are different in quantum field theories and in many body systems.

Approaching the self-dual point of the sinh-Gordon model

Robert Konik, Márton Lájer, Giuseppe Mussardo

Abstract One of the most striking but mysterious properties of the sinh-Gordon model (ShG) is the b → 1/b self-duality of its S-matrix, of which there is no trace in its Lagrangian formulation. Here b is the coupling appearing in the model’s eponymous hyperbolic cosine present in its Lagrangian, cosh(bϕ). In this paper we develop truncated spectrum methods (TSMs) for studying the sinh-Gordon model at a finite volume as we vary the coupling constant. We obtain the expected results for b ≪ 1 and intermediate values of b, but as the self-dual point b = 1 is approached, the basic application of the TSM to the ShG breaks down. We find that the TSM gives results with a strong cutoff Ec dependence, which disappears according only to a very slow power law in Ec. Standard renormalization group strategies — whether they be numerical or analytic — also fail to improve upon matters here. We thus explore three strategies to address the basic limitations of the TSM in the vicinity of b = 1. In the first, we focus on the small-volume spectrum. We attempt to understand how much of the physics of the ShG is encoded in the zero mode part of its Hamiltonian, in essence how ‘quantum mechanical’ vs ‘quantum field theoretic’ the problem is. In the second, we identify the divergencies present in perturbation theory and perform their resummation using a supra-Borel approximate. In the third approach, we use the exact form factors of the model to treat the ShG at one value of b as a perturbation of a ShG at a different coupling. In the light of this work, we argue that the strong coupling phase b > 1 of the Lagrangian formulation of model may be different from what is naïvely inferred from its S-matrix. In particular, we present an argument that the theory is massless for b > 1.

On the finite volume expectation values of local operators in the sine-Gordon model

Árpád Hegedűs

In this paper we present sets of linear integral equations which make possible to compute the finite volume expectation values of the trace of the stress energy tensor (Θ) and the U ( 1 ) current ( J μ ) in any eigenstate of the Hamiltonian of the sine-Gordon model. The solution of these equations in the large volume limit allows one to get exact analytical formulas for the expectation values in the Bethe-Yang limit. These analytical formulas are used to test an earlier conjecture for the Bethe-Yang limit of expectation values in non-diagonally scattering theories. The analytical tests have been carried out upto three particle states and gave agreement with the conjectured formula, provided the definition of polarized symmetric diagonal form-factors is modified appropriately. Nevertheless, we point out that our results provide only a partial confirmation of the conjecture, and further investigations are necessary to confirm all of its subtleties. The most important missing piece in the confirmation is the mathematical proof of the finiteness of the symmetric diagonal limit of form-factors in a non-diagonally scattering theory.

Truncated Hilbert space approach to the 2d ϕ 4 theory

Zoltán Bajnok, Márton Lájer

We apply the massive analogue of the truncated conformal space approach to study the two dimensional φ4 theory in finite volume. We focus on the broken phase and determine the finite size spectrum of the model numerically. We interpret the results in terms of the Bethe- Yang spectrum, from which we extract the infinite volume masses and scattering matrices for various couplings. We compare these results against semiclassical analysis and perturbation theory. We also analyze the critical point of the model and confirm that it is in the Ising universality class.

On-shell renormalization of sine-Gordon by the quantum inverse scattering method

Francesco Beccarini, Claudio Conti

In the quantum inverse scattering method, the sine-Gordon model is solved on a lattice, and its continuum and infinite-volume limits become uniform only after the length of the box is rescaled. We show that this rescaling, supplemented by an on-shell condition, defines a renormalization scheme. The whole dependence on the cut-off is absorbed into a factor $Z_L$ multiplying the length of the box, with an exponent fixed by the scaling dimension of the vertex operator; neither the field nor the coupling $β$ is renormalized, no subtraction scale is introduced, and the mass parameter receives a finite renormalization, fixed by requiring that the lightest breather has the mass of the boson in the linearized theory. The soliton and breather masses follow from the eigenvalues of the monodromy operator as functions of parameters that do not run, and reduce to the classical and semiclassical results as $β\rightarrow0$. In particular, the mass ratios are produced directly from the regularized construction, while the relation between the lattice parameters and the physical scale is absorbed into $Z_L$ and never needs to be computed. The scheme is a reparameterization of the theory which makes explicit the interplay between integrability and renormalization. We compare it with Coleman's normal ordering and with conformal perturbation theory, and we argue that it extends to ultralocal integrable theories with a massive spectrum, possibly including asymptotically free models that admit an ultralocal lattice regularization.

Finite Volume Spectrum of Sine-Gordon Model and its Restrictions

Giovanni Feverati

In this thesis, we review recent progresses on Nonlinear Integral Equation approach to finite size effects in two dimensional integrable quantum field theories, with emphasis to Sine-Gordon/Massive Thirring model and restrictions to minimal models perturbed by $Φ_{1,3}$. Exact calculations of the dependence of energy levels on the size are presented for vacuum and many excited states.

Lattice approach to finite volume form-factors of the Massive Thirring (Sine-Gordon) model

Árpád Hegedűs

In this paper we demonstrate, that the light-cone lattice approach for the Massive-Thirring (sine-Gordon) model, through the quantum inverse scattering method, admits an appropriate framework for computing the finite volume form-factors of local operators of the model. In this work we compute the finite volume diagonal matrix elements of the U(1) conserved current in the pure soliton sector of the theory. Based on the systematic large volume expansion of our results, we conjecture an exact expression for the finite volume expectation values of local operators in pure soliton states. At large volume in leading order these expectation values have the same form as in purely elastic scattering theories, but exponentially small corrections differ from previous Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz conjectures of purely elastic scattering theories.
