Abstract

Non-Hermitian PT-symmetric models have been extensively studied in recent years. Following the seminal work that reduced classical random matrix ensembles to a tridiagonal form, several efforts have aimed to generalize this framework to non-Hermitian extensions of the so-called \b{eta}-ensembles. In particular, while the transition of eigenvalues from the real axis to the complex plane has been well characterized for the \b{eta}-Hermite ensemble under symmetry breaking, the behavior of the \b{eta}-Laguerre ensemble in a similar non-Hermitian setting remains less understood. In this work, we investigate an ensemble of unstable matrices isospectral to the \b{eta}-Laguerre ensemble. Introducing a small non-Hermitian perturbation breaks the symmetry and drives the eigenvalues into the complex plane. We derive analytical expressions for the loci of complex-conjugate eigenvalue pairs, which organize into a balloon-like structure in the complex plane, followed by a discrete finite line of real eigenvalues. The asymptotic behavior of these eigenvalues is analyzed in the large matrix-size limit, and our theoretical predictions are supported by numerical simulations.

A numerical and analytical investigation into non-Hermitian Hamiltonians

Gert Jermia Cornelus Wessels

In this thesis we aim to show that the Schrödinger equation, which is a boundary eigenvalue problem, can have a discrete and real energy spectrum (eigenvalues) even when the Hamiltonian is non-Hermitian.After a brief introduction into non-Hermiticity, we will focus on solving the Schrödinger equation with a special class of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, namely PTsymmetric Hamiltonians.PT -symmetric Hamiltonians have been discussed by various authors [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] with some of them focusing specifically on obtaining the real and discrete energy spectrum.Various methods for solving this problematic Schrödinger equation will be considered. After starting with perturbation theory, we will move on to numerical methods.Three different categories of methods will be discussed.First there is the shooting method based on a Runge-Kutta solver.Next, we investigate various implementations of the spectral method. Finally, we will look at the Riccati-Padé method, which is a numerical implemented analytical method.PT -symmetric potentials need to be solved along a contour in the complex plane. We will propose modifications to the numerical methods to handle this. After solving the widely documented PT -symmetric Hamiltonian H = p 2 -(ix) N with these methods, we give a discussion and comparison of the obtained results. Finally, we solve another PT -symmetric potential, illustrating the use of paths in the complex plane to obtain a real and discrete spectrum and their influence on the results.

Pseudo-Hermitian description ofPT-symmetric systems defined on a complex contour

Ali Mostafazadeh

We describe a method that allows for a practical application of the theory of pseudo-Hermitian operators to PT -symmetric systems defined on a complex contour. We apply this method to study the Hamiltonians H = p 2 + x 2 (i x ) ν with ν (−2, ∞ ) that are defined along the corresponding anti-Stokes lines. In particular, we reveal the intrinsic non-Hermiticity of H for the cases that ν is an even integer, so that H = p 2 ± x 2+ν , and give a proof of the discreteness of the spectrum of H for all ν (−2, ∞ ). Furthermore, we study the consequences of defining a square-well Hamiltonian on a wedge-shaped complex contour. This yields a PT -symmetric system with a finite number of real eigenvalues. We present a comprehensive analysis of this system within the framework of pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics. We also outline a direct pseudo-Hermitian treatment of PT -symmetric systems defined on a complex contour which clarifies the underlying mathematical structure of the formulation of PT -symmetric quantum mechanics based on the charge-conjugation operator. Our results provide conclusive evidence that pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics provides a complete description of general PT -symmetric systems regardless of whether they are defined along the real line or a complex contour.

Parametric correlations in non-Hermitian quantum chaos: random matrix approach

Yan V. Fyodorov, Bertrand Lacroix-A-Chez-Toine

Motivated by the surge of interest in statistics of non-Hermitian random matrices as a framework for description of universal characteristics of dissipative chaotic quantum many-body systems, we address the problem of characterizing the parametric correlations of spectral densities. Considering parameter-dependent ensemble of complex Ginibre matrices we derive an explicit, closed-form expression for the parametric number covariance in the systems of symmetry class $\mathbf{A}$ for eigenvalues in a circular domain containing on average a finite number of eigenvalues in the spectral bulk. This behavior is expected to be universal, as further supported by numerical evidence for the real Ginibre ensemble, non-Hermitian Bernoulli Wigner matrices and bi-unitarily invariant ensembles. We also discuss a relation between parametric correlations of spectral densities and the distribution of the so-called eigenvector non-orthogonality factor, which attracted considerable interest in recent years.

Duality between the level statistics of Hermitian and non-Hermitian random matrices

Ze Chen, Zhenyu Xiao, Yifei Liu +1 more

The complex spectral statistics of non-Hermitian random matrices provide a standard diagnostic of dissipative quantum chaos. Yet an analytical understanding of how symmetry enriches these universal correlations remains limited. We establish an exact duality between the spectral statistics of Hermitian and non-Hermitian random matrices in the limit of large matrix size. This duality resolves a longstanding analytical problem by yielding the previously unknown eigenvalue pair-correlation functions for complex symmetric (class AI$^\dagger$) and complex self-dual matrices (class AII$^\dagger$), completing the analytical description of bulk pair correlations in the non-Hermitian threefold way. It further gives closed-form spectral densities near the origin for seven additional symmetry classes. Numerical tests in interacting and dissipative quantum models support the universality of these predictions beyond Gaussian ensembles. The duality suggests a deeper connection between chaos in closed and open quantum systems.

Pseudo-Hermitian Description of PT-Symmetric Systems Defined on a Complex Contour

Mostafazadeh, Ali

We describe a method that allows for a practical application of the theory of pseudo-Hermitian operators to PT-symmetric systems defined on a complex contour. We apply this method to study the Hamiltonians $H=p^2+x^2(ix)^ν$ with $ν\in(-2,\infty)$ that are defined along the corresponding anti-Stokes lines. In particular, we reveal the intrinsic non-Hermiticity of $H$ for the cases that $ν$ is an even integer, so that $H=p^2\pm x^{2+ν}$, and give a proof of the discreteness of the spectrum of $H$ for all $ν\in(-2,\infty)$. Furthermore, we study the consequences of defining a square-well Hamiltonian on a wedge-shaped complex contour. This yields a PT-symmetric system with a finite number of real eigenvalues. Pseudo-Hermiticity for a class of nondiagonalizable Hamiltonians

Ali Mostafazadeh

We give two characterization theorems for pseudo-Hermitian (possibly nondiagonalizable) Hamiltonians with a discrete spectrum that admit a block-diagonalization with finite-dimensional diagonal blocks. In particular, we prove that for such an operator H the following statements are equivalent: (1) H is pseudo-Hermitian; (2) the spectrum of H consists of real and/or complex-conjugate pairs of eigenvalues and the geometric multiplicity and the dimension of the diagonal blocks for the complex-conjugate eigenvalues are identical; (3) H is Hermitian with respect to a positive-semidefinite inner product. We further discuss the relevance of our findings for the merging of a complex-conjugate pair of eigenvalues of diagonalizable pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians in general, and the PT-symmetric Hamiltonians and the effective Hamiltonian for a certain closed FRW minisuperspace quantum cosmological model in particular.
