Abstract

Although BCS wave functions for superconductors under periodic boundary conditions are well established, obtaining an explicit form of the many-body BCS wave function under open boundary condition is usually a nontrivial problem. In this work, we construct the exact BCS ground-state wave function of a one-dimensional spin-$\frac12$ superconductor with $p+is$ pairing symmetry under open boundary conditions for special sets of parameters. The spin magnetization on the edges is calculated explicitly using the obtained wave function. Our work is useful for obtaining deeper understandings of open $p+ is$ superconducting chains on a wave-function level.

Analytic ground state wave functions of mean-field px+ipy superconductors with vortices and boundaries

Zhiyuan Wang, Kaden R. A. Hazzard

We study Read and Green's mean-field model of the spinless ${p}_{x}+i{p}_{y}$ superconductor [N. Read and D. Green, Phys. Rev. B 61, 10267 (2000)] at a special set of parameters where we find the analytic expressions for the topologically degenerate ground states and the Majorana modes, including in finite systems with edges and in the presence of an arbitrary number of vortices. The wave functions of these ground states are similar (but not always identical) to the Moore-Read Pfaffian states proposed for the $\ensuremath{\nu}=\frac{5}{2}$ fractional quantum Hall system, which are interpreted as the $p$-wave superconducting states of composite fermions. The similarity in the long-wavelength universal properties is expected from previous work, but at the special point studied herein the wave functions are exact even for short-range, nonuniversal properties. As an application of these results, we show how to obtain the non-Abelian statistics of the vortex Majorana modes by explicitly calculating the analytic continuation of the ground state wave functions when vortices are adiabatically exchanged, an approach different from the previous one based on universal arguments. Our results are also useful for constructing particle-number-conserving (and interacting) Hamiltonians with exact projected mean-field states.

Exact Wave Functions in Superconductivity

Daniel Charles Mattis, Élliott H. Lieb

The ground-state wave function and some of the excited states of the BCS reduced Hamiltonian are found. In the limit of large volume, the boundary and continuity conditions on the exact wave function lead directly to the equations which Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer found by a variational technique. It is also shown in what sense the BCS trial wave function may be considered asymptotically exact in this limit. Finite-volume corrections are included in an appendix, and explicit calculations are carried out for a one-step model of the kinetic energy which has possible applications to the problem of the finite nucleus.

Open spin chain realization of a topological defect in a one-dimensional Ising model: Boundary and bulk symmetry

Yoshiki Fukusumi, Shumpei Iino

We study the realizations of topological defects in a one-dimensional quantum Ising model with an open boundary condition at criticality. Applying the construction discussed in M. Hauru, G. Evenbly, W. W. Ho, D. Gaiotto, and G. Vidal, Phys. Rev. B 94, 115125 (2016), we prove that the Ising model on an open chain with multiple topological defects can be transformed to the same model with boundary magnetic fields and noninteracting boundary degrees of freedom. This results in the appearance of a linear combination of Cardy states, which can be interpreted as an edge state of the spin or fermion chain. We show that this edge state with the large boundary entropy can be protected under bulk perturbation, whereas it is fragile to a boundary perturbation. Our formulation suggests the existence of nontrivial edge physics under the existence of topological defects and opens many interesting questions for future analysis related to boundary and bulk physics.

One-dimensional extended Hubbard model with spin-triplet pairing ground states

Akinori Tanaka

Abstract We show that the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model has saturated ferromagnetic ground states with the spin-triplet electron pair condensation in a certain range of parameters. The ground state wave functions with fixed electron numbers are explicitly obtained. We also construct two ground states in which both the spin-rotation and the gauge symmetries are broken, and show that these states are transferred from one to the other by applying the edge operators. The edge operators are reduced to the Majorana fermions in a special case. These symmetry breaking ground states are shown to be stabilized by a superconducting mean field Hamiltonian which is related to the Kitaev chain with the charge–charge interaction.

Correlation functions for open XXZ spin 1/2 quantum chains with unparallel boundary magnetic fields

Giuliano Niccoli, V. Terras

Abstract In this paper we continue our derivation of the correlation functions of open quantum spin 1/2 chains with unparallel magnetic fields on the edges; this time for the more involved case of the XXZ spin 1/2 chains. We develop our study in the framework of the quantum separation of variables, which gives us both the complete spectrum characterization and simple scalar product formulae for separate states, including transfer matrix eigenstates. Here, we leave the boundary magnetic field in the first site of the chain completely arbitrary, and we fix the boundary field in the last site N of the chain to be a specific value along the z -direction. This is a natural first choice for the unparallel boundary magnetic fields. We prove that under these special boundary conditions, on the one side, we have a simple enough complete spectrum description in terms of homogeneous Baxter like TQ -equation. On the other side, we prove a simple enough description of the action of a basis of local operators on transfer matrix eigenstates as linear combinations of separate states. Thanks to these results, we achieve our main goal to derive correlation functions for a set of local operators both for the finite and half-infinite chains, with multiple integral formulae in this last case.

Magnetization ofS=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains

Shoji Yamamoto, Seiji Miyashita

Full magnetization curves of S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with periodic and open boundaries are investigated by a quantum Monte Carlo method. The boundary condition has a significant effect on the magnetization process especially in the field range where the Zeeman energy is less than the Haldane gap. The magnetization of the periodic chain in the range is strongly suppressed at low temperatures because the ground state is nonmagnetic. On the other hand, the magnetic ground of the open chain bring about finite magnetization. The difference between both the magnetization curves is also investigated in detail by subtracting the magnetization of the periodic chain with L spins from one of the open chains with L+1 spins. It agrees well with the double of the Brillouin function for S=1/2, rather than the Brillouun function for S=1.
