Abstract

We analyse the momentum distribution of a three-dimensional Fermi gas in the mean-field scaling regime in a trial state that was recently proven to reproduce the Gell-Mann-Brueckner correlation energy for Coulomb potentials. For a class of potentials including the Coulomb potential we show that the momentum distribution is given by a step profile corrected by a random phase approximation contribution. Moreover, for potentials with summable Fourier transform we provide optimal error bounds for the deviation from the random phase approximation. This refines a recent analysis by two of the authors to the physically most relevant potentials and to momenta closer to the Fermi surface. The proof relies on a double bootstrap method, improved over the earlier analysis to estimate the momentum distribution both globally over all momenta and pointwise. We argue that a similar result can be expected to hold also for the ground state.

Momentum distribution of a Fermi gas in the random phase approximation

Niels Benedikter, Sascha Lill

We consider a system of interacting fermions on the three-dimensional torus in a mean-field scaling limit. Our objective is computing the occupation number of the Fourier modes in a trial state obtained through the random phase approximation (in its collective bosonization formulation) for the ground state. We prove that the trial state’s momentum distribution has a jump discontinuity, i.e., a well-defined Fermi surface. Moreover the Fermi momentum does not depend on the interaction potential (it is universal). Our result shows that the random phase approximation in the mean-field scaling limit is in principle sufficiently precise to identify a non-trivial Fermi liquid phase.

Upper Bound on the Correlation Energy of a Dense Fermi Gas in the Thermodynamic Limit

Niels Benedikter, Sascha Lill, Marcello Porta +1 more

We prove that the random phase approximation provides an upper bound on the correlation energy of a three-dimensional, weakly interacting, Fermi gas in the thermodynamic limit at high density. More precisely, we consider a mean-field scaling regime where the kinetic and interaction Hamiltonian are scaled by $ρ^{-2/3}$ and $ρ^{-1}$, respectively. We use a correlated trial state constructed through a quasi-bosonic Bogoliubov transformation of collective particle--hole excitations associated to patches on the Fermi surface. Key of the proof is to control the position-space localization of the collective excitations. Combined with an iterated Duhamel expansion of the expectation values of (localized) particle number operators we obtain extensive estimates, which justify the reduction to an effective quadratic Hamiltonian and its approximate diagonalization.

The Ground State Energy of a Mean-Field Fermi Gas in Two Dimensions

Gregorio Casadei, Sascha Lill

We rigorously establish a formula for the correlation energy of a two-dimensional Fermi gas in the mean-field regime for potentials whose Fourier transform $\hat{V}$ satisfies $\hat{V}(\cdot) | \cdot | \in \ell^1$. Further, we establish the analogous upper bound for $\hat{V}(\cdot)^2 | \cdot |^{1 + \varepsilon} \in \ell^1$, which includes the Coulomb potential $\hat{V}(k) \sim |k|^{-2}$. The proof is based on an approximate bosonization using slowly growing patches around the Fermi surface. In contrast to recent proofs in the three-dimensional case, we need a refined analysis of low-energy excitations, as they are less numerous, but carry larger contributions.

The correlation energy of the electron gas in the mean-field regime

Martin Ravn Christiansen, Christian Hainzl, Phan Thành Nam

We prove a rigorous lower bound on the correlation energy of interacting fermions in the mean-field regime for a wide class of singular interactions, including the Coulomb potential. Combined with the upper bound obtained by Christiansen, Hainzl, and Nam [Comm. Math. Phys. 401 (2023), pp. 1469–1529], our result establishes an analogue of the Gell-Mann–Brueckner formula c 1 ρ log ⁡ ( ρ ) + c 2 ρ c_{1}\rho \log \left (\rho \right )+c_{2}\rho for the correlation energy of the electron gas in the high-density limit. Moreover, our analysis allows us to go beyond mean-field scaling while still covering the same class of potentials.

Collective behaviors of an electron gas in the mean-field regime

Dong Hao Ou Yang

In this paper, we study the momentum distribution of an electron gas in a $3$-dimensional torus. The goal is to compute the occupation number of Fourier modes for some trial state obtained through random phase approximation. We obtain the mean-field analogue of momentum distribution formulas for electron gas in [Daniel and Voskov, Phys. Rev. \textbf{120}, (1960)] in high density limit and [Lam, Phys. Rev. \textbf{3}, (1971)] at metallic density. The analysis in the present paper is majorly based on the work [Christiansen, Hainzl, Nam, Comm. Math. Phys. \textbf{401}, (2023)]. Our findings are related to recent results obtained independently by Benedikter, Lill and Naidu, and the analysis applies to a general class of singular potentials rather than just the Coulomb case.

Optimal Upper Bound for the Correlation Energy of a Fermi Gas in the Mean-Field Regime

Niels Benedikter, Phan Thành Nam, Marcello Porta +2 more

While Hartree-Fock theory is well established as a fundamental approximation for interacting fermions, it has been unclear how to describe corrections to it due to many-body correlations. In this paper we start from the Hartree-Fock state given by plane waves and introduce collective particle-hole pair excitations. These pairs can be approximately described by a bosonic quadratic Hamiltonian. We use Bogoliubov theory to construct a trial state yielding a rigorous Gell-Mann-Brueckner-type upper bound to the ground state energy. Our result justifies the random-phase approximation in the mean-field scaling regime, for repulsive, regular interaction potentials.
