Strong-coupling Bose polarons in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Fabian Grusdt, Richard Schmidt, Yulia E. Shchadilova +1 more

We use a nonperturbative renormalization group approach to develop a unified picture of the Bose polaron problem, where a mobile impurity is strongly interacting with a surrounding Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). A detailed theoretical analysis of the phase diagram is presented and the polaron-to-molecule transition is discussed. For attractive polarons we argue that a description in terms of an effective Fr\"ohlich Hamiltonian with renormalized parameters is possible. Its strong-coupling regime is realized close to a Feshbach resonance, where we predict a sharp increase of the effective mass. Already for weaker interactions, before the polaron mass diverges, we predict a transition to a regime where states exist below the polaron energy and the attractive polaron is no longer the ground state. On the repulsive side of the Feshbach resonance we recover the repulsive polaron, which has a finite lifetime because it can decay into low-lying molecular states. We show for the entire range of couplings that the polaron energy has logarithmic corrections in comparison with predictions by the mean-field approach. We demonstrate that they are a consequence of the polaronic mass renormalization which is due to quantum fluctuations of correlated phonons in the polaron cloud.

Repulsive Fermi polarons with negative effective mass

Wenliang Li, Xiaoling Cui

A recent experiment at the European Laboratory for Non-Linear Spectroscopy (LENS) on a three-dimensional (3D) Fermi gas has reported a negative effective mass (${m}^{*}<0$) for Fermi polarons in the strongly repulsive regime. There naturally arises a question of whether the negative ${m}^{*}$ is a precursor of the instability towards phase separation (or itinerant ferromagnetism). In this paper, we make use of the exact solutions to study the ground state and excitation properties of repulsive Fermi polarons in one dimension, which also can exhibit a negative ${m}^{*}$ in the super-Tonks-Girardeau regime. By analyzing the total spin, quasimomentum distribution, and pair correlations, we conclude that the negative ${m}^{*}$ is irrelevant to the instability towards ferromagnetism or phase separation but rather an intrinsic feature of collective excitations for fermions in the strongly repulsive regime. Surprisingly, for large and negative ${m}^{*}$, such an excitation is accompanied with a spin-density modulation when the majority fermions move closer to the impurity rather than being repelled far away, contrary to the picture of phase separation. These results shed light on the recent observation of negative ${m}^{*}$ in the 3D repulsive Fermi polarons.

Mediated Interactions between Fermi Polarons in the Strongly Interacting Regime

Renato Pessoa, S. A. Vitiello, Luis A. Peña Ardila

Mediated interactions between quasiparticles lie at the heart of Landau Fermi-liquid theory, yet their behavior in the strongly correlated regime is not fully understood. Motivated by recent experiments [Nat. Phys. 20, 68--73 (2024)], we investigate mediated interactions between quasiparticles emerging from a Fermi sea---Fermi polarons---using zero-temperature quantum Monte Carlo methods. Our main result is that the Landau interaction between polarons remains repulsive in the strongly interacting regime for any coupling strength in the polaronic branch, in contrast to the downward trend observed experimentally near resonance. Deep in the short-range universal regime, our results are insensitive to the microscopic details of the interaction potential, providing robust evidence for the sign of the ground-state induced interaction. In addition, we determine the real-space interaction between static impurities, recovering a Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY)-like behavior at weak coupling and the nonperturbative Born-Oppenheimer result at strong coupling. More broadly, our results establish a microscopic benchmark for how Landau quasiparticle interactions survive beyond the perturbative regime of strongly correlated quantum matter.
