Dynamics of Cu2O Rydberg Excitons -Kerr-Effect and Quantum Beats

Abstract

We investigate the nonlinear refraction and the nonlinear Kerr phase shift which are due to Rydberg excitons induced in Cu2O crystal by short-time pulses. We observe the phenomenon of quantum beats, analogous to that observed in exciton emission spectra, obtained in the same conditions. The calculated temporal evolution show dependence on the exciton state number, the applied laser power, and quantities related to dissipative processes.

Self-Kerr Effect across the Yellow Rydberg Series of Excitons in Cu2O

We investigate the nonlinear refraction induced by Rydberg excitons in Cu_{2}O. Using a high-precision interferometry imaging technique that spatially resolves the nonlinear phase shift, we observe significant shifts at extremely low laser intensity near each exciton resonance. From this, we derive the nonlinear index n_{2}, present the n_{2} spectrum for principal quantum numbers n≥5, and report large n_{2} values of order 10^{-3} mm^{2}/mW. Moreover, we observe a rapid saturation of the Kerr nonlinearity and find that the saturation intensity I_{sat} decreases as n^{-7}. We explain this with the Rydberg blockade mechanism, whereby giant Rydberg interactions limit the exciton density, resulting in a maximum phase shift of 0.5 rad in our setup.

Nonlinear optical properties and Kerr nonlinearity of Rydberg excitons in Cu2O quantum wells

David Ziemkiewicz, G. Czajkowski, Karol Karpiński +1 more

The quantum confinement of Rydberg excitons (REs) in quantum structures opens the way towards considering nonlinear interactions in such systems. We present a theoretical calculation of optical functions in the case of a nonlinear coupling between REs in a quantum well with an electromagnetic wave. Using the real density matrix approach (RDMA), the analytical expressions for a linear and nonlinear absorption are derived and numerical calculations for ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}\mathrm{O}$ quantum wells are performed. The results indicate the conditions in which quantum well confinement states can be observed in linear and nonlinear optical spectra. The Kerr nonlinearity and self-phase modulation in such a system are studied. The effect of the Rydberg blockade and the associated optical bleaching are also discussed and confronted with available experimental data.

We investigate the nonlinear refraction induced by Rydberg excitons in $\mathrm{Cu_2O}$. Using a high-precision interferometry imaging technique that spatially resolves the nonlinear phase shift, we observe significant shifts at extremely low laser intensity near each exciton resonance. From this, we derive the nonlinear index $\mathrm{n_2}$, present the $\mathrm{n_2}$ spectrum for $n\geq 5$ and report large $\mathrm{n_2}$ values of order $10^{-3}$ mm$^2$/mW. Quantum beats in excitons in Cu2O

A. I. Bobrysheva, M. I. Shmiglyuk, V. Pavlov

A theoretical study is carried out of quantum beats (QB) in the time-dependent intensities of absorption of a test pulse and of spontaneous luminescence in a Cu2O crystal under conditions of double optical resonance. It is assumed that pumping is effected by a CO2-laser pulse which dynamically couples the exciton levels 1s(Γ 5 + ) and 2p(Γ 4 − ,Γ 5 − ,Γ 3 − Γ 2 − ) and splits them into two or three pairs of quasi-energy levels. The frequency of the test pulse is in resonance with the frequency Γ 5 + of the exciton. The corresponding intensities for various directions of the electric vector of the pump field E L, the polarization vector ξ, and the wave vector q of the test pulse are obtained. The frequency of the quantum beats is twice the Rabi frequency, which for different values of E L, ξ and q contains different sets of matrix elements of the dipole transitions between the levels 1s(Γ 5 + ) and 2p(Γ 4 − ,Γ 5 − ,Γ 3 − Γ 2 − ). Thus, by measuring the period of the quantum beats it is possible to determine the unknown matrix elements of the indicated transitions.

Quantum Beats of Excitons in Cu2O at Double Optical Resonance

M. I. Shmiglyuk, A. I. Bobrysheva, V. Pavlov

The quantum beats (QB) in the time-dependent absorption intensity of the probe pulse and the spontaneous luminescence one in Cu2O crystal at the condition of double optical resonance are studied theoretically. It is assumed that the pump is performed by the CO2 laser pulse, which couples dynamically the 1s (Γ 5 + ) and 2p (Γ 4 - , Γ 5 - , Γ 3 - , Γ 2 - ) excitonic states and leads to their splitting into two or three quasienergy levels. The frequency of the probe pulse is in the region of the Γ 5 + exciton resonance. The respective intensities for different directions of the electric field E L of the pump, the polarization ξ of the probe pulse, and the observation q are obtained. The QB take place with the doubled Raby frequency, which at different E L , ξ, and q includes different sets of matrix elements of dipole transitions between 1s (Γ 5 + ) and 2p (Γ 4 - , Γ 5 - , Γ 3 - , Γ 2 - ) levels. These unknown matrix elements can be obtained, measuring the period of the QB.

Nonlinear Rydberg exciton-polaritons in Cu2O microcavities

M. N. Makhonin, Anthonin Delphan, Kok Wee Song +13 more

Abstract Rydberg excitons (analogues of Rydberg atoms in condensed matter systems) are highly excited bound electron-hole states with large Bohr radii. The interaction between them as well as exciton coupling to light may lead to strong optical nonlinearity, with applications in sensing and quantum information processing. Here, we achieve strong effective photon–photon interactions (Kerr-like optical nonlinearity) via the Rydberg blockade phenomenon and the hybridisation of excitons and photons forming polaritons in a Cu2O-filled microresonator. Under pulsed resonant excitation polariton resonance frequencies are renormalised due to the reduction of the photon-exciton coupling with increasing exciton density. Theoretical analysis shows that the Rydberg blockade plays a major role in the experimentally observed scaling of the polariton nonlinearity coefficient as ∝ n4.4±1.8 for principal quantum numbers up to n = 7. Such high principal quantum numbers studied in a polariton system for the first time are essential for realisation of high Rydberg optical nonlinearities, which paves the way towards quantum optical applications and fundamental studies of strongly correlated photonic (polaritonic) states in a solid state system.
