Abstract

The spin-boson (SB) model is a standard prototype for quantum dissipation, which we generalize in this work, to explore the dissipative effects on a one-dimensional spin-orbit (SO) coupled particle in the presence of a sub-ohmic bath. We analyze this model by extending the well-known variational polaron approach, revealing a localization transition accompanied by an intriguing change in the spectrum, for which the doubly degenerate minima evolves to a single minimum at zero momentum as the system-bath coupling increases. For translational invariant system with conserved momentum, a continuous magnetization transition occurs, whereas the ground state changes discontinuously. We further investigate the transition of the ground state in the presence of harmonic confinement, which effectively models a quantum dot-like nanostructure under the influence of the environment. In both the scenarios, the entanglement entropy of the spin-sector can serve as a marker for these transitions. Interestingly, for the trapped system, a cat-like superposition state corresponds to maximum entanglement entropy below the transition, highlighting the relevance of the present model for studying the effect of decoherence on intra-particle entanglement in the context of quantum information processing.

Sub-Ohmic spin-boson model with off-diagonal coupling: Ground state properties

Zhiguo Lü, Liwei Duan, Xin Li +2 more

We have carried out analytical and numerical studies of the spin-boson model in the sub-ohmic regime with the influence of both the diagonal and the off-diagonal coupling accounted for, via the Davydov D1 variational ansatz. While a second-order phase transition is known to be exhibited by this model in the presence of diagonal coupling only, we demonstrate the emergence of a discontinuous first order phase transition upon incorporation of the off-diagonal coupling. A plot of the ground state energy versus magnetization highlights the discontinuous nature of the transition between the isotropic (zero magnetization) state and nematic (finite magnetization) phases. We have also calculated the entanglement entropy and a discontinuity found at a critical coupling strength further supports the discontinuous crossover in the spin-boson model in the presence of off-diagonal coupling. It is further revealed via a canonical transformation approach that for the special case of identical exponents for the spectral densities of the diagonal and the off-diagonal coupling, there exists a continuous crossover from a single localized phase to doubly degenerate localized phase with differing magnetizations.

Entanglement evolution and quantum phase transition of biased s=1/2 spin-boson model

Chunjian Zhao, Zhiguo Lü, Hang Zheng

The ground state and the spectral structure of lower-lying excited states of a dissipative two-level system coupled to a sub-Ohmic bath (s = 1/2) with nonzero bias have been studied using the unitary transformation method. By calculating the ground-state entanglement entropy, the ground-state average of σ(z)(G), and the static susceptibility of the two-level system, we explore the nature of the transition (crossover) between the delocalized and localized state of the two-level system. Furthermore, we calculate the time-dependent expectation (σ(z)(t)) and the time evolution of the entanglement entropy to show that, when the system undergoes a transition (crossover) from the delocalized to the localized state, the time evolution of the two-level system changes from coherent to decoherent dynamics.

Variational Approach to the Spin-boson Model With a Sub-Ohmic Bath

Wong, Hang, Zhide Chen

The influence of dissipation on quantum tunneling in the spin-boson model with a sub-Ohmic bath is studied by a variational calculation. By examining the evolution of solutions of the variational equation with the coupling strength near the phase boundary, we are able to present a scenario of discontinuous transition in sub-Ohmic dissipation case in accord with Ginzburg-Landau theory. Based on the constructed picture, it is shown that the critical point found in the general way is not thermodynamically the critical point, but the point where the second energy minimum begins to develop. The true cross-over point is calculated and the obtained phase diagram is in agreement with the result of numerical renormalization group calculation.

Generalized Polaron Ansatz for the Ground State of the Sub-Ohmic Spin-Boson Model: An Analytic Theory of the Localization Transition

Alex W. Chin, Javier Prior, Susana F. Huelga +1 more

The sub-Ohmic spin-boson model possesses a quantum phase transition at zero temperature between a localized and a delocalized phase, whose properties have so far only been extracted by numerical approaches. Here we present an extension of the Silbey-Harris variational polaron ansatz which allows us to develop an analytical theory which correctly describes a continuous transition with mean-field exponents for 0<s<0.5. The critical properties, couplings, and observables we obtain show excellent agreement with existing numerical results, and we give an intuitive microscopic description of the changing correlations between the system and bath which suppress the spin coherence and drive the transition.

Quantum phase transitions in the spin-boson model: Monte Carlo method versus variational approach à la Feynman

G. De Filippis, ANTONIO DE CANDIA, Loris Maria Cangemi +3 more

The effectiveness of the variational approach \`a la Feynman is proved in the spin-boson model, i.e., the simplest realization of the Caldeira-Leggett model able to reveal the quantum phase transition from delocalized to localized states and the quantum dissipation and decoherence effects induced by a heat bath. After exactly eliminating the bath degrees of freedom, we propose a trial, nonlocal in time, interaction between the spin and itself simulating the coupling of the two-level system with the bosonic bath. It stems from a Hamiltonian where the spin is linearly coupled to a finite number of harmonic oscillators whose frequencies and coupling strengths are variationally determined. We show that a very limited number of these fictitious modes is enough to get a remarkable agreement, up to very low temperatures, with the data obtained by using an approximation-free Monte Carlo approach, predicting (1) in the Ohmic regime, a Berezinski-Thouless-Kosterlitz quantum phase transition exhibiting the typical universal jump at the critical value; and (2) in the sub-Ohmic regime ($s\ensuremath{\le}0.5$), mean-field quantum phase transitions, with logarithmic corrections for $s=0.5$.

Generalized Spin-Boson model and its application to dissipative Bose-Josephson Junction

Sudip Sinha, Supervisor Dr. Subhasis Sinha

We investigate the effect of dissipation in a Bose Josephson junction (BJJ) coupled to bath of bosons at two sites as an application of the generalized spin-boson model. Apart from the dynamical transition due to repulsive interactions, the BJJ undergoes a quantum phase transition by increasing the coupling strength with the bath modes. We analyze this system by mapping to an equivalent spin model coupled to the bosonic modes. The excitation energies and fluctuation of number imbalance are obtained within Holstein-Primakoff approximation, which exhibits vanishing of energy gap and enhanced quantum fluctuations at the critical coupling. We study the dynamics of BJJ using time-dependent variational method and analyze stability of different types of steady states. As a special case, we study in details the phase space dynamics of BJJ coupled to a single-mode, which reveals diffusive and incoherent behaviour with increasing coupling to the bath mode. The dynamical steady states corresponding to the Pi-oscillation and self-trapped state become unstable in the region where their oscillation frequencies are in resonance with the bath modes. We investigate the time evolution of number imbalance and relative phase in presence of Ohmic bath with Gaussian noise to incorporate thermal fluctuations. Apart from the damping of Josephson oscillations and transition to symmetry broken state for strong coupling, we observe the decay of Pi-oscillation and self-trapped state to the ground state as a result of dissipation. Variation of phase fluctuation with temperature of the bath shows similar behaviour as observed in the experiments.
