Abstract

We study the dynamic response of magnetic domain walls in low-lying excited states of an Ising chain to an oscillating transverse field. Based on the exact instantaneous eigenstates, we find that when the frequency of the external field is in off-resonant regions, the domain wall exhibits Bloch oscillation, maintaining the magnetic order. However, the magnetic order is destroyed when the field is at resonant frequency. Numerical simulations of the dynamics of magnetization and entanglement entropy for initial states with single and double domain walls accord with the predictions. These findings reveal the nontrivial effect of a monochromatic electromagnetic field on quantum spin dynamics.

Magnetic Bloch oscillations in a non-Hermitian quantum Ising chain

K. L. Zhang, Z. Song

We investigate the impacts of an imaginary transverse field on the dynamics of magnetic domain walls in a quantum Ising chain. We show that an imaginary field plays a similar role as a real transverse field in forming a low-lying Wannier-Stark ladder. However, analytical and numerical calculations of the time evolutions in both systems show that the corresponding Bloch oscillations exhibit totally different patterns for the same initial states. These findings reveal the nontrivial effect of non-Hermiticity on quantum spin dynamics.

Semiclassical dynamics of domain walls in the one-dimensional Ising ferromagnet in a transverse field

Boris A. Ivanov, H.-J. Mikeska

We investigate analytically and numerically the dynamics of domain walls in a spin chain with ferromagnetic Ising interaction and subject to an external magnetic field perpendicular to the easy magnetization axis (transverse field Ising model). The analytical results obtained within the continuum approximation and numerical simulations performed for the discrete classical model are used to analyze the quantum properties of domain walls using the semiclassical approximation. We show that the domain wall spectrum shows a band structure consisting of $2S$ nonintersecting zones.

Domain wall dynamics of the Ising chain in a transverse field

V. Subrahmanyam

We show that the dynamics of an Ising spin chain in a transverse field conserves the number of domains (strings of down-spins in an up-spin background) at discrete times. This enables the determination of the eigenfunctions of the time-evolution operator, and the dynamics of initial states with domains. The transverse magnetization is shown to be identically zero in all sectors with a fixed number of domains. For an initial state with a single string of down-spins, the local magnetization, the equal time and double-time spin-spin correlation functions, are calculated analytically as functions of time and the initial string size. The domain size distribution function can be expressed as a simple integral involving Bessel functions.

Decoherence in the quantum Ising model with transverse dissipative interaction in the strong-coupling regime

Hannes Weisbrich, C. Saussol, Wolfgang Belzig +1 more

We study the decoherence dynamics of a quantum Ising lattice of finite size with a transverse dissipative interaction, namely, the coupling with the bath is assumed perpendicular to the direction of the spins interaction and parallel to the external magnetic field. In the limit of small transverse field, the eigenstates and spectrum are obtained by a strong-coupling expansion, from which we derive the Lindblad equation in the Markovian limit. At temperature lower than the energy gap and for weak dissipation, the decoherence dynamics can be restricted to take only the two degenerate ground states and the first excited subspace into account. The latter is formed by pairs of topological excitations (domain walls or kinks), which are quantum delocalized along the chain due to the small magnetic field. We find that some of these excited states form a relaxation-free subspace, namely, they do not decay to the ground states.

Universal front propagation in the quantum Ising chain with domain-wall initial states

Viktor Eisler, Florian Maislinger, Hans Gerd Evertz

We study the melting of domain walls in the ferromagnetic phase of the transverse Ising chain, created by flipping the order-parameter spins along one-half of the chain. If the initial state is excited by a local operator in terms of Jordan-Wigner fermions, the resulting longitudinal magnetization profiles have a universal character. Namely, after proper rescalings, the profiles in the noncritical Ising chain become identical to those obtained for a critical free-fermion chain starting from a step-like initial state. The relation holds exactly in the entire ferromagnetic phase of the Ising chain and can even be extended to the zero-field XY model by a duality argument. In contrast, for domain-wall excitations that are highly non-local in the fermionic variables, the universality of the magnetization profiles is lost. Nevertheless, for both cases we observe that the entanglement entropy asymptotically saturates at the ground-state value, suggesting a simple form of the steady state.

Dynamical phase transition in the transverse field Ising chain characterized by the transverse magnetization spectral function

G. Piccitto, Alessandro Silva

We study the response of a quantum Ising chain to transverse field oscillations in the asymptotic state attained after a quantum quench. We show that for quenches across a quantum phase transition, the dissipative part of the response at low frequencies is negative, corresponding to energy emission up to a critical frequency ${\ensuremath{\omega}}^{*}$. The latter is found to be connected to the time period ${t}^{*}$ of the singularities in the Loschmidt echo $({t}^{*}=2\ensuremath{\pi}/{\ensuremath{\omega}}^{*})$ signaling the presence of a dynamical quantum phase transition. This result suggests that a linear-response experiment can be used to detect this kind of phenomenon.
