Abstract

We apply the correlation matrix Hamiltonian reconstruction technique to the two-dimensional Gutzwiller-projected Fermi sea and π-flux states on finite-sized square and triangular lattices. Our results indicate no spin Hamiltonian with simple local interaction terms stabilizes such states for finite system sizes. We develop a quantitative assessment of the importance of local interactions to the stabilization of these liquid states. Lastly, we systematically assess arguments for the origin of local terms driving a Gutzwiller-projected ground state.

Design local spin models for Gutzwiller-projected parton wave functions

Jia‐Wei Mei, Xiao-Gang Wen

We introduce a method to design a local spin Hamiltonian to realize a Gutzwiller-projected parton wave functions (GPWF) as its ground state. For example, the Dirac spin liquid (DSL) state is quite close to the true ground state of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on kagome lattice. We examine what kind of perturbations we should add in order to drive the DSL to more stable chiral spin liquid (CSL), valence bond solid (VBS) or Gutzwiller-projected spin Hall (GSH) states. We compute the two-body reduced-density-matrices (2-RDM) of GPWFs for those target states, and compare them to the 2-RDM of the DSL. This allows us to design local spin models with only two-body interactions that may realize those interesting target states. Our results agree very well with recent numerical calculations for CSL on kagome lattice. We also study spin-1 systems on kagome lattice, and design local spin models that may realize CSL, VBS and symmetry-protected topological (SPT) states. Our work establishes a directional guide for further numerical simulations.

U(1)-symmetric Gaussian fermionic projected entangled paired states and their Gutzwiller projection

Jheng-Wei Li, Jan von Delft, Hong-Hao Tu

We develop a formalism for constructing particle-number-conserving Gaussian fermionic projected entangled pair states [U(1)-GfPEPSs] and show that these states can describe ground states of band insulators and gapless fermions with band touching points. When using them as variational Ans\"atze for two Dirac fermion systems (the $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux model on the square lattice and the $[0,\ensuremath{\pi}]$-flux model on the kagome lattice), we find that the U(1)-GfPEPSs, even with a relatively small bond dimension, can accurately approximate the Dirac Fermi sea ground states. By applying Gutzwiller projectors on top of these U(1)-GfPEPSs, we obtain a PEPS representation of U(1)-Dirac spin liquid states for spin-1/2 systems. With state-of-the-art tensor network numerics, the critical exponent in the spin-spin correlation function of the Gutzwiller-projected $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux state is estimated to be $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\approx}1.7$.

Parent Hamiltonian reconstruction of Jastrow-Gutzwiller wavefunctions

Xhek Turkeshi, Marcello Dalmonte

Variational wave functions have been a successful tool to investigate the properties of quantum spin liquids. Finding their parent Hamiltonians is of primary interest for the experimental realization of these strongly correlated phases, and for gathering additional insights on their stability. In this work, we systematically reconstruct approximate spin-chain parent Hamiltonians for Jastrow-Gutzwiller wave functions, which share several features with quantum spin liquid wave functions in two dimensions. Firstly, we determine the different phases encoded in the parameter space through their correlation functions and entanglement properties. Secondly, we apply a recently proposed entanglement-guided method to reconstruct parent Hamiltonians to these states, which constrains the search to operators describing relativistic low-energy field theories - as expected for deconfined phases of gauge theories relevant to quantum spin liquids. The quality of the results is discussed using different quantities and comparing to exactly known parent Hamiltonians at specific points in parameter space. Our findings provide guiding principles for experimental Hamiltonian engineering of this class of states.

Chirality and Quasi-Long-Range Order in Finite-Flux Gutzwiller States for Magnetized Frustrated Magnets

Wen O. Wang, Urban F. P. Seifert, Oleg A. Starykh +1 more

We study Gutzwiller-projected wave functions for triangular-lattice U(1) Dirac spin liquids in a Zeeman field, where we allow the U(1) gauge field to develop a gauge flux, resulting in (spin-split) spinon Landau levels. We find that at a given magnetization, the optimal candidate state has a finite flux chosen such that the spinon filling lies in a |C|=1 Landau-level gap: it gives the lowest variational energy and the smallest energy variance within our correlation-matrix reconstruction for local Heisenberg-type models. By symmetry, we argue that the finite gauge flux results in a nonzero (staggered) scalar spin chirality, as also numerically observed, and further find that the |C|=1 state exhibits dominant quasi-long-ranged 120° magnetic correlations. Studying the next-to-optimal wave function with a |C|=2 Landau-level gap, we observe unusual spin-nematic correlations. Our results may provide guidance for analyzing the magnetic-field response of Dirac spin liquid candidate materials and offer numerical diagnostics that can connect to the underlying theory of spinons coupled to an emergent U(1) gauge field.

Constructive fermionic matrix product states for projected Fermi sea

Kangle Li, Yanbai Zhang, Hoi Chun Po

Projected wave functions offer a means of incorporating local correlation effects in gapless electronic phases of matter, like metals. Although such wave functions can be readily specified formally, computing their associated physical observables is challenging. Tensor network approaches offer a modern numerical method for this task. In this paper, we develop and demonstrate a constructive tensor-network approach for obtaining physical quantities, like fermion two-point functions and density-density correlation functions, for one-dimensional projected Fermi sea states. We benchmark our method against exact analytical results for spin- 1 / 2 electrons subjected to the Gutzwiller projection, and then present results on spinless fermions with nearest-neighbor repulsion. For a state with two pairs of Fermi points, we reveal a correlation-dependent tuning of the characteristic wave vector of the charge density modulation in the system.

SU(N) quantum spin models: a variational wavefunction study

Arun Paramekanti, John Bradley Marston

SU ( N ) quantum spin systems may be realized in a variety of physical systems including ultracold atoms in optical lattices. The study of such models also leads to insights into possible novel quantum phases and phase transitions of SU (2) spin models. Here we use Gutzwiller projected fermionic variational wavefunctions to explore the phase diagram and correlation functions of SU ( N ) quantum spin models in the self-conjugate representation. In one dimension, the ground state of the SU (4) spin chain with Heisenberg bilinear and biquadratic interactions is studied by examining instabilities of the Gutzwiller projected free fermion ground state to various broken symmetries. The variational phase diagram so obtained agrees well with exact results. The spin–spin and dimer–dimer correlation functions of the Gutzwiller projected free fermion state with N flavours of fermions are in good agreement with exact and 1/ N calculations for the critical points of SU ( N ) spin chains. In two dimensions, the phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the square lattice is obtained by finding instabilities of the Gutzwiller projected π-flux state. In the absence of biquadratic interactions, the model exhibits long-range Néel order for N = 2 and 4, and spin Peierls (columnar dimer) order for N >4. Upon including biquadratic interactions in the SU (4) model (with a sign appropriate to a fermionic Hubbard model), the Néel order diminishes and eventually disappears, giving way to an extended valence bond crystal. In the case of the SU (6) model, the dimerized ground state melts at sufficiently large biquadratic interaction, yielding a projected π-flux spin liquid phase which in turn undergoes a transition into an extended valence bond crystal at even larger biquadratic interaction. The spin correlations of the projected π-flux state at N = 4 are in good agreement with 1/ N calculations. We find that the state shows strongly enhanced dimer correlations, in qualitative agreement with recent theoretical predictions. We also compare our results with a recent quantum Monte Carlo study of the SU (4) Heisenberg model.
