Abstract

We introduce transversal dimension jump, a code-switching protocol for lifted product (LP) quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) codes across different chain-complex dimensions, enabling universal fault-tolerant quantum computation with low overhead. The construction leverages the product structure of LP codes to implement one-way transversal CNOTs between a 3D code and its 2D component codes, enabling teleportation-based switching with geometrically nonlocal gates. Combined with constant-depth CCZ gates in 3D LP codes and low-overhead transversal Clifford gates in 2D LP codes, this yields universal, high-rate quantum logical computation with high thresholds and low space-time costs. Beyond asymptotic schemes, we identify explicit 3D-2D LP code pairs supporting cup-product CCZ gates, including bivariate tricycle-bicycle families such as the $[[81,3,5]]$-$[[54,2,6]]$ pair, where the 3D tricycle codes admit depth-2 CCZ, weight-6 stabilizers, and pseudo-thresholds $\gtrsim 0.4\%$. As a byproduct, we show that the 3D codes enable highly efficient magic-state preparation: a single round of stabilizer measurements followed by depth-2 CCZ and postselection produces states with error $<10^{-9}$ and success probability $\sim 35\%$. Our results establish a native integration of qLDPC codes with complementary transversal gates-covering nearly all practically relevant families known so far-and open a broad design space for scalable, low-overhead universal quantum computation.

Logical computation with canonical lifted product codes

Han Zheng, Guo Zheng, Liang Jiang +1 more

High-rate quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) codes encode many logical qubits with low physical-qubit overhead, but realizing efficient fault-tolerant computation on such dense encodings remains a major challenge. Generic, code-agnostic techniques such as code surgery and gate teleportation apply broadly, but are difficult to make modular, low-overhead, and fully certifiable on complex high-rate codes whose structure is left unexploited. Here we overcome these obstacles by co-designing the code together with its logical instruction set for a broad family of canonical lifted-product (LP) codes with cyclic symmetry. We show that these codes admit a canonical logical basis, in which conjugate logical operators are organized into rows and columns of cyclic orbits inherited directly from the underlying classical codes, analogous to the structure that makes hypergraph-product codes so tractable. This canonical basis enables universal logical processing using magic-state input and a constant number of reusable seed surgery gadgets---only two (resp. four) for a $[[1122,148,\leq 20]]$ (resp. $[[4350,1224,\leq 20]]$) LP code. A fixed extractor smaller than half the data block also enables arbitrarily high-weight logical Pauli-product measurements (PPMs) while preserving the code's cyclic symmetry. These codes also enable rigorously fault-tolerant parallel logic, including PPMs across all logical qubits and magic-state injection from many surface codes into a full LP block. For example, a $[[468,36,20]]$ (resp. $[[952,112,17]]$) code supports simultaneous measurements of arbitrary logically disjoint Pauli products with an ancilla overhead of roughly three (resp. four) times the data block size. These results advance the frontier of fault-tolerant quantum computation on ultra-high-rate quantum architectures.

Single-Shot Universality in Quantum LDPC Codes via Code-Switching

Shi Jie Samuel Tan, Yifan Hong, Ting-Chun Lin +2 more

Code-switching is a powerful technique in quantum error correction that allows one to leverage the complementary strengths of different codes to achieve fault-tolerant universal quantum computation. However, existing code-switching protocols that encapsulate recent generalized lattice surgery approaches often either require many rounds of measurements to ensure fault-tolerance or suffer from low code rates. We present a single-shot, universal protocol that uses code-switching between high-rate quantum codes to perform fault-tolerant quantum computation. To our best knowledge, our work contains the first universal fault-tolerant quantum computation protocol that achieves what we term single-shot universality on high-rate codes that is characterized by (i) single-shot error correction, (ii) single-shot state preparation, as well as (iii) universal logical gates and logical measurements with constant depth circuits. We achieve this feat with single-shot code-switching between constant-rate 2D hypergraph product (HGP) codes and high-rate 3D HGP codes that can be viewed as a generalization of Bombin's dimensional jump for color codes and Hillmann et al.'s single-shot lattice surgery for higher-dimensional topological codes. In addition, we prove the fault-tolerance of our code-switching protocol under both the adversarial and local-stochastic noise models. We introduce a vastly simpler recipe to construct high-rate 3D HGP codes with transversal CCZ gates that grants immense flexibility in the choice of expander graphs and local codes, allowing us to expand the search space for codes with good parameters and interesting logical gates. Our work opens an alternative path towards universal fault-tolerant quantum computation with low space-time overhead by circumventing the need for magic state distillation.

Single-shot magic state factories for quantum LDPC codes

Varun Menon, Rohan Mehta, Andi Gu +8 more

Quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) codes can substantially reduce the qubit overhead of fault-tolerant quantum computation, but any useful architecture based on such codes also requires an efficient mechanism to implement non-Clifford gates in a fault-tolerant manner. We introduce a space-time-efficient magic state factory for high-rate qLDPC codes by combining the transversal non-Clifford gates of recently developed tricycle codes with single-shot four-dimensional balanced product quadcycle codes. The key ingredient is an efficient "escape" mechanism that teleports postselected logical magic states from tricycle codes to larger distance quadcycle codes. Under a standard circuit-level noise model at physical error rate $10^{-3}$, our factories produce $\mathrm{CCZ}$ states at logical error rates as low as $10^{-9}$ with 10-40 times lower space-time cost than state-of-the-art magic state generation methods. The resulting states are directly encoded in high-rate blocks suitable for computation. We identify the quadcycle codes by an AI-assisted search and show that they can serve as excellent memories capable of single-shot error correction. Finally, we present a concrete implementation of the entire factory with highly efficient atom transport on reconfigurable neutral-atom quantum computers. Together, these results provide an end-to-end, practical protocol for producing and utilizing high-fidelity magic states within a high-rate qLDPC architecture, with the lowest space-time cost to date.

Non-Abelian qLDPC: TQFT Formalism, Addressable Gauging Measurement and Application to Magic State Fountain on 2D Product Codes

Guanyu Zhu, Ryohei Kobayashi, Po-Shen Hsin

A fundamental problem of fault-tolerant quantum computation with quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) codes is the tradeoff between connectivity and universality. It is widely believed that in order to perform native logical non-Clifford gates, one needs to resort to 3D product-code constructions. In this work, we extend Kitaev's framework of non-Abelian topological codes on manifolds to non-Abelian qLDPC codes (realized as Clifford-stabilizer codes) and the corresponding combinatorial topological quantum field theories (TQFT) defined on Poincaré CW complexes and certain types of general chain complexes. We also construct the spacetime path integrals as topological invariants on these complexes. Remarkably, we show that native non-Clifford logical gates can be realized using constant-rate 2D hypergraph-product codes and their Clifford-stabilizer variants. This is achieved by a spacetime path integral effectively implementing the addressable gauging measurement of a new type of 0-form subcomplex symmetries, which correspond to addressable transversal Clifford gates and become higher-form symmetries when lifted to higher-dimensional CW complexes or manifolds. Building on this structure, we apply the gauging protocol to the magic state fountain scheme for parallel preparation of $O(\sqrt{n})$ disjoint CZ magic states with code distance of $O(\sqrt{n})$, using a total number of $n$ qubits.

Magic Tricycles: Efficient Magic-State Generation with Finite Block-Length Quantum LDPC Codes

Varun Menon, J. Pablo Bonilla Ataides, Rohan Mehta +3 more

The preparation of high-fidelity non-Clifford (magic) states is an essential subroutine for universal quantum computation but imposes substantial space-time overhead. Magic-state factories based on high-rate and -distance quantum low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes equipped with transversal non-Clifford gates can potentially reduce these overheads significantly, by circumventing the need for multiple rounds of distillation and by producing a large number of magic states in a single code block. As a step toward realizing efficient, fault-tolerant magic-state production, we introduce a class of finite block-length quantum LDPC codes which we name tricycle codes, generalizing the well-known bicycle codes to three homological dimensions. These codes can support constant-depth physical circuits that implement logical C C Z gates between three code blocks. To construct these constant-depth C C Z circuits, we develop analytical and numerical techniques that apply to a broad class of three-dimensional homological and balanced-product codes. We further show that tricycle codes enable single-shot state preparation and error correction, leading to a highly efficient magic-state generation protocol. Numerical simulations of specific codes confirm robust performance under circuit-level noise, demonstrating a high circuit-noise threshold of > 0.5 % . With modest postselection, certain tricycle codes of block lengths of only approximately 50–100 qubits are shown to produce | C C Z ¯ ⟩ magic states with logical error rates ranging from 2 × 10 − 8 to below 3 × 10 − 11 . Finally, we construct optimal depth syndrome extraction circuits for tricycle codes and present a protocol for implementing them efficiently on a reconfigurable neutral-atom platform.

Logical Operators and Fold-Transversal Gates of Bivariate Bicycle Codes

Jens Niklas Eberhardt, Vincent Steffan

Quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) codes offer a promising route to scalable fault-tolerant quantum computation with constant overhead. Recent advancements have shown that qLDPC codes can outperform the quantum memory capability of surface codes even with near-term hardware. The question of how to implement logical gates fault-tolerantly for these codes is still open. We present new examples of high-rate bivariate bicycle (BB) codes with enhanced symmetry properties. These codes feature explicit nice bases of logical operators (similar to toric codes) and support fold-transversal Clifford gates. As examples, we construct$[[{98,6,12}]]$and$[[{162, 8, 12}]]$BB codes which admit interesting fault-tolerant Clifford gates. Our work also lays the mathematical foundations for explicit bases of logical operators and fold-transversal gates in quantum two-block group algebra codes, which might be of independent interest.
