Abstract

In this paper, we study the ergodic theorem for infinite-dimensional quantum Markov semigroups, originally introduced by Frigerio and Verri in 1982, and its latest version developed by Carbone and Girotti in 2021. We provide a sufficient condition that ensures exponential convergence towards the positive recurrent subspace, a well-known result for irreducible quantum Markov semigroups in finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Several illustrative examples are presented to demonstrate the application of the ergodic theorem. Moreover, we show that the positive recurrent subspace plays a crucial role in the study of global asymptotic stability.

Iterates of quantum operations

József Zsolt Bernád

Iterates of quantum operations and their convergence are investigated in the context of mean ergodic theory. We discuss in detail the convergence of the iterates and show that the uniform ergodic theorem plays an essential role. Our results will follow from some general theorems concerning completely positive maps, mean ergodic operators, and operator algebras on Hilbert spaces. A few examples of both finite and infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces are presented as well.

Irreducibility of Quantum Markov Semigroups, uniqueness of invariant states and related properties

Franco Fagnola, Federico Girotti

We present different characterizations of the notion of irreducibility for Quantum Markov Semigroups (QMSs) and investigate its relationship with other relevant features of the dynamics, such as primitivity, positivity improvement and relaxation; in particular, we show that irreducibility, primitivity and relaxation towards a faithful invariant density are equivalent when the semigroup admits an invariant density. Moreover, in the case of uniformly continuous QMSs, we present several useful ways of checking irreducibility in terms of the operators appearing in the generator in GKLS form. Our exposition is as much self-contained as possible, we present some well known results with elementary proofs (collecting all the relevant literature) and we derive new ones. We study both finite and infinite dimensional evolutions and we remark that many results only require the QMS to be made of Schwarz maps.

On irreducibility and positivity improvement of norm continuous quantum Markov semigroups

Skander Hachicha, Ikbel Nasraoui

We show that for a norm continuous quantum Markov semigroup irreducibility and positivity improvement for any time [Formula: see text] are equivalent under some general conditions that hold, in particular, in the finite-dimensional case. This result is applied to quantum Markov semigroups of weak coupling limit type. We also discuss the discrete-time case.

On the asymptotic behavior of generic quantum Markov semigroups

Raffaella Carbone, Emanuela Sasso, Veronica Umanità

We study ergodicity and decoherence for generic quantum Markov semigroups: in particular, we highlight the strong relationships among these properties, the convergence in law of the classical Markov process associated with the diagonal part of the semigroup, and the structure of its communication classes.

Decompositions of Hilbert spaces, stability analysis and convergence probabilities for discrete-time quantum dynamical semigroups

Giuseppe Ilario Cirillo, Francesco Ticozzi

We investigate convergence properties of discrete-time semigroup quantum dynamics, including asymptotic stability, probability and speed of convergence to pure states and subspaces. These properties are of interest in both the analysis of uncontrolled evolutions and the engineering of controlled dynamics for quantum information processing. Our results include two Hilbert space decompositions that allow for deciding the stability of the subspace of interest and for estimating of the speed of convergence, as well as a formula to obtain the limit probability distribution for a set of orthogonal invariant subspaces.
