Abstract

Quantum entanglement and quantum magic are two distinct fundamental resources that enable quantum systems to exhibit complex phenomena beyond the capabilities of classical computer simulations. While quantum entanglement has been extensively used to characterize both equilibrium and dynamical phases, the study of quantum magic, typically quantified by the stabilizer Rényi entropy (SRE), remains largely limited to numerical simulations of moderate system sizes. In this Letter, we establish a general framework for analyzing the SRE in solvable Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models in the large-N limit, which enables the application of the saddle-point approximation. Applying this method to the Maldacena-Qi coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, we identify a series of first-order transitions of the SRE as the temperature is tuned. In particular, we uncover an intrinsic transition of the SRE that cannot be detected through thermodynamic quantities. We also discuss the theoretical understanding of the SRE in both the high-temperature and low-temperature limits. Our results pave the way for studying the SRE in strongly correlated fermionic systems in the thermodynamic limit and suggest a new class of transitions for which the SRE serves as an order parameter.

Entanglement entropy and its quench dynamics for pure states of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Pengfei Zhang

Abstract Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) is a concrete solvable model with non-Fermi liquid behavior and maximal chaos. In this work, we study the entanglement Rényi entropy for the subsystems of the SYK model in the Kourkoulou-Maldacena states. We use the path-integral approach and take the saddle point approximation in the large-N limit. We find a first-order transition exist when tuning the subsystem size for the q = 4 case, while it is absent for the q = 2 case. We further study the entanglement dynamics for such states under the real-time evolution for noninteracting, weakly interacting and strongly interacting SYK(-like) models.

Exact solution of long-range stabilizer Rényi entropy in the dual-unitary XXZ model*

Jordi A. Montana-Lopez, Pavel Kos

Abstract Quantum systems can not be efficiently simulated classically due to the presence of entanglement and nonstabilizerness, also known as quantum magic. Here we study the generation of magic under evolution by a quantum circuit. To be able to provide exact solutions, we focus on the dual-unitary XXZ model and a measure of magic called stabilizer Rényi entropy (SRE). Moreover, we focus also on long-range SRE, which cannot be removed by short-depth quantum circuits. To obtain exact solutions we use a ZX-calculus representation and graphical rules for the evaluation of the required expressions. We obtain exact results for SRE after short-time evolution in the thermodynamic limit and for long-range SRE for all times and all Rényi parameters for a particular partition of the state. Since the numerical evaluation of these quantities is exponentially costly in the Rényi parameter, we verify this numerically for low Rényi parameters and accessible system sizes and provide numerical results for the long-range SRE in other partitions.

Multipartite Non-local Magic and SYK Model

Vinay Malvimat, Matthieu Sarkis, Yena Suk +1 more

We investigate the structure of quantum magic in interacting disordered fermionic systems, quantifying non-stabilizerness via the fermionic stabilizer Rényi entropy (SRE). To resolve the distribution of magic across different scales, we introduce a multipartite non-local magic functional, constructed from an inclusion-exclusion combination of subsystem contributions. This measure serves as a fine-grained diagnostic, isolating genuinely global contributions and revealing nontrivial interactions between local and collective supports of magic. We illustrate the measure on paradigmatic multipartite states and apply these diagnostics to the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and its variants. Crucially, for thermal/typical ensembles, we observe a marked disparity between Thermal Pure Quantum (TPQ) states and the thermal density matrix. This reveals a concealed complexity: the immense computational hardness characterizing the unitary evolution is encoded in the specific microstructure of the black hole microstates, while being washed out in the coarse-grained thermodynamic description. Furthermore, in $\mathcal N=2$ supersymmetric SYK, we show that while fortuitous BPS states exhibit intermediate stabilizer complexity, the multipartite measure unveils a rich, sector-dependent pattern of global correlations, distinguishing them from generic chaotic states.

Magic of Kitaev spin liquids

Eleonora Lamma, Tim Bauer, Marcello Dalmonte +1 more

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are long-range entangled phases of matter and a natural setting for exploring how quantum correlations generate quantum complexity. Motivated by the emergence of magic, or nonstabilizerness, as a diagnostic of many-body complexity beyond entanglement, we study magic of QSLs by computing the stabilizer Rényi entropy (SRE) of the Kitaev honeycomb model. We derive a correspondence between Pauli strings and products of itinerant Majorana operators in the model's free-fermion description; this enables the sampling of SRE using an optimized algorithm for Gaussian states in systems with thousands of spins. Our results show that magic is largest in the gapless phase, where subleading volume-law corrections indicate nonlocal contributions, while in the gapped phases, SRE decreases in quantitative agreement with a perturbative expansion that we develop in the anisotropic limit. At the topological phase transition, SRE exhibits universal scaling dictated by critical exponents.

Stabilizer entropy and entanglement complexity in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Barbara Jasser, Jovan Odavić, Alioscia Hamma

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is of paramount importance for the understanding of both strange metals and a microscopic theory of two-dimensional gravity. We study the interplay between stabilizer R\'enyi entropy and entanglement entropy in both the ground state and highly excited states of the $\mathrm{SYK}\ensuremath{-}4+\mathrm{SYK}\ensuremath{-}2$ model, interpolating the highly chaotic four-body interactions model with the integrable two-body interactions one. The interplay between these quantities is also assessed through universal statistics of the entanglement spectrum and its antiflatness. We find that SYK-4 is indeed characterized by a complex pattern of both entanglement and nonstabilizer resources, while SYK-2 is nonuniversal and not complex. We discuss the fragility and robustness of these features depending on the interpolation parameter.

Characterizing Fermionic Non-Gaussianity in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model via Replica Twist Entropy

Ning Sun, Pengfei Zhang

Understanding the non-equilibrium dynamics of quantum many-body systems plays a central role in modern many-body physics. Intriguing insights emerge from investigating how quantum resources, which are essential for achieving unambiguous quantumness, are generated and spread under chaotic quantum dynamics. In fermionic systems, non-Gaussianity constitutes an important resource beyond entanglement, characterizing the deviation of generic quantum states from free-fermion states. In this Letter, we propose using the \textit{replica twist entropy}, defined through the expectation value of a replica rotation operator with a tunable angle $α$, as a natural probe of non-Gaussianity in pure fermionic states. After deriving its behavior for typical many-body states, we establish a general framework for analyzing the replica twist entropy in solvable Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models in the large-$N$ limit. Applying this framework to the dynamics of the thermofield double state, we uncover a novel dynamical phase diagram in the parameter space of $α$ and evolution time $t$, exhibiting spontaneous $Z_2$ symmetry breaking at $α=π/4$ and universal cusps as a function of $α$ in the long-time regime. Our results pave the way for studying non-Gaussianity in strongly correlated fermionic systems and reveal a new class of dynamical transitions probed by non-Gaussianity.
