Entanglement Suppression in Quantum Field Theories: Holography, Chaos, and Mixed-State Dynamics

Abstract

Recent work has revealed that entanglement entropy growth in conformal field theories (CFTs) can be suppressed when a local operator quench interacts with a mixed-state excitation, providing a dual interpretation in terms of black hole scattering in AdS. This phenomenon, termed \emph{entanglement suppression}, opens several promising directions for exploration. In this proposal, I outline five distinct yet interconnected research trajectories: generalization to higher dimensions, the role of quantum chaos via out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs), the absence of suppression in integrable models, the extension to entanglement negativity as a probe of mixedness, and a geometric interpretation based on scattering cross sections in AdS. Each direction offers new insights into the interplay between holography, non-equilibrium dynamics, and quantum information.

Entanglement suppression due to black hole scattering

Kazuki Doi, Tadashi Takayanagi

A bstract We consider the evolution of entanglement entropy in a two-dimensional conformal field theory with a holographic dual. Specifically, we are interested in a class of excited states produced by a combination of pure-state (local operator) and mixed-state local quenches. We employ a method that allows us to determine the full time evolution analytically. While a single insertion of a local operator gives rise to a logarithmic time profile of entanglement entropy relative to the vacuum, we find that this growth is heavily suppressed in the presence of a mixed-state quench, reducing it to a time-independent constant bump. The degree of suppression depends on the relative position of the quenches as well as the ratio of regularization parameters associated with the quenches. This work sheds light on the interesting properties of gravitational scattering involving black holes.

Correlation measures and the entanglement wedge cross-section after quantum quenches in two-dimensional conformal field theories

Jonah Kudler-Flam, Yuya Kusuki, Shinsei Ryu

Abstract We consider the time evolution of mixed state correlation measures in two-dimensional conformal field theories, such as logarithmic negativity, odd entropy, and reflected entropy, after quantum quenches of various kinds. These correlation measures, in the holographic context, are all associated to the entanglement wedge cross section. We contrast various classes of conformal field theories, both rational and irrational (pure) conformal field theories. First, for rational conformal field theories, whose dynamics can be well described by the quasi-particle picture, we find all four quantities for disjoint intervals to be proportional, regardless of the specific quench protocol. Second, using the light cone boot- strap, we generalize our results to irrational conformal field theories where we find sharp distinctions from the quasi-particle results and striking differences between mutual information and the other measures. The large surplus of logarithmic negativity relative to mutual information forces us to reconsider what mutual information and logarithmic negativity really measure. We interpret these results as a signature of information scrambling and chaos in irrational theories. These CFT results perfectly agree with our gravitational (holographic) calculations. Furthermore, using holography, we are able to generalize the results to outside of the light cone limit. Finally, due to the breakdown of the quasi-particle picture for irrational theories, we appeal to the “line-tension picture,” motivated by random unitary circuits, as a phenomenological description. We observe that random unitary circuits, with local Hilbert space dimension determined by the Cardy formula, have precisely the same entanglement dynamics as irrational (including holographic) conformal field theories.

On entanglement dynamics in holographic theories

Hanzhi Jiang

Entanglement entropy (EE) is a concept of paramount importance in modern theoretical physics. Nevertheless, calculating EE in generic interacting theories with non-trivial time dependence is notoriously difficult. In this thesis, we address the real-time dynamics of EE in certain strongly-coupled quantum field theories (QFT) using the Anti-de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence. We first study the time evolution of EE in an exactly solvable model of two-dimensional CFT with an inhomogeneous sine-square deformation (SSD). We argue that the non-trivial time evolutions driven by the SSD Hamiltonian can be regarded as changing the foliations of spacetime. Remarkably, this leads to the presence of new horizons in the dual three-dimensional bulk. We then compute the EE in SSD CFT using holography and found agreement with CFT results in all comparable cases. Afterwards, we proceed to entanglement dynamics in generic chaotic quantum many-body systems. In the limit of large subsystems and late times, entanglement dynamics is believed to be described by an entanglement membrane effective theory. For 2d CFTs, a degenerate tension function reproduces several results regarding the dynamics of the entropy; this stands in contrast to higher dimensions where the tension is non-degenerate. We use holography to show that, in order to correctly capture the reflected entropy in 2d CFT, one needs to add an additional degree of freedom to the membrane description. Furthermore, we show that the conventional non-degenerate membrane tension function emerges upon introducing a relevant deformation to the CFT, dual to a planar Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole with scalar hair and with an interior Kasner universe. Subsequently, we establish a membrane effective theory for the dynamics of reflected entropy in higher dimensions. Lastly, we apply the membrane theories for reflected entropy to study the time evolution of multiparty entanglement signals. We found that scrambling dynamics generate multiparty entanglement with rich structures.

Entanglement negativity, holography and black holes

Pankaj Chaturvedi, Vinay Malvimat, Gautam Sengupta

We investigate the application of our recent holographic entanglement negativity conjecture for higher dimensional conformal field theories to specific examples which serve as crucial consistency checks. In this context we compute the holographic entanglement negativity for bipartite pure and finite temperature mixed state configurations in d-dimensional conformal field theories dual to bulk pure $$AdS_{d+1}$$ geometry and $$AdS_{d+1}$$ -Schwarzschild black holes respectively. It is observed that the holographic entanglement negativity characterizes the distillable entanglement for the finite temperature mixed states through the elimination of the thermal contributions. Significantly our examples correctly reproduce universal features of the entanglement negativity for corresponding two dimensional conformal field theories, in higher dimensions.

Dynamics of entanglement wedge cross section from conformal field theories

Yuya Kusuki, Kotaro Tamaoka

We derive dynamics of the entanglement wedge cross section directly from the two-dimensional holographic CFTs with a local operator quench. This derivation is based on the reflected entropy, a correlation measure for mixed states. We further compare these results with the mutual information and ones for integrable systems. This comparison directly suggests the classical correlation plays an important role in chaotic systems, unlike integrable ones. Besides a local operator quench, we study the reflected entropy in heavy primary states and find a breaking of the subsystem ETH. We checked the above results also hold for the odd entanglement entropy, which is another measure for mixed states related to the entanglement wedge cross section.

Time evolution of entanglement negativity from black hole interiors

Vinay Malvimat, Sayid Mondal, Gautam Sengupta

Abstract We investigate the time evolution of entanglement negativity following a global quench for mixed state configurations of two disjoint and adjacent intervals in a (1 + 1)-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT 1+1) dual to the eternal black hole sliced in half by an end of the world brane, through the AdS 3 /CFT 2 correspondence. To this end we obtain the time evolution of the holographic entanglement negativity for such mixed states from a dual bulk eternal black hole geometry and elucidate the relevant geodesic structures. The holographic entanglement negativity for such mixed states, following a global quench is described by half of the results for the eternal black hole. Significantly our results exactly match with the corresponding CFT 1+1 computations.
